I just wanted to point out that my last comment is not about like or dislike. I actually do like your idea and am enjoying it as a caricature very much the same way I enjoy the caricatures of WW1&2 times depicting world issues with cartoon characters. My point is story and story alone and currently the image just does not take my mind any further than initial amusement and agreement with your message, since I don't see a typical B-movie story behind it. Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing where you'll take it eventually. :)

Enjoy your weekend off!

02-12-2010, 12:19 PM
Simply amazing,Can't wait to see the final image!

02-12-2010, 02:09 PM
This is looking fantastic. I'm not sure why you don't like the last bonobo render. I'm curious to actually know why. Enjoy the weekend :)

02-12-2010, 05:48 PM
thank you sir!

it's a wip and as I mentioned before, other elements will be added to help the story. A quick look at my portfolio will show you that I add a good amount of thought to a lot of my work. Wait and let the idea develop. I can guarantee you that the final image will not even need texts to be understandable. Thanks for your honest input and your concerns

thanks, me too!

the thing is, some people like developing their images till they get something cool to show and then you see a few images posted during the challenge and they all look good. Silly people like me will post a lot of images during the process, on-the-fly, meaning that I post stuff as soon as I work on it. At the end you will find some cool images in the mix but a lot of not so great stuff that is there just to show the progress.
This last image is just to show I'm working on the ape texturing/model/lighting, but it relies heavily on post color correction, that I would rather have improved on the 3D render instead, so I can have less post work with very little effort, by spending a little time to fix the color maps. Also, the anatomy/shape of his mouth is weird. Eyes are working, nose kind does too but mouth alone is off. But as I said, it's a bunch of wip images that don't make me 100% happy, but they are all walking towards a common objective: to have a cool final image to show, hopefully

02-12-2010, 06:16 PM
1st of all congrats on the wip, i`ve seen some really jaw dropping stuff man!

The girl is amazing, what else can i say!, The ape is also coming along really well, awesome detail.

As far as the story subject, its nice to just open the box in the end! Surprise! keep up the good work!

That's a good way to put it! Thanks man

02-12-2010, 07:05 PM
The chimp is looking great. Can't wait to see all the elements together.

02-13-2010, 01:01 AM
looking great man.. The details are really coming out for sure.. Oh and 6k for texture size it is awesome that you can work that big.. my PC would have some problems handling such huge maps man.. but great work as always.. looking forward to the finished picture!

02-13-2010, 10:56 AM
Thanks for the reply. I think its great you show the entire process.. The more pics the better I say. It gives us lesser beings a chance to learn stuff. I look forward too seeing the bonobo updates.

02-13-2010, 06:07 PM
I'm still lovein that chopped up look!!

Have a good weekend Kris, the Bonobo and everyone here too

- Ty

02-13-2010, 06:36 PM
Keep the awesome work up, this is really inspirational work you have here sir!

02-15-2010, 05:16 AM
Virtuoso at work.
I was considering entering, but I think I'm too intimidated (and too busy for that matter).
Keep it up!

02-15-2010, 08:09 AM
impressive stuff!

Started the last character: a baby bonobo holding his piggy bank. Still need to finish posing his hands and fix anatomy stuff. Texture is in progress and so it's the lighting.

obrigado "conterrâneo" :)

Korendo, FranciscoAlvarezDelgado, Fahran, molossus,

I agree. Thanks man!

you know what? I'm kinda thinking about turning the pin-up into a "real doll". If she is an android, maybe the whole thing will look a little less creepy ;)

nah man, your work is awesome and your renders always kicked my ass anyway :)

02-16-2010, 03:15 PM
He's back - RUN!

Seriously though, the baby bonobo looks absolutely adorable. Love it.

02-16-2010, 03:36 PM
Look better and better.I like his eyes.Great stuff.

02-16-2010, 05:42 PM
Hi Kris baby bonobo looks lovely I think you captured the spirit of the infant just right with that expression well done! How are you rendering the detail maps are you using displacements from zbrush or normal maps? Also I would love to see how you get the wrinkles so superb are you using projection master or alphas for those. Looking so sweet so far can't wait for you to finish this one off I'm the end result is gunna be gobsmacking.

02-16-2010, 10:54 PM
That baby is cute, very sad about the tax-man.

02-16-2010, 11:58 PM
man, I'm freaking out now actually! I mean, I took a couple of days off thinking that I had a month and a week left but in fact we have only 27 days left!! o_O
I'll try my best. Thanks!

thanks! Although I think a little more color will help his eyes to stand out more, like the little fellah in my avatar.

thank you. I'm planning to have a little mini-tuto about wrinkles modeling but I'm still struggling with free time to do anything in life :)
At this point I'm rendering those guys using a relatively low poly mesh (around 60k polys) and plain normal maps. I'll try to keep this way, since it's really fast to render and is giving me a good amount of detail. But I'm also considering some decimation in ZBrush, so I can use the mesh only, without normal maps. I'm avoiding displacement maps all together at this point.

thanks

02-17-2010, 12:30 AM
HI Kris

Long time I follow your work and is very f**ing impressive and also i'm learning a lot with your threads and tutorials, so please keep posting hahahaha

Good luck in this contest

Best regards

02-17-2010, 12:58 AM
I just did my taxes this weekend on valentine's day and now feel strangely linked to bonobo jones, like i know exactly what he is going through...Love how its coming along as well. Hope you get refreshed after 4 days off..

02-17-2010, 05:06 AM
Oh wow, that little guy is cute. His eyes are very deep, I like that, adds more character.

For only using 60k polys the renders are showing a lot of detail. The wrinkles hold up very well. Nothing else to say but keep it up.

02-17-2010, 12:40 PM
Excellent Job Kris !
I really like the eyes : so perfect !!
The posing and the mood are really matching the situation and the character !
Great job :)

02-17-2010, 02:34 PM
Cute character ! What would he save money for ?
Your update reminds me this article i read : http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/monkeywire/2005-June/000767.html

02-17-2010, 02:55 PM
Uh ! Pretty baby ! ( With the voice of and old senile granny...)

Another cool character Kris !

Here's a new quick'n'dirty paintover showing some new ideas based on Frazetta's universe combined with some elements from Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon.

Not sure about the monster wearing glasses because it makes a little too literal but I added them to think about it. They will all be standing on this foreground cliff, with a big crater and some weird formed rocks that are in fact some kind of civilization on the background. Similar formations next to them as well, adding more movement to the composition. Inspired by Frazetta, I'll add some psychadelic mushrooms, maybe to help this mess to make sense :D

As you can see, now the pin-up was turned into a "real doll", who is also being used as a "tree" by the bonobo.

All outfits will receive a very cheesy treatment and not even her joints will be real joints, but cheap pieces of plastic tubes covering her articulations. Not sure about his hat but I'll think about something.

Well, very much everything is wip but I like this direction and gives me a more exact idea of the size of the trouble I'll have ahead...

02-18-2010, 06:22 AM
Huh, so now she's a fembot. That'll work.
In the current composition the IRS agent really looks good. Well, it's all WIP so I'll wait to see how it all develops.

02-18-2010, 09:19 AM
Wow ! upon seeing your name here as a entrant is like being whipped back to those gool ol' days when you are dominating these challenges. Add Mandrake/Blackarts and this challenge will be superstar studded. But I don't want to summon him he he. You know what he can whip out. Anyway nice progress in the composition department. Good luck and push push .

