Good Luck with this one - I know how you must have felt just missing the deadline on the last challenge, I did the same thing with Steampunk. It was a shame because your entry was looking very nice. Fingers crossed we can both finish this one on time!

Here is script i have written.
My english is week so im sorry for mistakes and probably all form of it.
I attached also polish version for polish colleagues ;)

Version EN

In times of 1974, in Poland Slask , many coal mines was shut down. Goverment system covered real truth , why they closed them. It was mistery until now. Here is version of events by few miners who was recognize as insane because this story seems to be unbelievable.

Blood mine.

500 meters under ground , screem filled out mine tunels. After removed huge piece of rock miners saw something different than coal wall wich they expected. They saw something more terryfing than worst nightmare. Huge flesh body, big as house, slippery and alfful like not any man or any animal. This thing was looked like viscera with consumed dead bodys. It was full of blisters, vains, teeth, tendons and big eyes. Miners could not belive what they saw. Worst was , this thing was alive and wanted to make contact with them. Miners like hipnotized, in beginning they wanted to run but curiosity won. It was big mistake, because they duty was for twenty four hours that day, and they families wasnt expect them too soon.

Next day early everything seemed to be normal. Coal mine from far was looking abandoned like always, only moving coal conveyors and coal dust was a sign that work is going in full steam. The previous day happening did change something. In exchange of coal , blood was comming from conveyor. Huge fontain of blood, wich looked like newly discovered oil well on wild west. Under main conveyor ,blood rain, where miners screamed like mad. They wasnt themseves anymore. Mutated miners, completely covered by blisters and worst, was eating each other and seemed to be happy for. Nobody knew what was next. That was last picture remembered by the peaople who told me this storry. We can have only hope that this terrible thing was destoyed for ever .

Version PL

Pełne bąbli, żył , zębów, oczu i scięgien.

To ostatni obraz jaki zapamietali Ci , kórzy przekazali mi tę historię . Nikt nie wie co było potem. Miejmy nadzieje ze to coś zostało zniszczone na zawsze.

Nice start, great story, pretty deep, :)

i like the concepts as well :)

good luck mate

Nice drawings. It seems like there is a big opportunity with the crazy miners emerging out of the tunnel: that whole lights at the end of the tunnel thing. Keep up the good work!

Storyboards look wiiiicked! Fun concept too... :D

01-25-2010, 07:22 AM
Awesome ... I am sure you're provide us with a suitably gory monster too :)

If you need help fixing up the english script just shout out as I'd be happy to edit it for you.

01-25-2010, 01:20 PM

axiomatic - Would be great if you could help me with script edit. I wasnt sure this script is even undertandable:) . I will put your name in special thanks if i will finish this trailer :).

Its storyboard with some details just see well what happening and to get general feeling of story atmosphere. Its not concept much. Im going to skip sketching concept part. In zbrush i can play around as well and get some final look and meshes - to save time wich i dont have much.

01-26-2010, 06:41 PM
Marek I've read your story and to me it seems like its a story before story. Like they do in a movies, for example in lucas starwars before they show you the image text goes in where they explain how does this universe work and who is who.
If I may suggest that you put 2 characters in bathing suits (looking like this may be - http://michaelmay.us/09blog/01/0131_alientrespass_0poster.jpg) that will end up in this mine and then the story will roll up. This will be much more fun and 50s B movie sort of thing.

In any case your story is the best horror idea I've seen here soo far - soo good luck!

01-27-2010, 01:04 AM
Good luck Starszek! Can't wait to see more...

So I fixed up the english bits for you and they're below. Tried to use as much of your own words as possible but sometimes I thought it was easier to change it a bit. It was fun, hehe :)

In 1974, Poland, coal mines were shut down through out the region of Slask. No reason for the closures was given by the Government and this remained a mystery, until now.

The following account was recorded by some of the few surviving miners of that time, each one certified as insane by the government who denies their version of events.

You might change Slask for Silesia since that seems to be the usual western word for that region.

script thingo
500 meters under ground lie the scream filled mine tunnels. After the removal of a huge piece of granite miners revealed something vastly different than the coal deposit they expected and more terrifying then their worst nightmares. A huge fleshy body, as large as a house, slick and terrifying, it resembled no man or animal. It’s long intestinal body looked to be filed with the bodies of the dead. It was a seething mass of blisters, veins, teeth, tendons and huge eyes. The miners could not believe the sight before their eyes and yet the worst was still to come as the beast wished to make contact with them. Hypnotised in the beginning, the miners willed themselves to run but their curiosity won out. A big mistake as their shift had begun early and their families were not expecting them until the next day.

