Here is my rough concept for the carnivorous funny looking creatures attacking earth. The costume for the big guy is going to change a bit I have not finalized the idea yet.
The idea for the setting is basically both of them walking down a highway causing chaos and destruction. I want to show the scale of them vs a highway and tiny cars. I want to go for a cartoon or a stylized 3d look.
Once I have more updates on the costume and the image I will upload them.

01 January 2010, 02:52 PM
Right now they look like game-characters designs, but this impression might change when you put them on the highway and add more "action". :)

not saying its bad. just mentioning ^^

01 January 2010, 03:41 PM
Love the designs! They definitely feel small now though. I look forward to seeing them in action.

01 January 2010, 05:21 PM
These are some great looking characters! Very Nice!
Nice idea, sounds cool

01 January 2010, 05:39 PM
cool caracters. this blue one is realy gigantic . i like it. waiting for updates.

01 January 2010, 05:44 PM
Coool!!very promising:)good luck with the rest of the process

01 January 2010, 03:15 PM
Very cool character designs....but I also do agree with some comments stated above. Looking forward for more.

01 January 2010, 03:32 PM
LadyMedusa - I totally agree they do have a video gamish influence to them. I want to steer it more into giants monsters attacking earth theme thru posing, lighting and with the overall concept of the image. thanks for the comment!

csmallfield - thanks a lot....yeah they do seem smaller than they will actually be. When i have the backgroung in place hopefully the scale will make more sense.

MVDB - thanks for the awesome comment. Glad you like the design and concepts

paulius-st - thanks a lot for the comment. I will post more as soon as i have some.

diissar - thanks a lot !

Yongkiat - thanks man

thanks to everyone who has stop by to take a look as well.

01 January 2010, 03:37 PM (

This is the direction I want to take the image in. I also changed the costume for the blue guy a bit, it will probably stay like this maybe with a few tweaks. Also the pose for the yellow guy will be slightly different.

01 January 2010, 04:28 PM
hehe - nice one - I like the character design :)

01 January 2010, 05:48 PM
It's like Doc Oc and Green Goblin! As much as I love this image, and these characters (which is a lot), I don't really see the connection to a B-Movie. It looks like a cool animated movie or bad ass video game to me.

01 January 2010, 06:41 PM
Agree with csmallfiel, it does look more like current CG animated movie... maybe because the sci fi costume looks too modern and the creature too cute. A lot of B movie creatures look like people wearing costume or simply creepy/disgusting, while the sci fi element is low budget, tin can or tin foil looking.
Maybe if you make them distinctively fake/man made?
Just my opinion ^^

01 January 2010, 07:05 PM
csmallfield - wow thanks a lot for the nice comment man. Yeah totally inspired by those dudes, i was picturing them in those earlier 50's comics you know pretty cheesy stuff tipical of b movies, that was what I was thinking. I might have to change the look of his accesories to make it less futuristic... more old looking tech stuff

Pegahoul - great sugesstions thanks a lot, you are totally on point, you have given me a great idea,
I will change the tech stuff to be more old looking not so new, i will get rid of the glowing stuff wich actually kind of makes it look too high tech as well. My plan is to make them fell handmade, more like made out of clay or "fake looking" but I will try and nail those down. I will probably keep the characters and the image and just modify it so it fits a more in that direction.

Thanks for the comments !

01 January 2010, 12:15 AM (

here is the work in progress progress of the hi poly big guy. Still updating the design so it does not feel so modern

01 January 2010, 05:47 AM
The sculpting is very cool. Did you sculpt in T-Pose or posed then sculpt? Very nice.

01 January 2010, 05:56 AM
That model looks great. Little unsure about those fingers though.

01 January 2010, 10:54 AM
impressive quick 3D model! Keep going!

01 January 2010, 12:04 PM
Man I want to see that guy move, he looks awesome, I love his fat fingers, they have a lot of personality.

01 January 2010, 12:27 AM
Yongkiat - hey man thanks. I actually did the posing then the sculpting. First time doing that, I usually prefer to do T pose and then sculpt because of symmetry brushes, but for this contest I wanted to try something new. I will post the zpshere skeleton of the guy

SantoAnderson - thanks a lot, I will keep in mind the fingers, maybe some tweaks

MVDB - thanks for the comment. Hopefully I can work out the whole picture in time

csmallfield - haha.. thanks a lot, great that you like him. I was trying to make something with some personality it's awesome that you think it has some...thanks

01 January 2010, 12:30 AM (

A bit more of the big blue guy.. Added the tentacles ..everything still needs a couple of passes before I move on to the next guy..