02-18-2010, 10:41 AM
man, I'm freaking out now actually! I mean, I took a couple of days off thinking that I had a month and a week left but in fact we have only 27 days left!! o_O
I'll try my best. Thanks!

B-Movie - 18 January 2010 - 19 April 2010

I like the new direction even if I was a fan of the pinup sitting on the chair !

edit: **** I was wrong, it's 19 march :(

02-18-2010, 11:46 AM
He's right, the still image deadline is only a month away:

• The Image category will run for 8 weeks. Finishing on 19th March 2010.
• The Video categories will run for 12 weeks. Finishing on 19th April 2010.

Everyone has said it already but I'll repeat that the character models are outstanding. The paintover looks good too but the Barbarella style metal bikini on Bonobo Jones , that's plain scary!

I installed my brand new copy of Modo and spent the night playing with it. So far I'm really impressed with the speed and quality of the renders. Also, the shaders library is pretty sweet. These are my very first renders on it. A lot to learn but it seems very straight forward. Here is the baby bonobo again, just now in Modo. I detected some problems on my normal map, mostly below his chin. I'll fix it when I get the whole detailing finalized and add all the additional maps.

He's so cute Kris =]

02-18-2010, 01:53 PM
That's beautiful, he looks deep in thought wondering how he's going to pay the bills. Fantastic.

02-18-2010, 07:23 PM
thanks a lot man!

thanks! Yeah, much better after some rest. Now it's time to RUN!

thanks man (x2). Yeah, this is all normal maps and it looks pretty decent so far but still needs a nice finer bump map to break the specular.

thank you so much!

hahaha! That article is priceless. Thanks for that!

thank you sir!

yep, good times but I've got old and a lot of newer artists are kicking my ass in this competition. I guess I'm working to have something cool and *finally* new on my portfolio. Besides, being a moderator will make things harder for me anyway, for obvious reasons :hmm:

listen to StayFrosty... according to the system "image time left: 25 days, 9 hours, 39 minutes, 5 seconds" but it sounds off to me, since the deadline is on the 19, making it 29 days left, not 25... weird.

thanks Melanie ;)

thanks! I'm glad he is communication his little emotions. It's an important thing

02-18-2010, 07:47 PM
Looking absolutely superb already Krishnamurti - just as your imagery always does. Outstanding.

02-19-2010, 12:01 AM
Interesting dichotomia between face wrinkles and small inch :).Very nice expression and eyes.

02-20-2010, 12:27 AM
thank you so much! I love everything in your portfolio. Beautiful stuff!

yeah, he is my little Benjamin "Bonono" Button :)

02-21-2010, 11:01 PM
This thread just keeps getting crazier Kris!! Can't wait to see the update with the outfits for them :buttrock:

02-21-2010, 11:08 PM
Composition much work Beckenb :arteest: auer

02-22-2010, 02:04 AM
yea amazing sculpt like always im lovein it

02-22-2010, 02:23 AM
Ello Kris,
This is one long thread! lol But I loved every post of it! :D

Where to start...
Your overall concept looks like its still coming along, but a truly nice piece! Although I'm not sure about the space costumes, your last Pre-Vis/WIP is starting to explain a title a bit more of the titles you've been working with..
Which is one of the few things I could critique on. I was wondering how you were going to pull in the IRS/Death and Taxes bit into your image. I do love the little guy the with piggy bank!

Your Pin-Up looks like a perfect cheesecake! Done so well. I especially love her doll like skin! You have brilliant textures and lighting.
Also, your models are done very well, especially the monkeys!

Cheers mate! Can't wait to see how this one finishes up!

02-22-2010, 03:00 AM
awww cute lol I do like where it's going very much!

02-22-2010, 05:19 AM
... talent, humor, sculpt, paint, design. I can't wait to see what twist it might take next. Your hard work is paying off big time - keep going, I wish you good luck and send you a little positive energy for the surely late nights Kris.

02-22-2010, 07:15 AM

02-22-2010, 12:38 PM

Really cant wait to see it all come together

02-22-2010, 01:23 PM
She is looking awesome, great expression and great details

02-22-2010, 03:11 PM
Omg as always your sculpts are amazing. You texture and render so well. Its so crisp and clean. Is modo really that good? Do u like it that much?
And nice ray gun. I made my gun for my scene as well. I haven't posted it up yet though.

02-22-2010, 04:07 PM
Good stuff here, Kris!
You’ve really captured that Bonobo 'bonobocity'. When I first saw the name 'Bonobo Jones' I thought it may have been a play on the old tv detective, 'Barnaby Jones'. Don’t ask–he didn’t even have a monkey, let alone a bonobo.
The woman's face has that classic 50s pinup-art look.
It’s also interesting to see and hear about your Modo progress.
Good luck.

02-22-2010, 04:46 PM
I really liked the yellow hat more... she's great, I love the face

02-22-2010, 05:00 PM
Amazing characters! Good luck!

02-22-2010, 06:09 PM
This gets better all the time. Very sexy wind-up doll! Love the ray gun, too. :buttrock:

02-22-2010, 06:20 PM
What a nice toy Kris! I love it!

02-22-2010, 06:34 PM
as you wish my friend ;)

aradarena, Odhran, HeadSmell, Paperboy, medunecer, webhead,
thank you so very much!

yeah, I'm still trying to figure the title out. Not sure about it or it's placement.
Thank you so much!

thanks x2 Mag! I agree. I might switch colors of his hat. Those are too dark and are not contrasting well.

thanks for stopping by, my friend! I hope you enjoy the progress as much as I'm enjoying building these characters!

ohhhh MachineFlesh, good and bad memories it brings... hahaha! Thanks!

yep, Modo is really good and very easy to setup. Still confused about the materials part but I'll get there. Thanks!

thanks a lot man. No, I don't know the TV series but now I'm curious to watch it! But his name is more likely to be changed to Bonobo Rogers or Bonobo Gordon at this point :D

yeah! I love that raygun toy too ;)

02-22-2010, 07:28 PM
Very nice update, she is pretty. Her face and expression are working.
I guess your references here are Nicole Kidman, Sinead O' Connor:D and Megalex.
Megalex might be a good inspiration for your character : http://www.humano.com/v3/prod_pic/megalex_1.jpg
Keep it up.

02-22-2010, 10:22 PM
Love the sweetheart updates Kris her eyes are particularly beautiful love her anatomy too!! I'm interested on your change to modo so far into a challenge? was this a rendering speed thing or efficiency setting up many characters??

02-22-2010, 10:50 PM
This entry makes me feel so motivated! so inspired! every update is a joy to the eyes!, and thank you so much for that! damn she looks hot!! even without hair she is so beautiful! the face and the pose is wonderful!

02-23-2010, 01:30 AM
wonderfull progress. cant wait to see more, or even better, cant wait to see this finished
the jury will have a really hard choice. but imho its you or vimmy , both entrys are top class so far , keep it up

02-23-2010, 05:08 AM
It just keeps getting better Kris! Just curious what are you going to do to break the spec up like you mentioned. Since a normal map is already plugged into the bump slot, how will you incorporate a finer bump map then, my suggestion would be to use a fine detailed texture convert it into a normal map using nvidia photoshop plugin and then overlay that in your current normal map. It's a technique we use a lot in the games industry that could help you break the spec up, otherwise, you could just use the fine detailed texture to break the spec map up itself, but that would be more of an unnatural effect.