At dawn, everything seemed to be normal. From a distance the coal mine appeared to be fully operational, the conveyors moving and coal dust pounding from the machines. Yet the events of the previous day had left their mark for, instead of coal, the conveyor was transporting blood. Huge fountains of blood, like a newly discovered oil well in a scene from the wild west. Under the main conveyor blood rained down on the miners who screamed in their madness. The miners were changed, mutated, completely covered by blisters and worst of all they gorged on the flesh of their friends. Of the remaining events there is little record as this is the last scene recalled by the survivors. We can only hope that this terrible thing was destroyed forever.

01-30-2010, 11:29 PM
I like the updated model. You choose right direction with cloths although this won't be easy to rig. Do you want to use cloth sim or normal maps?

01-31-2010, 12:31 AM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/27/19028/19028_1264897899_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/27/19028/19028_1264897899_medium.jpg)

Software: 3ds max

Basic rigging. Simple animation on Bip Footsteps and layers done realy fast . Models are medium and low poly with skin modifer ( models are imported from zbrush). For cloth objects i added turbosmooth with displace mesh ( above skin)and mesh select and flex modifer. For better look on human body is added turbosmooth and displace too, just for this test. Displace textures was generated after sclupting those models in zbrush. This rigg still is rought and flex esspetially is very seen. However i will use those characters probably only in medium and far range shots with moving camera so maybe there will be no need to work more on this. Will see after animatic :)

01-31-2010, 01:09 AM
thanks all,

fgdf - in general i did low poly to get all work faster. Starting from doing uvw, export to zbrush and rigg. Cloth modifer or any plugin need so much time to set up right.. so i decided to do it quicker. those characters probably will not be zoomed ect.. so i hope i wont have to back to those riggs :)

01-31-2010, 02:45 AM
Nice storyboard sketches! I've heard of mines where they hear strange noises so this one really creeps me out. Best of luck in the challenge! :)

01-31-2010, 12:51 PM
The animation that is on his hips makes the walk look a little feminine. Even for mid to far characters you'll definitely want to do something with the secondary animation of the objects on him---like the things hanging from his belt.

Good luck!

01-31-2010, 04:07 PM
harmless - Thanks. Yes animation is very rough for now. Its test of rigging more than animation. Objects on belt are rigged for secondary animations. Im going to model, uvw, rigg characters first, later animatic and then i will put effort for animation,(wich is not my strongest side) then will start hard times :).

01-31-2010, 04:22 PM
Looking forward to the animatics. Keep up the good work.

Just quick test of bubbels on character. Its blend of two displace maps with noise mask for now. I have some cool ideas how this is going to work in final. But its not work for now. I started mutants riggs and testing displace maps from zbrush. This render is total test - just wanted to show it bit better than preview ;)

thanks all,

JurajMolcak - i hope this mutants, organics wall and this situation will fit in subject. Designs are different than typical stuff but its horror story so i decided to 'fly' with ideas. Also there will be some traditional horror stuff like limbs... lot of blood ect.

02-06-2010, 11:15 AM
I think you´re right. Planet Terror by RRodriguez is good example of B-grade tribute with recent vfx quality. Good luck!

02-06-2010, 02:32 PM
How are you animating the bubbles exactly, i'd love to know, u have a certain layer in ur diplacement which is animated or......?

02-06-2010, 03:17 PM
hey Bingu

Its in max so some is called different than in maya. I have two displace maps one with bubbles pinch out and other pinch in. Im making mix ( blend ) of them using Mask (procedural Noise). This noise mask is animated proceduraly (animated state of noise). You can also use painted simple texture with for example animated offset.

For now im left this what i have now. Its simpel and easy to change. I will be sure when i will do the animatics.

02-06-2010, 03:31 PM
May be this will give some ideas to play around with displacement maps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WElCFnsCXUk :)

although I was wondering, Staszek will you animate miners mutation? I can imagine mesh blends but nothing that detailed as your models.

