My idea for doing a video is:

"Attack of the unbreakable eggs"

01 January 2010, 06:29 PM (

gathering some images to narrow down the idea of the look, feel, mood, etc...

01 January 2010, 06:45 PM
Here is the tentative script for my entry:

The kitchen is clean, but the fridge door is open.
A guy stumbles into the kitchen and his eyes are barely open.
He is still wearing his pajamas.
He turns to the fridge and realizes it is open.
He stares at it for a second while rubbing his eye.
He shrugs it off and reaches in to get some bacon and eggs.
The guy plops a pan on the stove top, and puts some bacon on it.
He yawns while staring out the window.
After almost falling asleep he looks down at the pan.
Bacon looks cooked so he reaches for an egg and clanks it on the side of the pan.
Realizing the egg is not broken he whacks the egg again, same outcome.
He brings the egg up to his face for inspection. The egg looks fine, just like the rest.
He takes out a butter knife and whacks the egg with it. The knife just bounces right off.
Guy drops the knife into the sink and in frustration squeezes the egg with both hands.
After failing to squash the egg he throws it on the floor.
The egg bounces off the floor and hits the guy right in the eye.
The guy is now furious. He pick up the egg and slams it on the counter.
He gets out the butcher knife and raises it above his head.
The knife comes down right on the egg but glances off it and gets stuck in the counter.
The egg in the meantime shoots from under the knife and breaks a vase on the kitchen table.
The guy storms off into the hallway and comes back with a sledge hammer.
He grabs the egg off the kitchen table and puts it in the middle of the floor.
Sledge hammer goes up and comes down right on top of the egg.
But instead of breaking, the egg just splits into two.
Frustrated and amazed at what he is seeing, the guy just keeps on smashing the eggs.
And the eggs just keep on multiplying.
Exhausted, the guy stops to see what he has done.
The whole floor of his kitchen is filled with eggs, unbreakable eggs.
To his astonishment the eggs start to move and swarm into a blob right in front of him.
The guy just stands there with his eyes wide open, frozen.
The swarm attacks the guy and he is no match.
After being done with the guy's limp body, the swarm leaves through the window...

Thank you for the comment.

Working on making a bone driven blend shapes, sort of.
So far I have an open shape and a smile shape. I will post an animation of those soon.

02 February 2010, 10:23 PM
I really like your character design and your concept. Made me giggle a little bit. One thing that I can suggest is that your kitchen doesn't fit the character design too well. The kitchen comes off as too realistic compared to your main character. Maybe cartoon up the kitchen a bit.

02 February 2010, 11:11 PM
Great modeling mate. As RavenEye said. Its too realistic for that kind of a character.

Also the character is awesome, face is killer...only thing I didnt like is the belly. To big for that skinny face. But thats my opinion.

Keep up the good work.

02 February 2010, 12:57 AM
Thanks for the comments and input.

Have not really occurred to me the style difference (been staring it for too long). I will probably change the kitchen to match the character, once I finish making all of the meshes. Not sure how to go about doing that yet.

Here is the video of the blend shapes working:

02 February 2010, 07:40 PM (

working on more blend shapes.

combined character and the room to see if they work together.

02 February 2010, 06:58 PM
I feel like he is a little too pink, with perhaps too much scattering... But the modelling is great, he manages to fit his background, and I can't wait to see it textured.

03 March 2010, 06:36 AM
The kitchen is very good.
I like the character.
Can't wait to see the animation ;-)

03 March 2010, 09:17 PM
I really like the details on the kitchen. I can't wait to see you put texture on it.

03 March 2010, 10:06 PM
Thank you for the comments.
I am looking forward to texturing and animation. The rig for the character is finished including the facial setup. Next I will finish up all the kitchen and prop modeling while testing it with the kitchen rig for intersection and such. Once that's done, it is UV time, so excited...

Working on the light setup and models to make sure that light fixture geometry is going to work with light setup. (

Waiting for the textures to be done...
Good work...

Making a layout of the animation to see how it is feeling.

I have a problem where I can't upload my flv video with CGuploader and I get this message:

But here is a video anyway for now:

03 March 2010, 11:44 AM
Very nice modeling, and texturing job. The animation is very good. Timing is right. I like the poses.

Good job and keep up!

03 March 2010, 02:41 PM
Cool poses.

I'm having the same issue of not being able to upload a flv with the cgUploader. Hope you figure it out.

03 March 2010, 11:58 PM
Thank you for the comments (

Finished the layout of the animation.
Next up is to make basic textures before animating the whole thing.

03 March 2010, 04:38 PM
this might be too late for you, since it looks like you have finished rigging and skinning.

i looked at your blocking ->
and if you want really really nice poses - it would do your character good if you added a joint between the shoulder and elbow, and a joint between the elbow and the wrist. This joint should be free transformed to create more fluid poses, so you would avoid those not so nice looking straight arms.

your set up (x shoulder, o elbow, C hand)

awesome posing setup (x shoulder, z awesome joint, o elbow, z awesome joint, C hand)

good luck. the idea is funny.

03 March 2010, 10:47 PM
Thank you for bringing it up.
I do have that setup in my rig, but I have never used bendable limbs like that. I am interested in trying it out though. (

wow, very nice animation.

03 March 2010, 12:57 AM (

Thank you.

Blocked out the character animation only.
Up next is splining and cleaning up.

great animation. nice work.
when you "break the elbow" you really "break the elbow". personally i think that it would like better with a litte shoulder rotation so it would like more believable and less rag doll. he is also a little rubbery coming out the yawn/stretch. the rest of your animation has a lot more snap to it.
i like the overall speed of the piece, but you might want to slow down the stretch, let him enjoy it.
drinking the coffee, opening the fridge is all well executed.
the first egg crack is good, the second need a harder/faster hit by just a little, the third a lot faster.
I totally miss that he grabs the egg as he turns. maybe a camera close up on the hand/egg on those frames if you want to keep that timing.
I like the throw.
I would say the dramatic pose at the end is too much but it feeds into the overly dramatic covering his eyes that he does. So it works as a consistent bit.

Anyway that's my thoughts, hope it's not too much. Keep up the good work.

03 March 2010, 12:55 PM

Your animation is working pretty fine to me. You bring life to your character, he might breath and speak. One crit would be about the field of view you choose when you stretch his spine, his backhead is out of field when he pull it backside and it might break motion flow for the viewer.
Very cool entry. Good luck YuriyXXX:thumbsup:

03 March 2010, 06:59 PM

hey YuriyXXX

Lighting looks very good. You did realy nice work on modeling and uvw in this kitchen , only color missing there :) . Shadering seams to be cool but its hard to say when everything blend together and because of antyaliasing. Too much same color everywhere. It would be nice to see rendered frame with higher rednering antyalising quality to see those nice details you did.

At beginnning you posted colors pallete you wish to use, and i sugest to back to your old colors idea.
Play with color and it will be realy cool!

04 April 2010, 01:26 PM
Thank you Staszek for your input.

Next video will have high AA quality so it will be easier to see the detail. I was trying to keep colors very simple and dual monochrome - orange/green, in order to keep the viewer's eye going where I want it to go. But I still have the option to play with colors in post to see If I like color variety over what I have now.

The whole animation was rendered to see how material and lights acted. There was a problem with the egg being spiky, which is fixed now. There is also a problem in the end with cached egg yolk, which I need to look at. I will add FG to the final animation, which will lighten up the shadows a bit.

nice entry! I like the subtle soundtrack you have in and overall light atmosphere. The animation could be sometimes more snappy and dinamic, but I guess it is a matter of taste. Good luck!