Looking forward to your tutorial walkthrough in the end Kris. Two thumbs up!

02-23-2010, 06:28 AM
absolutely stunning! she looks so realistic and love the outfit

02-23-2010, 06:53 AM
Hi Kris, I love where you've taken this and the new outfit is fantastic! The details are simply amazing as well, eagerly awaiting new updates! :applause:

02-23-2010, 08:09 AM
Hello sir,

Idea/beauty-wise, I'd say this and Vimmy's got the front seats already.

-Boring part starts-
It's hard to read your renders, not that they are not good, they are insanely good and hard to understand. I'd like to know your workflow. Do you spend your time on shaders instead of trying passes? You mentioned that you spend time in Photoshop as well, do you mean you also create passes? Because lighting isn't that bright but highlights are very high, is it some sort of high-value trick? Too much questions, sorry about that, but I don't get the chance to ask the master of masters very often, I hope you don't mind. Over years, I spent looking at your works for hours sometimes.

Very, very kind regards.

02-23-2010, 12:29 PM
Absolutely fantastic, everything is perfect, the Et the bonobo father and children, and the woman is very sexy and beautiful, you are really a master man.

02-23-2010, 07:10 PM
heh, the ray gun made me smile ... pewpew :)

02-23-2010, 07:17 PM
nop, none of the above :)
I'm solely using Gil Elvgren's pin-up work as the main source of inspiration for her face and expression.

the reason why is because we have John Knoll working with it at my job and getting some amazing renders out of it :) I think it's not quite as great and optimized as VRay as it seems, but the software is evolving fast and the render quality is already pretty damn good. But the main reason is the easy to setup lighting and shading. It doesn't have a fastskin shader like mentalray, but you can layer other maps and get some cool results as well. Also, the ability to see a super fast interactive/almost realtime render is a HUGE time saver, including SSS, reflections, normals etc etc etc. Things that took me a ton of render passes in mental ray now are fixed on the fly and this is priceless!

thank you so much!

thanks! In this case I think Vimmy got the edge man. Being a moderator doesn't help my cause, quite the opposite, believe me. BUT, there are MANY great entries in this challenge. There is always someone who don't post a lot and then BAM! A great final entry is posted. So, never count anyone out because it's a great group of artists participating

I do have a noisy spec map to help it a little but I can make it more evident by adding a second bump map. Modo allows you to have normal map and bump map so it's easy to add it. Thanks man!

kojala, Noodlz,
thank you!

I normally use a very strong back light to produce that effect. If 1 is the maximum default value for brightness, I sometimes crank it to 3. But it all depends of the proximity of the lighting source, the kind of attenuation you're using, HDRI map, etc. As for the passes, since I'm new to Modo, I'm trying to get the beauty pass as close as I can to the ideal render and then I go from there, spitting the necessary passes for post. I know some people don't worry too much about it and "fix in comp" but I'm a little maniac about getting things looking good before I add all that fancy overused-new-lens-flare called "chromatic aberration". I added some to my images but man, I'm already tired of it because even screen grabs have chromatic aberration in it nowadays :D
Thanks for your kind words!

thank you so much man! Abracao

haha, cool!

02-23-2010, 10:35 PM
Wicked stuff , simply awesome. Fodão! A pin-up tá uma gata velho! :)

02-23-2010, 11:35 PM
Fantastic stuff man! Looking forward to the final!

02-23-2010, 11:46 PM
Excellent as usual Kris. Noticed something in your last wip shot, earnings need gravity to em. Keep up the awesomeness.

02-24-2010, 12:39 AM
This is absolutely insane! :applause: I am looking forward to following! Good luck!

02-24-2010, 02:35 AM
How good and inspiring is to see a real genius at work... I'm not following the contest, and just became aware of your thread today. But man, it's amazing, and real worth to look every WIP you posted. You are a great reference for me, since I started studying CG, and wow, it's just turning better and better. Congrats, Kris, you make us brazilians very proud.

Here's some progress on the bonobo pose. Lots to be fixed but I'm happy that everything is at least half way there and rendering together without problems. Time to start freaking out... 18 days left??? You got to be kidding me!

Dude, wow, Everything is coming together great. Don't be so freaked out about the 18 days left, you are waaaaayyyyy ahead of me haha. Leave the freaking out to the late starters.

02-25-2010, 03:56 PM
Wow Kris, everything you do looks amazing..
Those renders are still from Modo, or Maya?
Modo looks nice..Any tips in lighting. shaders..

You have defenitly that prize in your hands man..

Regards Kris..:applause:

02-25-2010, 04:43 PM
You are definitely the one to beat in this contest IMO. Everything looks fantastic, as usual. My only slight criticism is the monster. He looks too good. All the characters, their costumes, the ray gun, look like they are right out of a 50's sci-fi movie. However, the monster looks too slick, and modern, as if from a different era. A minor point considering, but something that caught my eye.

02-25-2010, 06:02 PM
killer update kris :) keep it up two weeks left, go go go :arteest:

02-25-2010, 07:35 PM
muito obrigado bro!

thanks, me too! Can't wait to finish this one and get some well deserved sleep! Full time job doesn't work perfectly with those challenges for me

thanks for noticing! Yep, I transposed her head and everything else but didn't have the time to adjust everything but I will!

thank you so much!

this was a very sweet compliment man. Thank you SO very much! Valeu mesmo bro!

man, I have to build so many things it's kinda depressing... too much ambition, too little time! :D I'm a late starter myself since I noticed the challenge a week after it started. Good luck finishing yours man!

yep, all modo render. Tip is: keep it simple. Get a nice HDRI simulating studio light (or buy the SLI kit), position it to get a nice side lighting and then start adding some area lights for back light and spec for their eyes for example. Don't forget to turn off the default spotlight and environment sky.
This setup didn't took me more than a night to set.

I totally agree. Still trying to find a good strategy to "crapptize" the monster :D
Thanks man!

I'm going! I'm going! Somewhere...

02-25-2010, 09:41 PM
I love it! ooks great! Keep up the good work! :)

02-25-2010, 09:53 PM
Hi Antropus, good to see you one more time in this great contests.

I love to see all your progress, you are doing a nice job. Keep going

Btw, nice idea for the image. You have all the guns

02-25-2010, 09:55 PM
this is the winner for me, hands down. everything you are putting into this piece is just class.
i'm only just getting into 3d modelling myself. i'm an absolute beginner, and this is where i want to be. i know this forum is for constructive critiscism so this is my first post and i'll give you my honest opinion for what its worth. i just think that it's almost too sophisticated and clever in style and detail to be real b-movie material! i absolutely love this image and can't wait to see it finished, and my only comment is that it's not shit enough...hope you know what i mean! there was just something really stylish about the girl when she looked like some kind of unfinished 50's mannequin. whatever, this will be a great finished piece, i love it. cheers. snitch

02-25-2010, 10:16 PM
woooh i really like it great job :applause:

02-25-2010, 10:21 PM
Amazing work Kris, nice concept and wonderful execution. I love the expresions and the composition, the whole scene is really evocative and with a good sense of valance.

-I was wondering, since you render the same scene in both maya mental ray and in modo, can you tell me please which one render faster?

-What material do you use for the teeth?