02-07-2010, 12:35 PM
Hi Staszek I haven't been here for a while and what I see is a great progress!
You've achieved the "B-effect" for this characters ... Great job! No crit

02-08-2010, 10:12 AM

digi_est - yes i was thinking about showing mutation. Im keeping it as wish list shot(s).
I will use displace, morphing many times esspetially for this huge thing what miners found

02-09-2010, 08:15 PM

this is animation test, i did more for this shot but i rendered only this piece . This is test render not final in anyway, no background, no textures exept displace maps and test diffuse on mutant skin. Secondary aniamtion is not done too and small things to fix like cloth interupting with body.

Hey Staszek, animation is looking good, lovin the camera moves! :D It would look awesome if, at the very end, when he opens his mouth, he bends and leans into camera a little more. :) looking forward to more submits! Thumbs up!

02-21-2010, 04:57 PM
that is a serious monster right there!
looks cool so far.

02-21-2010, 07:08 PM
Feels like I've been waiting for ages for the latest update (because it's awesome) and boy have I not been disappointed!

This is class A for sure.

02-22-2010, 12:44 PM
Bingu,opentarget,astitchintime - thanks,

Bingu - camera its not final yet, this test is pice from middle of animation - this shot probably will take even 11 second ( for now i have some of that animated ). The move wich mutant is about do, in the end , is another attac on camera :) ,dont want to do zoom in and out very fast because it could be much chaotic for viewer. I will show in next week all this shot animations ( hope)

02-22-2010, 05:10 PM
Hey stazek,
If thats what your goin for, its going to look insane! :D cant wait to see the finished animation....anyway i have to get back to work...lol..im currently putting the props into our scenes, its taking forever :(.

Man, this is looking awesome so far. Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see it finished.

02-22-2010, 09:02 PM
Nice animation.

02-22-2010, 11:02 PM
I like it.
The camera needs a little smoothing.
It would be cool to have a "kill bill" style plume of blood explode upwards when he pulls his axe out of the body.
The character reminds me of Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean, for better or worse. That makes me expect to see crazy subsurface scattering on the tentacles.
You definitely need some vomit or goo coming out of his mouth at the end!

Keep it up!

02-23-2010, 12:50 AM
Looks great! I hope it will turn out very violent! ;)

02-23-2010, 03:01 PM
AdrianLazar,harmless,pauloduarte,Richard3d,Bingu - thanks,

harmless - thanks for good advices , yeah for sure i will add fointain of blood comming out when mutant is pull of axe :)
-subsurface will be too slow , im thinking about tweaking this by selfillumination pass.. will see at rednering stage
-something in mouth would look awsome too i will try it!

02-23-2010, 10:09 PM

02-24-2010, 12:11 AM
This is very good. I must disagree with harmless, about the camera movement. I think that this kind of animation is what makes B-MOVIE. Really realistic movement.

One thing that catch my glance is the second lifting of the axe, or whatever that sharp thing is. It seams like its suddenly too light, and it can lift it with only one hand.

When it opens its mouth theres got to be some blood spilled on the camera. I think that will be good effect.

Cant wait to see this rendered with full effects.

Overall stunning character, animation, camera and film look... keep up

02-24-2010, 11:17 PM
Nice visuals! were you inspired by 'Halo's' 'The Flood' creatures? and 'The Thing'?

02-25-2010, 01:55 AM
Very nice work. The bubbles are really cool! I know you said that SSS would be too slow for this project but if you don't go HD maybe you could get it in there? I think that will really make the bubble idea POP!

Great work though!!! Good luck!

02-25-2010, 11:00 AM
nice animation dude, nice

02-27-2010, 12:15 AM

Cool concept and great execution!

Most of trailer will be underground, with dark atmosphere - so i figure day light will add some variety to make all more interesting.

i started to like BW version. I was thinking about it from beginning of this idea.

What do you think ? is it better ?

c&c are welcome,

03-19-2010, 12:52 AM
Hi Staszek, I think you could use a little chroma wrap. :) and you should definitely go with the color, because you will loose in details very much if you'll go with the grayscale.
Probably I'd desaturate colors a little and add grain.

And there is one problem with your renders - characters look wet overall as if they were made of plastic. May be some parts of the body you could really gloss the reflections or kill them at all(hands).

but in general your work is great, hope there's a good story behind it :)
yes and love the realflow stuff !