01 January 2010, 12:34 AM
haha ... very funny monster. Like. :)

01 January 2010, 12:40 AM
Great! :applause:
Nice monster, lot of personality. I'm also thinking on modeling my characters already posed. That would save a lot of time on rigging. I'll have to think about it... :lightbulb
Keep on!

01 January 2010, 02:10 AM
yep he's pretty sweet :D fast going too :)

01 January 2010, 05:11 AM
I see...I think it's working out quite well doing your way as oppose to T-pose then sculpt.

01 January 2010, 02:08 PM
Marat-Ars - thanks!

Danko - thanks man, yeah it does save time on rigging for sure, but it might add a bit of time sculpting (no symmetry) and also modeling, but on the good side it gives a very fluid and asymmetrical look...

Intervain - thanks a lot.. hopefully I have enough time to finish the whole thing

Yongkiat - thanks man, for the other guy I am going T pose - sculpt and then at the end pose him when he is totally done... his pose is less extreme and I can probably finish it faster if I go t pose..

01 January 2010, 02:11 PM (

here is the zphere construction of the blue guy and the smaller guy now with helmet in b movie style!

01 January 2010, 02:12 PM (

pretty close to done with the sculpt for the blue guy..

01 January 2010, 02:54 PM
Beautiful work!

I've yet to use zpheres for a character but this challenge could be a good reason to give it a try. Do you retain any symmetry working this way or do you just work on the model as a whole?

You should have the whole thing finished next week! :D

01 January 2010, 02:59 PM
I like how you used ZSphere to sculpt...very effective..for both characters.

01 January 2010, 05:08 PM
nice characters! keep it coming!

01 January 2010, 07:19 PM
Yes ! Nice stuff around here !

01 January 2010, 07:22 PM
Very fun character. I like his pose a lot!

01 January 2010, 11:09 PM
Awww, I hate to be such a girl about it, but they're adorable!

01 January 2010, 11:12 PM
I agree with Robin, I was avoiding using the word but...
DAMN! They are cute!! hahaha ;)

01 January 2010, 05:24 AM
Great Stuff Francisco. The latest ocoto guy is great!

01 January 2010, 07:25 PM
Wow  awesome concepting and awesome zbrushing, what more can I say :D

01 January 2010, 07:31 PM

that is very nice. I love something like this stuff.
Good luck for the Challenge.

01 January 2010, 08:16 PM
That blue guy reminded me of Stitch from the disney movie.

I love the character designs and how it's turning out. Can't wait to see more.

01 January 2010, 08:29 PM
Wow killer modeling!!!
It turns out really well in 3D!
If I would have one critique, imo it's almost too cool and not "b-moviish" enough.
But I guess too cool can be good too in certain way :)

01 January 2010, 03:38 PM
AJ - Thanks a lot for the awesome comment man... Zpheres are cool (they do have limitations) but yeah if you pose them you loose the symmetry brushes.. so it has to be all hand sculpted as a whole.. hopefully i have enough time!..thanks again

Yongkiat - thanks man, I am trying to learn more about them as I go.. the are pretty cool and the allow you to do stuff fast but they do have some limitations.. resolution is one them, but so far so good..

dingwang6 thanks glad you like them !

gpepper thanks !

Antropus - thanks glad you like him, I am glad I posed him and then sculpted him.

fourcrowsArt - haha no worries, glad you like them! thanks a lot

Danko - hey no problem as long as you guys like them that's awesome! thanks a lot

BUZZFX- thanks

Paperboy - thanks for the comment, glad you like the concepting and zbrushing.

Vampyrangel - thanks

Aven99 - haha thanks, he does resemble him a bit... I was trying to get some of that appeal of pixars characters.. like sully from monsters inc.. but with some changes to fit the theme and my style..

JRGauthier - thanks.. well I made changes to their outfits to fit more the old chessy tech of b movies or old sci fi shows.... the blue guys tentacles are a nod to the robot from the old "lost in space" tv series, and I added some elements to the smaller guy that will make him more of a classic martian with a ufo... But thanks a lot I am glad you think its cool or to cool!

01 January 2010, 03:40 PM (

here is the martian guy with his UFO. Almost done with his sculpt.

01 January 2010, 07:21 PM
Wow killer modeling again...yep you're getting that retro sci-fi look with that suit!

01 January 2010, 09:01 AM
great work man it's just awsome continue... i hope to see the finish work

01 January 2010, 09:10 AM
Nice. Do you plan to put it in the background ?
He seems a bit in low res...

01 January 2010, 09:23 AM
Cool. I like the evolution your characters took.

Good luck mate.