Thanks and congratulation for your work

02-25-2010, 11:07 PM
great work! will you leave them bald or will you give them hair? What software will you use for the hair!

02-26-2010, 02:42 AM
Great pose and dynamics ! Is it still ? ;)
Good job.

02-26-2010, 08:22 AM
Hey Kris. Outstanding work. I'm really loving all the drama going on between the bonobo and the pin up. A few things concern me though. If I may, I think her hands are perhaps a bit too big? Also with the adult bonobo leaning on her would she not have to counter his weight a lot more? Just suggestions. Hope I don't offend you :)

02-26-2010, 08:41 AM
Man, i go away 2 weeks for work and when i come back u have build stunning stuff again.
Some really bad kicking in the butt$ here.

02-26-2010, 11:05 AM
Kris, this is amazing! I haven't followed the challenge and I was blown away when I saw your models.
You truly captured the spirit of the 50's horror movie.

02-26-2010, 11:18 AM
Stunning, your work is inspiring. I look forward to some hair too. I don't care if its post or 3D, I just think it would help finish the image. Looking forward to the final image!!!

02-26-2010, 12:20 PM
Thats great Kris,

Great to see you in the mix too!!! This is going to be mighty fine.

02-26-2010, 12:23 PM

Man, that is looking awesome seeing all the characters together

02-26-2010, 02:19 PM
Hey Kris, i`m very happy to see you again in this contests. I love to see your wip page, i always learn a lot here. :applause:

Congrats for this amazing entry, i love the little monkey, and the girl is so beatiful and natural.
I` can`t wait to see the final image.

goofara, e2m,
thank you very much!

muito obrigado!

thanks for your honest input. I completely agree with you and it concerns me too. But I think that the way this work will be finished will add a lot to the "shitty" atmosphere we need... lets hope! :D

thanks. Modo renders faster, considering the SSS receiving direct and indirect light (HDRI). MR takes forever to calculate the SSS when you have indirect turned on. I started doing some render tests with hair and this will add a ton of render time, but thank God we can render those puppies using render passes!
As for the teeth, eyeballs and body, I started all of them by using that reddish rubber material that comes with modo. Then I tweaked the depth of the SSS, changed color, added maps, added specular (sharper and more reflexive for the teeth) etc.

thanks man! Well, the intention is to render everything in Modo, inluding the hair. I know that I'll hit a wall at some point, due to the complexity of the scene (I already got a few crashes) but I think that with a good planning I can render the whole thing out of Modo.

still moving! Thanks.

man, no offense taken! I totally agree with you and I thought the same once I posed them. But then I realized "you know, this is a fantasy shot where a monkey is playing a super hero anyway, so maybe that robot-doll girlfriend of his might actually be pretty strong and heavy, that's why he is climbing her as a tree!". Then I left it the way it is: a tree-doll-strong-girlfriend, powerful enough to not move with all the weight applied. That's the magic about fantasy... and of course, to BS is an art that I'm mastering :D

Dimi! You're back!!! Dude, we have less then three weeks to finish this thing. Go, go, go!

thank you so much man! Love your models

Thanks and don't worry! I have something baking in the oven. Dunno if will look good, but they will most surely have hair/fur ;)

hey Paul! Thanks a lot for stopping by!! I could not resist to the theme. It was stronger then me :)

... wait, not so fast! But thanks :)
As I stated before, there's always great work and great competition at the end so I'm just worried if I'll be able to finish this in a timely manner at this point
My main objective is always to learn some new tool and have fun.

thanks a lot!

obrigado meu amigo! I'm glad you like it so far! I hope the final image is not a complete failure (everything can happen at the last minute when everything gets together!).

02-26-2010, 09:46 PM
Is an awesome entry! Hope you find the time, can't wait to see the finished piece.

Good luck:)!

02-26-2010, 10:14 PM
Freaking retarded man. Retardedly good! I know you're using Modo to render but I have a question about rendering with final gather if you don't mind. How do you, personally, render large images. I've tried rendering in strips and then assembling them and it never works out. I've also tried storing the final gather maps and then rendering with them with the maps cached still doesn't look how I want it to. I'm working with 4gb of ram. Thx man you rock!

02-27-2010, 12:47 AM
Excellent. Always loved your work for a very long time.

02-27-2010, 02:24 AM
I hope so too! Thank you!

Thanks man! Hmmm, I always render everything without many problems with MR but I have 8GB of RAM. I never needed to do anything special to get things rendered so I don't know if I can help you on this, unfortunately :(
If you can add another 4GBs that would be perfect, but if you can't, then maybe it's a good idea to ask on the Maya/Render forum. There are lots of experienced artists working with MR in there and they are normally very helpful! Good luck man!

thanks a lot!

02-27-2010, 08:03 PM

I only have 4gbs as well and use the "lay tiles" script from Creative Crash. Here is the link:

So far it works pretty well, except that you also have to copy and paste the alpha channel as well.

02-27-2010, 08:43 PM
Man, I'm speechless. No, I have one: perfection.:bowdown:

Wow, such awesome detail, are you using just normal maps or any extra magical techniques? How do you generate your normals btw, xnormal? Sry for the questions, just curious because I am still trying to figure out how to generate awesome normals (mine come out looking decent, but i just cant get them right). Keep the fantastic work, I have been watching this thread and its just amazing. :D

new elements quickly put together in replacement of the sketches. Everything is being tested and nothing is finished at this point. The mushrooms were placed and rendered using the replicators feature in modo. It's impressive how it renders 10 million worth of polys in about a few minutes!

Gio Nakpil
03-01-2010, 05:15 PM
Thats looking awesome Kris! I'm lovin' the environments...10 mil polys?? Good to know Modo can push that much. Havent rendered anything beyond 1 mil, but eventually I'll need to render lots of polygons.

03-01-2010, 05:16 PM
Looks very nice. Don't know if you can find room to make the title a little bigger. It's looking a bit cramped at the moment.

03-01-2010, 05:23 PM
I love how the poster looks, its very eye catching. Good luck.

03-01-2010, 07:48 PM
fantastic work man! can't wait to see it finished and at super high rez ;)

03-01-2010, 10:40 PM
lol the actors' names are awesome :)

03-01-2010, 11:27 PM
This is amazing, I really can't find anything to say about it other than that. When do I get my glasses?

03-01-2010, 11:54 PM
Very nice compositing and fonts chromatic scheme! I would add more colors with smooth variation in the background, and would maybe level down the lighting contrast over your cybergirl skin.
However grayscaled background, you get the B-Movie style.
Keep it up.

03-02-2010, 01:47 AM
Great 50's colour scheme, it's realy coming together, fantastic.

03-02-2010, 02:26 AM
Oh man, what can i say. Looks pro

03-02-2010, 07:49 AM
Good idea and realisation!

03-02-2010, 08:28 AM
The poster design is coming along great!! The different elements are falling together and am looking forward to your finished entry!! :buttrock:

03-02-2010, 12:09 PM
This is coming together great. Never doubted you:D.

Lol the taxman from outer space. I'd be afraid for sure. That poster is complete chaos. Its great. haha. All it needs is some burning cities, it looks like you have something similar in the works. hehe.

I'm loving modo. The rendering is fantastic. I'm fiddling with its fur/hair stuff. Its great. I'm looking forward too see how you get around her hair. Good luck!

03-02-2010, 03:50 PM
Hey Kris !