03-19-2010, 05:43 AM
wow, i prefer the bw, good idea.

03-19-2010, 06:24 AM
Love the black and white... but you subsequently lose red... and your movie is "Blood Mine". Blood loses it's impact without color. So i dont know

03-19-2010, 09:28 AM
Go with colors, u really loose blood as subject in B&W. Keep pushing it's looks great !

03-19-2010, 09:45 AM
Grrreat Going mate! Really can't wait for final video.
IMO colored version really looks good. Good Luck.

03-19-2010, 03:29 PM
Love the black and white... but you subsequently lose red... and your movie is "Blood Mine". Blood loses it's impact without color. So i dont know

Tell that to Alfred Hitchcock:)

You could go B&W and give the blood some subtle color if you feel you need too. I personally like the B&W version, nice work!!!

03-19-2010, 05:32 PM
i would prefer a color version , the b&w looks cool, but imho its not the best way to go with this particular project , imho color + grading, and film grain in post could do all the magic for you and sell the atmosphere better than a b&w

03-20-2010, 08:24 PM
thanks all,

im waiting untill some frames will render , then im going to do fist composite work and will show you soon how it looks in colours and BW.

digiboxoffice - about reflections. Im going to try out in composition other relfection intesity. I will try to figure more realistic look of them . In general i wish to keep mutants looks wet, dribble , slippery to make them more grose :)

03-20-2010, 08:31 PM

Wip ,bus on what im working , im rendering with matt material on ground and with motion blure - camera in this shot makes dynamic moves and this fast done object will fit in. I will use this bus in openig shot too.

Very nice entry man. The amount of job you've done is quite impressive. Are you working alone? Are you full time on this project?
Anyway the quality of the job presented is very nice I'm waiting to see the final movie!

03-21-2010, 01:41 PM
thanks all,

JM-B - yes im indyvidual entry. I wish full time ... Im trying to find free time as much i can, to work on this movie. Since i did most difficult stuff like charcters , rigging, blood simulations, all seams to be going very well. Making objects for bacground should go easy , keep objects low poly, positioned to look best for shot. I hope i will finish

soon im going to show longer shot - i will show then some breakdowns how its made.

70's fiat`125 for background rednering pass (with shadow matt)

03-22-2010, 09:08 AM
That is quite a lot of progress!

Somehow the bubbly miner doesn't seem scary, theatening, or gross to me. Maybe it is the eyes being too clean, or he isn't goopy enough. He reminds me a lot of pizza the hut from spaceballs.

If you wish to shock the viewer more you should think coming in closer with the camera and/or having a stronger reveal...maybe it quickly moves under a downward spotlight, the camera pushes in really fast and goos spills out of his mouth. Right now the flashlight shining on him seems very casual, as if the owner is simply searching for a lost puppy in the dark. The bubbly miner even breaks eye contact with the camera. Better might be that the miner isn't making eye contact, or even facing the light, then it suddenly snaps to looks at the camera (I am sure there is something like that in the Thiller music video). Then if he did something more threatening like move forward, or even start to raise his arms quickly rather than simply turning on a light.

I guess it all depends on what you are going for. Good luck to you!

03-22-2010, 02:07 PM
hey Jim,

thanks for c&c . This shot with turning light on came spontaneously . I wanted to put not too much work in it since i have more important shots to do. Way was to make this additional shot very quickly and it was easiest thing i thought then :) animate it fast and redner fast.

I wanted to put a bit sense of humor :). Show low inteligence mutant and working bubbels on him. I have this guy in violence poses in other shot (out side) where he is very angry.
Im not planning going closer with camera on them - its too much trouble thing in such short time i guess - but for sure it would look cool!

Good point with eyes , for now i have almost all rednered for shots with him - i will find time later to redner extra pass for eyes .

03-22-2010, 04:32 PM
this is really coming along well.

I like the texturing and shading the most. Very crisp and detaily.

i think it is hard to make something scary in black and white, it takes alot of effort to enhance the speculars and to really use blackness in another fashion than one would normally do when doing something in technicolor.
So I think I'd prefer the colored version more, since it has the redness, the SSS (which by the way almost desappears in B'n'W - might as well just turn it off, and get a super fast rendertimes), the specular dots gives something nasty to the whole look.

the simulation works well, and the look is great.

uh and for the eyes, it always looks cool to give zombies eyes like a cow, cus they are so scary and weird. try it!

hows the animation coming along?