01 January 2010, 09:37 AM
Just great! Characters and concept are fine!
Good luck to you!

01 January 2010, 09:50 AM
WOW,cool models! Beautiful style!

01 January 2010, 12:20 AM
The movement and feeling of mass in the blue monster sculpt is terrific, and I dig the proportions of your characters. Great work.

01 January 2010, 03:05 PM
Thanks to everyone for stoping by... I am currently doing retopology stuff.. nothing too interesting to show. I am at the more "tedious" techinchal part of the work: retopo and unwrapping, but after that I move onto texturing and other cool stuff.

JRGauthier - wow thanks so much for the nice comments, cool that you think I am hitting more of that b movie sensibility.

hichamdi - thanks a lot for the encouragement, I am trying to nail everything down so I can finish in time!

gpepper - Yeah he will be slightly smaller than the blue guy.. Also in that screen shot he was a bit too sharp.. I will tone that down so he will look proper.. Thanks

RageOfAges - thanks a lot Glad you like them man...

PELENG - thanks a lot

OZ - thank you very much.. Glad you like the style

ravioli_rancher - thanks.. I was trying to get that feeling of weight in the big guy... hopefuly I captured some of that... thanks a lot.

02 February 2010, 01:51 PM (

Here are the 2 guys.. unwrapped with a quick diffuse and normal map.... Also some quick lights in maya to start to preview the scene. From now I will shift between texturing and modeling stuff for the background.

02 February 2010, 04:19 PM
I think what would really sell this image is the cute and cuddliness of the monsters. I like the sculpts but i think you need to push it to be even more cartoony and cute. Bigger eyes, Big heads, small feet, more absurd and awkward. Just a thought.

02 February 2010, 04:20 PM
excellent design , modeling and movment in this characters. really promising.

02 February 2010, 04:53 PM
nice modeling for the characters good luck

02 February 2010, 07:32 PM
I love these characters! Looking great!

02 February 2010, 01:57 AM
I loved this characters!
Very appealing!

I'll be looking for updates \o/

02 February 2010, 08:22 AM
Dude!! those models are SWEET!

02 February 2010, 11:36 AM
Great Models Francisco!

02 February 2010, 12:51 PM
even more beautiful material! keep it up!! ur are doing a great job!

02 February 2010, 02:20 PM (

Here is a closeup of the head.. very rough texture.. still not happy with it want to work more variation into it make it more interesting..

02 February 2010, 02:23 PM (

here is a preview of the scene so far... still need to add all the destruction on the highway and other details...

02 February 2010, 03:59 PM
Very different. I really like the style. :buttrock:

02 February 2010, 04:42 PM
That looks great!
The composition is nice and helps a lot understanding the scales. The head material and colors look very cool too, maybe a bit too dark, but just to say something. To be picky, I miss some more detail on the big boy feet but In general it looks fantastic.
Ánimo campeón!

02 February 2010, 05:17 PM
Oh I love the style on this, great modeling :D

02 February 2010, 06:39 PM
Wow, that's looking sweet!!!

02 February 2010, 08:06 PM
i think this is looking great and really can't wait to see your big guy walking.

something about his jaw seems to have lost some of the original concept arts humor and cuteness. not sure if that was intentional but thought i might mention it :)

keep rollin'

02 February 2010, 09:26 PM
Awesome work overall. I personally like the smaller character, he's got a very ominus feeling, as if he's acting harmless compared to the big guy but he could suddenly zap you (or some buidlings) into a thousand pieces or maybe he controls the big guy and is directing him to destroy everything. I like his design too, with the old school suit and large helmet and gloves, very cool stuff

02 February 2010, 10:38 PM
Wow, nice character design. I really like it. :applause:

02 February 2010, 09:44 PM
Hey Francisco,

Cool concept, really great characters and awesome models ! :D The scene looks good. Perhaps you can try a more wider composition, only a comment :)

Great work so far. Looking forward for more updates. Cheers!!

02 February 2010, 01:30 AM
Renderspud - thanks a lot

laurentino - thanks man. Glad you find them appealing

Buku73 - thanks a lot..