Man you're out of your minds !:buttrock: this looks better and better every time i check it, and you're update it so fast that i can't keep up !
Can't wait to see it finished!:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Cheers mate !

03-03-2010, 05:07 PM
This is really coming together. I am so wanting the 6-d shades for this one!

03-03-2010, 05:24 PM
Your anatomy knowledge and modeling skills are amazing. I´m very curious how the final piece will look and btw. the gold pants are really awesome! :D

03-03-2010, 07:51 PM
Freelah, AlexaSharlOt, handlebar, G0MEZ, dimke, Paperboy, AndreiSzasz,
thanks a lot!

those were inspired by my own gold panties... oooops. I should not say that in public!
The actor's names are inspired by true events! :D

all normal maps generated from ZBrush. I normally export a midres model, not the lowres. Something like 50k to 120k so I get the silhouette closer to the hires model and then I slap a normal map on it. That's it!

thanks! Working on it :)

hahaha! Yeah, ape love is all that this world needs! Oh, and gold panties too!

hmmm... now you're into something here. In fact, this is pretty hardcore work to do after hours if you have a full time job. So, yeah, VERY FEW hours of sleep sometimes... talking about 2-4 hours some nights. I guess it's all for the love of doing this stuff but it's not healthy at all after a couple of days. So glad it's going to end soon so I can sleep for 72h straight :D

Gio Nakpil,
thanks man! Yeah, around 10mi polys but that includes the replicated mushrooms. The actual geometry in the scene is way lighter than that but the geometry for the replicators is generated at render time. Also, if you're running the 64bit version on WinXP64 then the amount of data it handles as fairly better as it seems.

you know, I'm still thinking about that tittle and I want to make sure the poster will showcase all the modeling/lighting/painting done for the challenge. If I make the tittle too big then it's going to take away a huge chunk of what those challenges are for: show what you can do, given a theme and a deadline!
Working on it. Thanks!

me too! I hope Modo can handle the hires render o_O

Remi and thejeff,
oh yeah, everything looks sweeter in 6D! Forget about Avatar. 6D is the new wave!!!

Thanks. Sure, I still have to rework the areas of contrast, making sure the focus will be on the main characters. The color palette is been constantly reworked and the new version of the poster (not posted yet) look different already.

it's organized chaos man! :D
About the hair, I'm still concerned about it since I just started playing and doing tests and realized it gets reaaaaally heavy sometimes. If everything goes down the drain, plan B I tell myself is: paint it by hand you lazy sonafabiscuits!

thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only gold panties lover around! :D

03-04-2010, 07:32 AM
Haha. I like it. Yea if modo doesn't play nice for the hair just paint it:D. I have a question though. Is the pin up doing a blue steal? If so, its awesome.

03-04-2010, 11:02 AM
Nice new additions in this update Kris, replicator feature sounding pretty cool I know this is all work in progress I think the mushrooms if you could make some of them bigger maybe the ones that are a little closer to the camera to add some variations that would be cooler especially since they are so detailed loving the feel of this piece so far do you another detail pass to go on the alien guy? he's my favourite character in this piece some of the wips of him are sweet how do you plan on finishing him like is there going to be heavily detailed wrinkle pass or more textural etc? Loving it dood! keep going I would have run out of steam weeks back lol.

Still studying the composition, changing colors, adding elements etc. The monster shader is not final at all. He is not going to be that shiny. Everything is mostly placeholders, just to see how everything plays together. More too come, possibly over the weekend, since I got involved with other stuff to do :-(

03-04-2010, 05:37 PM
very nice progress once again. how bout the monkeys and fur ? i cant wait to see the penetration between the monkeys hand and the girls costume to be fixed :) its pretty distracting, but i understand that its still a wip

03-04-2010, 05:39 PM
Really cool the brain on the taxman! And the new shader to.

03-04-2010, 07:04 PM
muito obrigado bro! Great reading such sweet compliment.
I was away from the forums for a long time too but glad we are back :)
Thanks a lot!

hahahaha no! But man, now that you mentioned, they kinda look like they were separated at birth!
http://www.mediabistro.com/unbeige/original/blue%20steel.jpg :D

thanks! The alien has to somehow look cheesy so I'm not going for extreme detail but I want to make it look at least as a latex mask. The way it is right now is very shiny but I'll add some maps to help reducing the specularity. Agree about the mushrooms. Hero ones will be placed by hand.

did you just mention penetration, monkey and girl in the same sentence??? o_O ... jk
No worries, that was fixed and will be posted in one of the next updates. Hair and fur are being studied right now. I think I can get it looking alright. Thanks!

new shader is temp! But thanks man. Where are your updates btw? This is a w.i.p. challenge so give us some goodies!

03-04-2010, 07:44 PM
I been busy last week . a bit of traveling. I'll try to update stuff during the next week.

03-04-2010, 11:07 PM
Hi Kris,
Very cool render and scheme color. I would maybe soften asteroid edges that look angular to me.
Great update :lightbulb
Keep it up !

spent my day learning hair, render passes and network rendering with Modo. I wish I had more time to style the fur the way it should be but I'm almost calling it finished otherwise I'll not be able to meet the deadline :(

03-07-2010, 11:35 AM
Looks fantastic!

03-07-2010, 12:38 PM
wonderful work Kris!!

03-07-2010, 03:37 PM
I think the hair looks pretty good so far, for first spins around the block with it in Modo. The nebulous somewhat unkempt hair look is par for the course for these guys, though in it’s current state it does make him look like a bit of an older chap.

03-07-2010, 08:18 PM
I have been following the progress of the image and it's turning out stunning ... awesome job man.. The hair on the chimp looks great.... if you dont get to add the hair to the final image its still impressive.. very cool man. definitely one of the best! congrats

03-07-2010, 09:42 PM
Hi there, I like that last render, look great! I guess modo has the best render.

But I found the fur can be better, there is a problem with the antialiasing and maybe it can have more fur. I found the fur actually is not in pair with the modeling.

Have you tried Hairfarm for 3dsmax? If not you must try it, it's extremely fast, realistic and easy to comp. you can extract a hair pass, shadow, etc.
The way you do hair is simply the best way to do it, in hairfarm you are actually modeling them so it's has cool as modeling is :) and you got lot's of control over hairs
and materials, way much more then hair and fur and you get no problem with antialiasing or steps in the hairs.

If you check my cgportfolio I have a haircut done with it, and it take like 2 min to render.(depending on the size of the render of course)

That said I love your entry, one of the best for sure. Great modeling and renders going on here.

I like what you've accomplished with Modo's hair. I've spent a week trying to refine modo hair and it didnt look much better than what you've got now.

Just a warning, Spending more time on it will not make Modo hair any better. Styling and curling and clumping is, as of yet, out of its reach.

03-08-2010, 07:57 AM
Hey Kris. The fur is looking good so far. Are you adding more passes to the render settings?

Cause it still looks a bit too "hard". Love the lighting by the way. I'm so jealous. hehe.

some more tests with the fur. At the end, because they're going to be rendered relatively small, I think the backlight will show it in a subtle way, which is good since I want to preserve some of the model details. There a re problems with the baby's eyes and the big bonobo's texture but I'll get there

Lol man...Awesome work  cant stop laughing at the little hat :)

03-08-2010, 06:07 PM
Antropus, I am amazed by your work! you are working an exelent 3d very quickly with very many of diferent variations!