03-22-2010, 06:30 PM
andreasng - thanks, about BW - its only idea - for now im making all full color. But i like very much BW look - it makes it more B - like old horror -also it makes all more real.
Im rendering with couple channels ( reflection , shadow ect..) and if i wish use BW version for sure some of tweaking will be needed in composition.

About this noise. Its a matter of low rednering quality. In first i wanted this shot more dark, but later i liked more bright, i did it by exposure control - then this noise commend out. I will try to fix it in PS - background should be bit blured anyway - so i hope blur will help if not then i will rerender background. Also i was thinking to add some patricles in to air - to make feeling of air density ( dust, volume, ect).

About eyes , i agree, i will do some tryouts with them later

Animation, hardest shot is almost rednered , i will post it soon. Rest of animations are not done at all, so i hope i will find free soon time and make them asap. time is running so fast...

03-23-2010, 05:44 AM

I guess they won't be eating muffins after work :)
Amazing work, everything floodind with liquids. gore action.

Broken glass effect is cool, did you render it in 3d or this is a texture?

and again great work!

03-28-2010, 06:18 PM

broken glass is done from photo from cgtextures. I edited it a bit in PS ,also i did alpha for after effects, 3 transparent layers of transformed rendered animation on overlay, multiply, and screen(to feake moving reflection on this glass). But im not very happy from result, wondering about doing simple 3d for it. But for now im working on open shot. Hope later will find some time for it.

03-28-2010, 08:39 PM

03-29-2010, 05:13 AM
Awesome work !

03-29-2010, 10:33 AM
It's cool!
The animation, environment, and characters look great!

The effects need a little love. The spray from the guy at the end looks like sharp pieces of glass rather than a fluid. The stuff coming out of the tower in the back looks like grey faceted baseballs. The camera blood splatter has a directional bottom-left to top-right yet the guy falls from top-left to bottom-right...try rotating those camera splats to match the guys falling direction. The stuff in the guys mouth looks like falling raisins. I think you'd only need a few goo icicle like things that swing around with a single joint, or a softbody. Maybe think about some simple sprite particles for a blood mist.

Nice work!

03-29-2010, 12:18 PM
wow.... cant wait to see the whole thing :)..... goodluck!!!

03-29-2010, 01:04 PM
thanks all,

amir jahanlou - ... yeah, :) i borrowed computer from my friend - now i can redner, do simulation procesings ect... while work.

harmless - thanks for comments, i agree with all, i dont know how much of those stuff i will correct.
Im going to show BW version where all those stuff seams to be covered then - but im missing other things as well .. realy cant deside about colors... BW way i could finish bit easier all thing.

I had to do some for other shots and main subject is human miners and creature wall underground :)
This week i will be busy so it will be hard with good progress on contest.

Im going to show some test editing with other shots ( open-not ready but almost :) , mutant underground, tower with blood, this fight outside, and one extra shot i did in no time - fast comming out from tower tunel ) in BW version until they will not look cool in color :)

Did you use fume or particular for the dust?!

Composite is superb! I can imagine the whole thing will be great.

Have to finish my textures then maybe make competition to you :)

Good luck.

03-29-2010, 01:42 PM
thanks :) yeah, i saw your profile studio and great things there so im sure u will!

smoke after cars is fume, rest is max's envirnoment volume fog in sphere gizmos (sky ,ground)

thanks :) yeah, i saw your profile studio and great things there so im sure u will!

smoke after cars is fume, rest is max's envirnoment volume fog in sphere gizmos (sky ,ground)

Thank you for kind words.
And I know that in Poland there is lots of great artist(jugging by deviantart and cgtalk), beautiful women(deviantart again) and Platige who works with the Mill and got lots of highend shooting equipment. So here in Estonia we look a little foggy :)

Sorry for the off top.

Again great to compete with such artist like yourself!
..and bring the color back :)

03-29-2010, 02:18 PM
so now im quite sure the color version is the way to go...main reason is that the scene is a mine , and the blood blasting out of the oiltower looks pretty dark and black , pretty much like a regular oil blast out of the oil tower, also the splatter on the camera, it could be blood , it could be oil or even a mud , the feeling of gore isnt so apparent. imho a creepy color grade would work much much better.