RageOfAges - thanks

OZ - thanks a lot for the comment.. awesome that you like it

webhead- i tried to do go for something cartoony I have been doing a lot semi real stuff lately so i wanted a break from that..thanks

Danko - thanks a lot man, yeah i totally agree with your comments.. I think that my monitor might be a bit too light.. I will try and compensate for the darkness.. And as far as the feet go maybe in the texture I can add some detail to break it up.. Gracias compadre... vamos a ver si lo logro terminar a tiempo

Yrindale - thanks, glad you like the style

Paperboy - thanks

axiomatic - haha thanks man... yeah I can imagine him walking around too.. with those crazy eyes..hehe.. And about the jaw it tends to happen with the transition from 2d to 3d sometimes the design does not translate exactly the same.. i tried to keep it close to the 2d but also go a bit freestyle with it.. thanks for the comment

Emptyshell - hehe. thanks man you totally got what i was going for with the smaller guy, It is awesome that you got all of that just from looking at him.. you nailed it!... i wanted him to be ominous and he is directing the big blue guy telling him what to smash....thanks a lot

Russel-Nash - thanks man

Ferx - thanks man, yeah the final shot.. will be a bit wider.. I cut it off to make the image fit the 150kb size.. and also to zoom in a bit closer to the characters.... thanks !

02 February 2010, 01:34 AM (

here is some more of the texture for the blue guy.. Still need to tweak a lot of it to get it to match up and work well together...time is kind of running out!

02 February 2010, 02:04 AM
really awesome work so far!

02 February 2010, 05:53 AM
Okay you know what? Screw the B-movie theme, this model and the textures just look AWESOME!! Nice work man!!

02 February 2010, 09:30 AM
Awesome monster! He looks like a bigger version of Stitch from "Lilo & Stitch".

02 February 2010, 10:14 AM
This rocks! Don't stop keep on going sir!:applause:

02 February 2010, 05:28 PM
Lovely model and character design! Nice seeing him in the whole big composition, too. Good luck with the rest of that!

02 February 2010, 06:30 PM
Awesome work. He's almost cute in a way. I wish he would attack my city!

02 February 2010, 01:59 PM
ashtonzashes - thanks a lot

LastEmperor7 - haha.. thanks man glad you like the textures on the guy

bloodbathsuck - thanks...someone did mention that but the more I look at him the more he looks like my cat... at least his face, hehe..

Aven99 - thanks a lot.. I am trying my best to hit tthe deadline..

walrus - thanks a lot man.. nice work on you thread and good luck to you as well!.

jonathanclark - haha .. thanks man... I like your wolf/hienna man too..

02 February 2010, 02:05 PM (

Here is a bit more of the textures.. still need to do all of his skin.. give it more variations and stuff..

02 February 2010, 05:12 PM
I've been checking this thread a lot, so its finally time to at least say hello and compliment u on a truly awesome main character :) Will need to go thru and read the story behind it, before I start giving some constructive comments, but for now I am just signing in and will enjoy the ride :) Keep up the good work and best of luck!

02 February 2010, 06:33 PM
nice character you got here. especialy the face looks very emotive. technicaly also very well made. but to be completely honest, to me it seems quite off topic. i would never quess that its a B-movie entry. it looks like a very solid cartoon or a videogame character, doesnt look very b-moviesh to me.

but i honestly wish you luck with your entry.

02 February 2010, 09:16 PM
Very charismatic characters you got here! I love the renders and you did a great job on the textures so far.
Can't wait to see more!

02 February 2010, 11:34 AM
textures are coming along beautifully, great progress

02 February 2010, 07:21 PM
This is what it's all about right here, Fransisco. Nice work.

02 February 2010, 10:31 AM
Great job on texturing !
Is it me or he seems a bit in low res around the ears ? Did you take a low res mesh and put to it a normal map ?

02 February 2010, 11:44 PM
Hey Francisco,

Cool textures :D Like a lot the blue skin for your character, and the metallic arms look great!!

Fantastic work :D looking forward for more updates. Cheers!!

02 February 2010, 10:55 AM

very good char design :)

02 February 2010, 01:14 AM (

here are some more of the textures for both characters.. they are almost there just need to fix things on the red guy.. his helmet and other materials..been a bit slow lately.. I have to work on the bg as well

02 February 2010, 12:22 PM
The characters are awesome Francisco!, I can't wait to see the bg =]

03 March 2010, 01:47 AM (

I took a long break but I think I managed to find some time to try and finish the contest.. Did some work on it today... here is a preview of the scene so far..I will keep updating as I go...

03 March 2010, 09:23 PM (

here is more of the scene.. Threw in some quick textures for the bg and started the lighting as well

03 March 2010, 03:31 PM (

here is a closeup of the 2 guys... I also added the ambient oclussion.. tweaked textures and ligthing.. Still more details to come

03 March 2010, 03:32 PM (

And here is the scene so far...

03 March 2010, 03:38 PM
That's looking good, I especially like the little guy on the UFO. The diffuse lighting is a nice touch too. My only crit at this stage is that it looks too high budget for a B-movie - maybe make the ground look like it's an obvious small-scale model, with distance blur on near and / or distant objects. Nice so far anyway.