Best regards

03-08-2010, 06:26 PM
Very good! Hairs are giving another look of the models! The anatomy is perfect as always! I also liked the coins! The brightness in the right hand of the baby was nice!
Congratulations Master!

03-08-2010, 07:39 PM
agruberdesign, yolao,
thanks a ton!

I see you're back on track and kicking ass. Awesome updates man!

it looks angular because of the craters in it. Thanks!

thank you man!

I totally agree. I did some more work on it and with the fur more subtle against the backlight, I think it's just enough to show that he has hair but still preserving all the surface detail. Thanks!

thank you so much for your kind words!

thanks a lot for your input man. I love the work on your portfolio. Great stuff!
I'll stick with modo on this one but I'll make sure to check that one out on some next project. Thanks again!

I agree. Thanks man!

I just discovered that trick about rendering multiple passes to make the hair softer!! It works but the render take foreeeeeeeever...

how can you laugh at the sadness of this little boy? Shame on you! :D

thank you so much for your kind words!

valeu bro!

03-08-2010, 08:09 PM
He looks so adorable! I just want to pick him up & spin his beanie propeller...

03-09-2010, 03:39 AM
lol me too - so cute :)
what's the lighting in this scene - is it some sort of modo specific thing? I guess they have their own renderer? well looks wicked and the hair looks real good for the first try

03-09-2010, 10:34 AM
Lol Kris. Yea they take insanely long. It looks a hella lot better though. Its only a still so what the heck ;). Its a pity it does a pass on the entire image and not just the fur. I gotta say those soft shadows are beautiful though.

03-09-2010, 10:39 AM
This is looking really great. Love the alien design, and the girl has a great Gil Elvgren style expression. Can't wait to see the final..!

03-09-2010, 01:05 PM
Zarpadoo!! awesome work! congratulations!!, maybe the best i seen in this challenge...

03-10-2010, 09:57 AM
Wow, amazing work !

Actually you can style hair in modo.

wow man all this is looking very nice together, my best wishes, :buttrock: :buttrock: , well if i may i want to add some input, i think that the monkeys weight must affect more to the girl but probably gravity is different of course, if so maybe add some clothes or something kinda floating?...nah ...everything is awesome anyways sir :arteest: :arteest:

03-10-2010, 08:40 PM
thanks! Your entry is looking GREAT btw! I love the style man. Keep it up!

thanks Mag! Yep, Modo has it's own render engine and its VERY GOOD! You should try it ;-)

I totally agree. Maybe on the next version they will find a way to optimize the hair pass thingy.

yep, Gil Elvgren is the sole reference for her face and facial expression. Thanks for noticing ;)

thanks a lot!

oh! Thanks a lot for posting that link! I'll need all the help I can get in order to finish up her hair!

you're 110% right my friend but I got news: all this stuff concerning interaction between characters, points of pressure and gravity etc were already addressed a couple of days ago, but I still need to post new renders ;)
Now the characters look like they are touching. I'll post some updates over the weekend showing it.

03-10-2010, 09:16 PM
Just thought about posting my todo list (9 days left and no renders done for the final comp yet... I'm actually scared I'll not make it! o_O)

- improve to general lighting so I can get some realism on the apes but still keep the warn feel of the previous renders of the girl. Also add back and directional lights to improve the drama and make easier to read the image as a whole. - DONE!
- keep working on the color scheme. There are way too many similar color schemes in this challenge and I think it's because of the nature of it but I'm looking for something slightly original. - DONE!
- model the 3D glasses (very hard stuff...) and tweak all texts and layout.

Bonobo Gordon:
- model his bracelet - DONE!
- model a gun holder pin - DONE!
- tweak the hair a tiny bit more - DONE!
- tweak the corners of his mouth and lips - DONE!

Baby Bonobo:
- improve the eye shader and lighting so it's easier to read the direction he is looking at - DONE!
- resize (down) and reposition all his coins, following the ground relief - DONE!
- slight tweak of his mouth expressionDONE!
- tweak the hair a tiny bit more - DONE!

Jessica Dollface:
- model all interactions between her and the bonobo (contact points, pressure and gravity) - DONE!
- fix some more evident anatomy problems - DONE!
- reduce the size of her hands - DONE!
- model the hair and colar pieces - DONE!
- add and style her hair. If it doesn't work, plan B is to add it as a model. Since she is a "doll", it should work just fine. I still want to try adding hair though - DONE!

Manny (the Alien)
- model his metallic arms, badge and tie - DONE!
- work on the overall shaders and lighting - DONE!

Foreground Elements:
- reduce the noise on the ground plane. It's interfering and making hard to read the character silhouettes. - DONE!
- add random stones and fine patches of grass in a few places - DONE!
- desaturate the color of the mushrooms on the tree. They are drawing too much attention right now - DONE!
- add hero mushrooms, bigger and behind the characters - DONE!
- add the second layer of spiky rocks (right now it's just a duplicate of the foreground mesh)

Background Elements:
- add the random structures to the background
- add the crater to the background (already modeled but lacking texturing and lighting) - DONE!
- add strings to hold the fake flying saucers and planets in place - DONE!
- add final fog and clouds
Enough for 9 days? I hope it is... :banghead:

I'm hoping he can finish in time, but anyway the most important is to see the finished image! I'm anxious, I hope I can!

03-11-2010, 12:37 AM
Thanks Vimmy! I can't wait to see your finished piece too! 9 days left... damn!

no no no, it's all good! I didn't mention this before in the thread because those changes are kinda recent ;)

I'm trying but dang, sooooo much work...

03-11-2010, 01:04 AM
Greetings Kris, I am struck by your awesome modeling and texturing talent. It is a wonderful image. Here is my humble and somewhat delusional suggestions: the IRS space ships have tractor beams pulling in dollar bills and dollar symbols in and a few people, to add to the story. Bill board in the back ground, "Alien IRS agents harassing you? Call Chimpzee Accountants Today!" The IRS agent meets the government dress code: thick glasses, dress shirt & cheesy tie. Flat, distant people and chimps wearing barrels only, victims of the alien IRS. And the crater in the background could be vortex of money.

The first vid is really interesting as as talks about rendering hairs using Monte Carlo whilst using Irradiance Caching for the rest. ~Much more efficient apparently.

Love this thread. Fantastic work. I came to via a link Brad Peebler put up about it on the Luxulogy site, so they must be pretty stoked about it too. Well done!

may I write something ? :)
amazing stuff and what a rate !
it is pleasure to look at your thread
I have always admired you, you are such an inspiration for people, thanks for that :) and keep going.
Let's get down to bussiness and ask what I wanted to ask.So, could you tell us a bit about your workflow especially I'm interested in your basemesh, have you got just one basemesh for all of your characters ? ( I'm not sure but maybe I have already read about it in one of your threads )
and what is next ? have you got the idea of your character in your mind before you start sculpting or you just starting sculpting without any ideas and you do some experiments ?
and my request, Can you show any screen of your basemesh of one of your character? the simplest basemesh.

thank you for any answer.
good luck,

03-11-2010, 11:40 PM

I have the same thing happening with a lot of noise showing up in modo’s fur renders.
The one thing that helped me a bit is upping the Render Properties antialiasing samples to 32 or higher in the Shader Tree.
It reduces this noise a lot, the only down side is it does increase your render time by 2 to 3 times longer.