03-29-2010, 02:44 PM
mann u never fail to impress, your work is spectacular, thats great stuff for a one man entry, brilliant, BRAVO :applause:

The black and white is okay. I like the color better. Consider much stronger lens effect in all of your shots. The dust in the opening shot has way too large of a scale. It makes the cars look like they should be toys. The motion of the effect looks good though.

Looks promising. Can't wait to see the other stuff.

03-29-2010, 10:53 PM
Maybe think about some simple sprite particles for a blood mist.

I agree with harmless, particles might be easier to handle and lead to better fluids than fluids.

The black and white is okay.

Black and white is always okay. At the beginning you did a B-Movie, then a Gore Movie, now i see a Film Noir.;) I love Film Noir.;)
Don't give up colors!

03-30-2010, 08:09 AM
Awsome, everything looks top

BUT i don't get the feeling of a B-movie. This , to me, feels like a slasher , a really good one:)

Personally , i think you let yourself go to much , past a B-movie

03-30-2010, 09:05 AM
Such a horror and ugly there is everything :) Dude this is so cool :) but not B

03-30-2010, 12:04 PM
Wow, such amazing work done here.. everything is good ! (and cool)
and.. you're doing it alone ? this is just crazy !

I realy hope to see it completly finshed and no bad surprise with the dead line.

03-30-2010, 12:13 PM
thanks all :)

I have to find way to make it more B.Its harder than i expect. For sure in composition i can tweak a lot, to not rerender all , or worst reanimate or resimulate and rerender:). I thouhgt about painting over few frames ( things like more streached blood ect..)

I will do few calm shots (mine elevator with miners going down, tunnels ,miners who found flesh-wall ),it should calm all trailer and show better what is going on :)

this week i have very busy so it will be hard to find time.. . Goal is max.4 shots to do . They will be underground , it will be easier to do all area. I started some of it for shot where mutant turn light on. Human miners models and riggs i did eilier so maybe its chance to finish well :)

03-30-2010, 02:34 PM

Maybe you could try a few shading/textures tests. It doesnt mean that you would need to rerender your whole scene..etc...With masking, virtual tracking, layers and passes you could get a few nice different renders that you might then overlap, blend or merge with your others previous renders.
With dynamic masking too, you might for instance reveal some cool textures merged to your frames already rendered.

03-31-2010, 06:58 AM
Hey man your scenes look great, but I agree with kybel and think you need to bring back the color. There are points that are lost in the movie such as the blood in the tower looks like oil now. You say you need to make the movie feel more "B" like, but a B-movie could be anything that looks low budget and cheesy recent or old. Making it black and white doesn't really achieve that effect. I think you got the cheesiness down with the excessive blood and ridiculous looking monsters. It may not look low budget, but there is something to be desired from the artist in us that wants to make things look cool, so with this competition that is what we are fighting. Do we make things look cool and real, or do we purposely make them look fake?

I think you are doing an excellent job with that coolness factor, the over the top violence and gore that is seen in B horror movies.

Keep up the good work and keep the color in it!

Also, well I was watching that latest cut, there was something in me that desired to see a close up of that mutant at the end of the battle scene. His face looked hilarious!

03-31-2010, 11:24 AM
Thanks you all for kind words and helpfull coments. I will keep color version.

ChristopheFauconneau - Thanks, I will try this things too .

Lot to do :) I have idea for one shot wich shlould help me to get all trailer better. :wip:

03-31-2010, 02:59 PM
This just keeps on getting more amazing. Great work and I'm looking forward to seeing even more awesomeness. :buttrock:

I hope you will finish your trailer, it's looking so nice :)

keep going !

Still WIP. Im working on textures and shaders for human miner. For close up shot there is still missing small pattern textures for cloth and skin, and eyelashes. Mine axe also need more work.

04-05-2010, 11:28 AM
I was away for a while..but came back to see more awesomness!!

04-05-2010, 05:25 PM
Good progress. Looks more like camouflage than coal dust. Wouldn't there be places where it mixed with sweat and streak, and places where it simply smudged/smeared?

