My main inspiration

Hey all,

this is my first ever entry into the CG Challenge, I really excited about this one and I am aiming to complete a rather ambitious Animated storyline (Details to follow) Basically its going to be taking strong design influence for the Alien characters from both "Invasion of the Saucer Men" and from "Mars Attack", Although I understand the theme is "B-Movie" What I hope to achieve is a high production value short with lots of character animation which isn't 'corney' looking but will actually be fun to watch and analyze from a character animation perspective. However I intend to explore the "golden age" humor and phares such as Gee Whiz Son, Thats swell and have a running theme of the same character playing various roles in the short but with different clothes props to define the characters.

I'm also looking into the "Grindhouse" style of over the top violence to accompany my hero character as he fights off the invaders from Mars in an effort to sercure safety for the cliche blonde!

Aswell as this, I intend to slip some nice "hollywood" cliche moments and maybe referneces from other famous B-Movies. A slap stick soundtrack and that golden posh voice-over man.

Overall once done I hope the short will look authentic and low budget whilst still being enjoyable to watch.

So yeah got very excited tonight and started doing some really quick sketches down on paper,
I'll got some basic designs on paper for my "Hero" and the "Alien" characters (Which I want to pay homage to the "Invasion of the Saucer Men" and "Mars Attack") so it is a combination of both which I'll continue to develop into my own style.

There also a quick sketch of a scene I want to include with a car, and a basic sheet of 6 storyboard shots, which show the opening.

The short opens on a 40's american car at a drive in, looking at the screen, girl and boy in the car, cut to shot of each of them munching popcorn and grinning in a cheesey way, look back to the theatre screen, Alien Saucer bursts through, girl and boy engage in over the top dramtic embrace and screams.

I'm kinda hoping I can incorporate both good animation whilst making the acting look over the top and actually like B-movie bad acting. The story continues but at this stage I really want to nail down the storyboards and shot design before leaking the whole short story.

Oh I forgot to mention, I intend on this being a fully CG cartoon style "B-Movie" so theres no live action.

Feedback welcome.

Progress with Car model 4 hours so far, not the best modeller but this is always going to be moving pretty fast so shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Got quite a lot done in a short amount of time, speed modelling for the win. Anyways, just the jaw, tongue and teeth and then I'm gonna give zbrush a go!

01 January 2010, 12:58 PM (

Another hour of work this morning, just working on teeth and tongue and a better shape for the brain. Then zbrush the details in.

01 January 2010, 02:11 PM (

Basic Model_Done, either bump map on details or maybe zbrush some work into it.

I like your alien and can't wait to see the ZBrush details.:)

A couple more hours to the car, just some minor modelling and rigging to go on this.

Thanks, I've only used zbrush once properly so this will be a good character to work some nice features onto.

A quick 2 hours modelling and assigning shaders, just some slight tweaks and then on z-brush details and texturing. :)

I haven't decided on the design for the eyes yet, I may go like the pones featured, or like Mars attacks (buldging veiny human eyes, or maybe even large eye completely black, This is one of the last details I will work out though. Lots to do!!

Some more details and different eyes.

Latest Update: Work In Progress: Model Dev (

So no updates in a while! I've changed my story and the concept of the film now and have aqccuired a team mate to help make the short film. Updates should start coming thick and fast now. My team mate is a friend from work called Craig Moroney and he will be responsible for Modelling,Lighting & Effects, and probably a 50% split of rendering and comping'

Please do let me know what you think of the barn, about 6 hours work put into this so far, hopefully a few more tonight.

The barn looks very good... real cozy. You might want to smoothing on the model, though, unless you're not doing any close-ups.

Also I love the aliens you made... Looking forward to seeing the Zbrush version.