Btw, for a cool back lighting effect, try the Physical Sun with a time setting 04:00, location Lux HQ.

Anyway great work!

03-12-2010, 01:27 AM
It is impossible to look at this little guy and not smile. Perfect! :)

03-12-2010, 08:35 PM
that's what I want to see! People looking at it and having ideas about what could happen. Although most of your suggestions are out of reach, because of the time constrain, I'll use some bills to help to tell the story. Thank you so much for your input!

oh yeah, all this helps man! Thanks for the awesome links!

I hope I'll not let you down!

hmmmm, dunno what my girlfriend will think about it but I'll ask her. Wait.............................................
.................................... ok, she said no! Oh! She just added "NO FREAKING WAY!!!" :D

thank you so much. Your entry is looking amazing already!

this is the sweetest comment and reason why I do this stuff. Thank you so much.

I had no clue he had posted a link to this thread O_o. So, I guess the pressure is on me now, as if I didn't have enough yet :D

I normally have a general idea in my head that I develop on the modeling stage already. I never know exactly where the work is going, how the characters will look at the end etc. It's almost like discovering those creatures in a surprising way. It starts as a concept 3D sketch and all of the sudden, those creatures develop their own personalities and at this point I'm the one serving to them, because somehow they became stronger than any of my initial intentions. Hard and crazy to describe but that's exactly how it happens. It's almost like the characters were there already, just waiting for me to help them show up. Sometimes I like the way they look like, sometimes not, but that's what keeps me excited, to get to know those characters at some point!

I have too much work on my plate right now but I promise to post detailed information about the wireframes, shading, lighting etc, as soon as I have the chance! And yes, all characters shared the exact same topology at some point but where refined to conform to the new form needs.

thanks for the tip! I'll try it out this weekend

your comment make me smile too. Thanks!

Updated todo list:

Foreground Elements:
- add the second layer of spiky rocks (right now it's just a duplicate of the foreground mesh)

Background Elements:
- add the random structures to the background
- add final fog and clouds

I know I'm a rookie and all..but I'm starting to get jealous!

I started putting everything together for the final renders. This is what I got for the main bonobo and I'm considering it final (other than a dollar bill in his hand and final color corrections). I just finished the work on the baby bonobo and I'm now working on the girl. I hope to get all characters ready for rendering today and the foreground elements tomorrow, so I can start rendering the main elements. The monster and background stuff renders way faster so I can keep working on it during the week.

03-13-2010, 11:06 PM
hi kris,looking really great!
bonobo look amazing right now,the hair look really great already, love the detail and element design on him, i am really looking forward for the girl,ah god...i always forgot her name...!?hmm.

just small advice, how about giving his gun some accent/color(small green light for example)
and i am not sure with his left toes(to much ballerina pose),imho.
you can complite ignor my opinion if you have better argument for that.

you dont need luck for your work.
you are amazing kris!

I just finished her hair. I'm actually quite pleased with the result, far better than I expected at first. All rendered in modo.

I think it works great with her character. Carrot orange that is. Now back to the monster dude, the last one waiting in line before I jump back to the foreground elements!

03-14-2010, 02:49 AM
Man i love redhead . She is pretty, and pretty cool!

03-14-2010, 03:33 AM
Hey Brother!
Just as the whole picture, her hair is fantastic!. Looks a little like Judy Jetson. Excellent!:applause:

Manny needed an ID. So it was time to look pretty and smile at the camera: "say cheese!" said the photographer, before he had his business closed for not paying his taxes on time... poor man.
Manny works for the IRS alright, but not the same one, as you can see. This one rules the whole galaxy mofo!

03-14-2010, 06:17 AM
Lol, Love Manny's smile; The eyes at the bottom actually make him seem like a nice guy and the eyes above make it seem like he is trying to force the smile like everyone does with ID pictures. Dollface could use a bit more color, she seems a bit pale but I'm sure the final result is going to kick ass.

03-14-2010, 06:21 AM
You and Vimmy have deffintely have the run for first place. Either one desserve to be on top.

One word..... Amazing!

Can't wait to see the final

03-14-2010, 11:12 AM
oh,i love everything from her,she is really prety,
now i know her name,thanks!
yeah manny's smile is so great! he can be nice guy as well if he want,
cu heri

03-14-2010, 11:38 AM
I'm hoping for an extension until June 2013 so I have a chance at achieving half the level of detail I see here. I'm not generally a great fan of 3D because it tends to look, well, 3D, but yours and a couple of others in this competition are managing to convert me.

03-14-2010, 12:01 PM
Simply stunning! Outstanding updates, Kris!

03-14-2010, 12:03 PM
ahahaha - that ID photo made my morning - great expression

03-14-2010, 06:29 PM
Wonderful work.
Looks better and better every time i see your updates.
Love the work. Its amazing.

03-14-2010, 09:58 PM
thanks ;)

IVO!!! Man, long time don't talk! How's this easy life treating you? Any new animation you've been working on? Cheers mate!

thanks x2 my friend! Can't wait to see your final one man!

Irawan (x2),
thanks for your suggestions! I'll add some light to the ray gun. About the bonobo's toes, they will be partially covered on the final comp so I'm not worrying too much about it :)
Thanks again!

man! Now that you said that I decided to do some research on internet and I found this picture:http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/21054a.jpg

Look at the outfits and the mom's hair color! Damn, I NEVER saw this before but it relates SO MUCH to what I'm going for!!! I guess this is a testament that my cheesy factor is spot on so far :D

thanks. Yeah, she will look "warmer" on the final comp.

and I can't wait to finish it... thanks!

I know how you feel man. It's easy to make things look CG and we see this all the time. But even if it looks CG, if it communicates and has emotion/personality, then you still can get something cool out of it. Now, if it looks too much like CG and also lacks of personality, then we both have a problem with those :)
Thank you so much for you comment man. I love your work!

thank you so much!

see? IRS aliens are not too bad after all!

thank you!

Finished the background crater and it's my very first highres image out of modo (original is 3500x3500 pixels). 100% Zbrush model. The smaller crater on the bottom wil not be visible in the final comp.
Now back to the other background stuff...

03-15-2010, 07:15 AM
some where along the line your art went from very good cg models, to absolutely exceptional 3d..I cant believe the rather "Flash Gordon" like suit that Mr Bonobo is wearing, what a pleasure this has been watching this grow from its first rendering stages. Cant wait for the final composite

best of luck

03-15-2010, 10:16 AM
Wow! its really coming together now Kris, that photo ID card is so funny well done I love this piece man. Doll face hair update looks great really well done!

03-15-2010, 02:05 PM
Dude I am really enjoying seeing your work progress its inspiring me in mine. I was wondering if you know if we should make our work look like a movie poster or can it be a scene? Also I am sure you here this every post but you are truly a master at your art :)

03-15-2010, 02:11 PM
ROCK SOLID work! Everything is perfect. My favourite element is the girl design and expression!...what can i say but AMAZING!:applause:

03-17-2010, 03:50 PM
This just keeps getting better and better Kris! You've done a superb job on the bonobo and I'm liking the new hair on the pin-up!

Keep going and godspeed to the finish line! :bounce:

03-17-2010, 08:36 PM
LightSovereign, Pteropus, OZ,
thank you so very much!

thanks a lot! About your question, I've read the instructions again and they don't mention anything about the final piece having to look like a poster. Is more about the story behind the characters. SO I'm guessing that it "can" be a poster but also a little scene that doesn't quite look like a poster is fine too, as long as the final piece is appealing visually and on the story as well.