03 March 2010, 04:06 PM
That's looking really strong, man! If you don't mind me asking, what program did you use to add the colors, is it polypainting in Z-Brush?

03 March 2010, 05:13 PM
BaronImpossible- thanks a lot man... glad you like the little guy.. people seem to like him as well... as far as the look I have notice that comment before..I will try and use depth of field to showcase the enviroment as something sort of like a miniature.. thanks! good luck to you as well

PaulRMcD - thanks a lot Paul..I dont mind you asking me man.. I unwraped the characters and background and I used mostly photoshop for texturing.. I did use projection master in zbrush to layout a very rough colour guide but the bulk of the texturing was done in photshop... good luck with your entry too.. it was looking awesome last time I checked

03 March 2010, 05:53 PM
hello there, this is looking very cool..really love all the work so far, with some post fx will rock mate!!... :arteest: :arteest: :arteest:

03 March 2010, 06:14 PM
Hey Francisco,

That is great!! Love that two guys, great textures on both and awesome details. Like a lot the background and the destroyed highway.

Think you can overlap a bit the little alien and the giant to has a reference on size and position of both on your last composition. ( in this image is not clear if the alien is flying over the robotic arm , or in front, or back ) and maybe you can put the alien in a more "surfing pose" (or if you want the "dominant" look, maybe with the arms cross)

Awesome work !! and waiting for more :D Cheers!!

03 March 2010, 01:24 AM
Man, your characters simply rock!!! :bounce: especially the blue one. They are so cool I´d love to have small toys of them on my desk :p. Definitely yours and the baby lagoon creature of Bob Wallace are by far my favorites.

Good luck.

03 March 2010, 04:21 AM (

here is a bit more of the bg almost done. just need some tweaks and the tittle for the image...

03 March 2010, 04:22 AM
here is a closeup of the image...

03 March 2010, 04:24 AM (

03 March 2010, 04:34 AM
rattlesnake - thanks a lot man.. i added some post fx now... hope you like them !.. thanks

Ferx-thanks a lot man...i tried to put some work on textures glad you noticed... as far as the sugestions.. thanks a lot i will see what I can do..but I might be limited by time..
good luck with your entry too!..awesome to see that you choose that image with mayan temple!

Aztan- wow thanks for the awesome comment..I would like a little statue of them as well.. it would be cool... THanks for the encouragemet.... I also liked Bob Wallace's entry..

03 March 2010, 05:58 AM
Hey Francisco,

........ woooow.... love it!! :D That car is a blast !! hahahaha Awesome textures and atmosphere.

Fantastic work! Cheers!!

03 March 2010, 02:01 PM
hey looks very nice, love the blast area like Ferx said  are you going to add some depth of field ? :arteest:

03 March 2010, 02:06 PM
It looks fantastic!

03 March 2010, 03:18 PM
Looks grate mate, the metal parts are just superb! Keep up the good work!

03 March 2010, 03:31 PM
Looking really good. Maybe some more reflected light on the underside of his belly and legs, though, as it's a bit dark.

03 March 2010, 10:04 PM (

Software: 3ds max,Maya,mental ray,Photoshop,ZBrush

We all ignored the warning signs and now the carnivorous funny looking creatures come to take over earth!

03 March 2010, 10:07 PM
BaronImpossible - hey man thanks.. I tried to light him up a bit..just uploaded the final.. hopefully its not too dark.. thanks for the support man.

Ppzek- thanks a lot.. I am happy the way the metal turned out as well.. thanks for the comments.

whitemagus - thanks

rattlesnake - thanks man.. I just added some more depth of field.. hopefully is not too much.. i did not want to blur out all the detail.. I tried to find a balance.. thanks for the comments man..

Ferx- thanks man.. dont quit man.. you have a good piece as well keep going. thanks a lot for all the support. glad you like the image..

Thanks to everyone who stoped by to take a look during the contest.. all the comments helped me out shape and refine the image.. thanks a lot and good luck to everyone.

03 March 2010, 05:44 PM
Cool dynamic due in here. The rendering on the big guy looks super nice.

Yep, that's great. I really like this, it has a good feeling about it. The title is neat, too, simple yet unique and effective. Good luck!

Nice job :) Your characters design is really cool. I like texturing and rendering too. It's a little bit a pitty, that invaders aren't destroing something more spectacular, giant buildings or sth, but still i love it. Congratulations :)

Great job Francisco !
It is my favourite !

Maybe more environment elements would have been cool. Planes in the air, more cars, panels near the road, gaz station, etc.

I wish you the best mate !