If it is all shader based you might be able to get away with it if the frequency is smaller (so the pattern is larger).

04-05-2010, 06:27 PM
hey thanks, :)

harmless - your right about camouflage look. Real miners are totaly black with just white eyeballs :). I wanted to make this a bit less dirty :) ( to see a bit character look) . I did very simple texture mask and i hoped that will be enouth :) but you have right again - resolution is smaller ( i have to say - i didnt expect that any one notice this :) - im going to fix it :) ) . I will add sweat, smuged elements to meke it more natural. Thanks
- ah and one more thing :) i did simulate again smoke after bus for first open shot ( with smaller voxel size ) - soon i will show progress on this shot ( still rednering)

04-06-2010, 10:56 AM
congratulations man again. For telling you the truth i dont find the coal dust as camouflage.
I understand that you want to show more the details of the characters but as i see to your previous videos you use very rapid movements and a lot of 3d motion blur so details just like that
i m not sure if we can see it.I love a lot your work and you have to focus more to your story that
is very good.Excellent work again and believe me i dont notice at all that the resolution is smaller.

04-06-2010, 07:29 PM
thanks, drako3d im glad you like it. Since then i corrected a bit this coal dirt on miner. Not much but most for close up shot corrections will be seen.

While working alone on this entry sometimes its hard to see, is something cool or not. Thats why im keep in mind members critics. Of course im not doing everyone wish come true :) but im trying do my best. Lot to do ... time is running...like you sad , for sure i will try to finish all movie first then working on one shot. Hardest things i think are behind me and i have to say im bit tired :) of all of those miners and mutants hehehe and i hate creazy 24h day sound of computers in my kitchen :)

04-06-2010, 07:57 PM
Wow! That's just awesome!
The last wip video is so full of realism and dynamic! And monsters are very interesting!

Good luck to you, Staszek!

3 firsts shots. Still im not sure about overall colors. Tunel shot needs more work. I probably will need to rerender it ... camera should go a bit faster i guess.Let me know what you think. Also some of smoke and water drops from pipes could add better atmosphere. In weekend im planning to finish shots with discovering flesh monster and i hope some time will left for tunel shot.

sorry :) i just found that i did huge mistake with this tunel shot... all im rendering in 25 frames per second.. but this tunel shot i did in 30.. thats why in composition with 25 frames and this shot looks bad.
I was doing it in night and was tired.. thats why i did this mistake , sorry again. In weekend i will do corrected version.

04-08-2010, 12:12 PM
LOOKS AWESOME! Keep the color version, maybe more desaturation but just this is it.
Best to you man! Very nice work!

04-08-2010, 02:49 PM
Looking good. First shot seem to dark. Saturation is good if you want to keep it this way through whole movie. But play with exposure and maybe some film grain/noise effects.

04-08-2010, 03:38 PM
Staszek (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=110695) your work is the best. When you finished this CGChallenge you have to make a
I prefer the film colored with a bit of desaturated. My best wishes and remember its not the destination that counts but the voyage...

hi, Staszek as I see it there is no problem with frame rates. if you think there is such, I'd probably retime it in AE and make more shots in max instead:) I recall that you had this organic wall of horror - I'd rather see that then 30fps to 25 :)
to me it's quite perfect - good work! Make an audio and lets call it a winners entry! :)

04-08-2010, 04:51 PM
hi, Staszek ..... :)
That was my comment sorry, Heiki was out and I used his PC while my own was baking textures.
human error :)

04-08-2010, 05:14 PM
thanks all,

this tunel shot was render abut 3h.. no GI, no characters..all rendered at once.. so for sure im going to rerender it with proper frame duration :). If i wouldnt probably i could not sleep :) hehehe
this 'frame' move bother me too much.

Im going to try out other colours for those 3 shots ( after all shot will be rendered:) ) and if it will not help i will tone down saturation like you all sugested , thanks!

04-09-2010, 07:22 AM
Nice sky and lighting.

04-09-2010, 11:17 AM
Nice work.

For what it is worth, here is my 2 cents:

First shot--oil in tower is distracting, consider removing. smoke from towers has weird shape, doesn't follow movement of sky...considering painting something and warping in post for movement, something that trails into the sky off the left or right side of the screen

Second shot -- nice. reminds me of silent hill

Third shot -- needs dust in air, flickering light or jet of steam...something small to break up the long shot.