Jesus spoke to me!!!
Thanks master :)

This is NOT the final comp. There are lots of little changes in progress now. So, here is some progress on the composition. I flipped it so the vilain looks more agressive now. He was a little passive on the right. I turned everything into black and white and then started painting/colorizing it. Still working on the atmosphere and other little elements here and there. The mushrooms are in different sizes/positions in the final comp. My main goal is to make the characters easy to read, which is not an easy task when you have two grey bonobos, meaning that both bright or dark background will blend anyway...
I forgot to colorize the piggy bank! Shame on me.
More to come. Final res images are being rendered as I speak...

03-17-2010, 09:48 PM
very B-moviesh , nice composition , but i have to say i dont like the 'evil' in the title , imho no need for it in the title, and its fighting with his pass photo , just my two cents, other than that , really nice progress

03-17-2010, 09:52 PM
Hey Kris - I know you're not finished yet, but I just wanted to say that I really cannot fathom the sheer volume of quality work you've done in this challenge. It's mind boggling.

I know that I'm not going to be able to finish my entry, so I feel a little stupid offering comment on yours, especially if you're rattling out the high res renders... But, now you've put all the elements 'together' there's a couple of things I thought of...

Manny's left claw closing around the heroes works really well, but it might add a little more oomph if you tilt his elbow upward (or even downward) in the composition as it's visually quite straight.

The title seems a bit small, but I think this is emphasised by the 'empty' space at the bottom left. I say empty, obviously there's the tree & mushrooms (and a lot of work!) there but compared to everything else in the image they seem less important.

One last thing is the little baby bonobo. I'm sure his pose is locked down now, but if you had him looking up at Gordon it would create a really nice dynamic - Manny looking at all three, Gordon looking back, Baby gordon looking up at his Dad & Jessica looking at the viewer.

Obviously I realise that at this stage the above equates to a sh**load more work when there's next to no time left, but I thought I'd offer them up anyway.

Again, amazing work - look forward to seeing the final piece! :D

Thanks guys! No worries at all! If there's a right moment to comment on it it's now, because I still can fix minor thing in comp, including changing the baby bonobo's eye direction for example (great suggestion btw AJ). Don't know about his arm at this point. Would be a brand new highres render to fix it and I don't know if I'll have the time. I might try something in comp. Lets see. I agree that the "evil" is out of place and all but I kinda thought that adding that would be so redundant that it could be cheesy enough for the challenge :D
I might remove it based on more comments.
Please keep suggestions coming.

ps.: I'm just happy this is almost over! I miss my bed a lot :)
Glad my computer will be rendering all night long...

Hey Antropus. I also did not know that image. But no doubt this was a very funny coincidence. Thanks for the feedback. :D

The tree region is pretty cool Kris! Looking for your final man.:buttrock:

03-17-2010, 10:14 PM
Thank Vimmy! I can't wait to see your final too man! You did an amazing job on this challenge. Good luck with the final touches/final renders! :)

Looking absolutely great, Kris. I laughed, I cried, and I bought a matinee ticket! Those characters are pitch-perfect!

03-18-2010, 01:32 PM
This keeps looking better and better, can't wait for the final image

03-18-2010, 02:05 PM
Hey Krish,
Congrats, everything looks great!

What's the render size you're working one? And how good (or bad) is Modo handling the render ?
Btw, what happened to the fur from the monkeys?

03-18-2010, 03:25 PM
Great job Kris, Looking forward to your final as well, One note, make sure you color manny's shirt a different color from his head, for a while until I saw his tie, I thought the badge was pinned to his nipple.

03-19-2010, 12:50 AM
Best of luck getting the final out!

Best of luck getting the final out!
I will really need it man :(
At this point, this whole work is in serious risk of not being completed. My machine at home was saying that more than 30 hours were necessary to complete the render in the morning. As a plan B, I'm rendering some of the elements as separated layers, in slightly lower resolutions and lower GI settings so I can try to get something tomorrow. Then I still have to prepare the final comp and then ftp, all of that REALLY close to the deadline. At this point, I'm sad and a little upset with myself for leaving everything for last minute. Two months of hard work can have a sad ending but I really hope not...

Yikes, well just remember that the art matters more than the contest. I'm sure you'll be able to pull off something astounding in time, but if not, you'll still have created something great. To me that's what matters.
Good luck man!

I'm sure you'll bust it out with enough time to spare man. Greg is right...in the end, you created something great and thats what is important. Contests are temporary, the art one produces isn't!

03-19-2010, 06:20 AM
Grea work Man you should be chuffed

03-19-2010, 10:07 AM
Yeah Kris I agree even if you have to comp slighty lower res images together its still going to be a great piece of artwork and one that will be going straight into my inspiration folder!! good luck for the final comp.

03-19-2010, 03:18 PM
Aww man...I truly hope you do finish on time, but even if you don't you'll still have one outstanding piece of work! Best of luck to you Kris! *crosses fingers*

03-19-2010, 04:28 PM
Looks great, except for the title. It still looks like an afterthought at the moment. The stars name should be bigger and closer to the title I think. I know you don't want to block out any of your great work, but it still needs a bit more importance in the scheme IMHO. Excellent entry, no matter what. :buttrock:

Go man go!!!

Each character is so well made, i love how every part holds up to scrutiny, beautiful!

The name could be scaled up a touch

Amazing work, lets see the final image in all its beauty!!

Thank you so much for your support and your words of encouragement guys! I was able to render most of the stuff in highres and some in a little lower res, but not terrible. I'm waiting for the last pass now before I can put everything together. It's going to be tight but I'm almost certain I'll make it! :wip: :wip: :wip:

03-19-2010, 11:22 PM
Can't wait to see the final! If you need to make it in time I'm sure sacrificing an element or two wont take away from the overall image. Goodluck.

- "The taxman is coming! The taxman is coming!", screams the baby bonobo before he secures his piggy bank really tight...

It's another year and our hero "Bonobo Gordon"; has more work to do, protecting his family from the evil taxman from outer space. Jessica Dollface, his girlfriend realdoll/cyborg is hanging in there, just being pretty and all, but it's our hero who will fight for his baby's school and lunch! Baby bonobo learned with dad at young age that when the man comes, it's time to protect your savings, otherwise after his visit you may end with no money at all!

This is my entry for the B-Movie challenge. I tried to come with an original idea, with a twisted unusual couple and their baby. My main focus was the body/face expression, to help with the storytelling.
Main inspirations were Gil Elvgren, Frank Frazetta and Bonobos in general, who pay or not taxes. I dedicate this work to all of us, hard working Bonobos.

It was a pleasure but I barely made to the deadline. I wish I could do better with some more time but now it's done.

I like to thank everybody for your suggestions to help me to improve this work. A very special thanks goes to my girlfriend Jessica, who supported this whole insanity, allowing me to work crazy nights in order to get this done. I love you Jessi!

Also a big thanks to Luxology for Modo and Pixologic for ZBrush. Nothing that you see here would be possible without those.

Thanks for watching. Good luck everybody!

On a side note, you a Futbol fan? Are you pulling for your country in the World Cup? It's gonna be too cold for your Brazilians. Ha Ha.