I like the high level of quality throughout.

04-10-2010, 10:51 AM
Hey harmless

First shot - its not oli in tower - it coal and coal dust~smoke :) . This smoke is done in after effects so its chance i can fix it quickly.

Smoke from chimney towers. Its much more complicated than i expect.. im not fx specialist.. and i have to say its very difficult for me to make it right . First i had big problems with right speed of it. When i was play with timescale , speed was better but then i started to loose detials ( it was looking like blured). There is wind , thats why this smoke is going a bit to side. But when i did stronger wind then smoke behaved exacly the same but faster, and again when i was trying to slow it down by time scale it was loosing details... I was trying to add few winds with turbulences ect.. nothing helped.. when some part was looking better then other behaved very bad .. and vice versa with other settings.. And every test with even medium detail took a lot of time.. Maybe if some time will left i will try do another somulation for only upper part of this smoke and will try blend it with what i have now.

Shape i will leave as it is, true its wierd but i like it :) I had hidden plan :) - ok i will tell you , i was thinking about last shot where flesh creature will stand up from underground to out side of mine and this creature will be very similar shape :) - that way all will connect as a puzzel :). Similar shot to opent shot but everything is destroyed and huge moster in exchange of somke from chimneys.

third shot - exacly , there missing some cool fx. I was thinking about volume fog and maybe some water dropes from pipes :). I will try your idea with 'jet steam' - it should give cool atmosphere :)

Hi, the subject is a little too gory for my taste, but I'm amazed at your skills, presentation and the quality of your movie. I can appreciate the talent it takes to pull something like this off so definitely an award winner in my books. :)

PS My condolences to your country at your loss. Hang in there.

digiboxoffice - yes all flares and glow's for all video i added in PS.

It's exceptional quality.

Can't wait to see the final cut.

The only shot I don't like is the tunnel fly-through. It seems too high and not the same style as the others. Kinda game fly-through.

The lift shot is cool...especially the pulling up to follow the depth sign.

Like others have said...I'd like to see a full movie of this ;)

STORY (Special thanks to Axiomatic who fixed text for english.)

In 1974, Poland, coal mines were shut down through out the region of Slask. No reason for the closures was given by the Government and this remained a mystery, until now.

The following account was recorded by some of the few surviving miners of that time, each one certified as insane by the government who denies their version of events.

Itâ??s long intestinal body looked to be filed with the bodies of the dead.

We can only hope that this terrible thing was destroyed forever.

if its silly question - sorry im bit stressed because of deadline and upload problems...

i tryed many times upload separated videos with better bit rate , i spent all night.. lot many many hours.. its all because of some java and my net error probably... im waiting until my friend will upload files for me from his computer. it would be cool for future challenges to add notes about such problems. i mentioned about those problems on FAQ , i found there that for example AdranLazar had same problem. Its something with net provider and data base.. im not tech, guy so i cant explain more detailed :)

04-20-2010, 10:32 AM
How are you guys even getting to see? ALL the videos here are broken for me. I even download the FLVs and they all stop at the same time each time. So it's not a download issue.

It's not just the vids in this thread...it's nearly all of them ???

But some of you are seeing them perfectly fine?

04-20-2010, 10:38 AM
I have the same problem. Some of the movies seem to break and then forcing them to reload is often impossible, even clearing all caches (forcing Flash cache to purge etc) the movie will then play and stop at some random point and I'll have to try again.

04-20-2010, 10:43 AM
whee, but i just managed to see this one in full and think it's awesome! great work :)

I even enjoy the music, with the little bass guitar riff at the end which lent such a 70's b-horror edge to the whole thing. Very much the sort of splatter-gore/grindhouse sort of movie I love to watch with a couple of close friends during the evening.

Awesome stuff Staszek. This is yet-another inspirational solo piece from you, well done :)

04-20-2010, 12:21 PM
Thanks all,

Sometimes are problems with flash players in the net. After download problems can apear with some players. I found that classic media player sometimes not work well , but when i tryed with 'standard' media player its working everytime with no problem. Maybe its flash codec problem. The same i had with all movies in all video challenges.

Im going to proepare version on youtube or vimeo , sorry you have to wait for but i had something realy urgent...
