Latest Update: Final Image: Bog Of The Rotten Scum
01 January 2010, 11:47 AM
years have passed and the citizens had slept in peace.
but they know: one day HE will return. and this time HE will pee on every place where untouched snow lies.
some kind of a movie poster.
01 January 2010, 11:48 AM
LMFAO. Ooh the dread!
Good luck with your entry, mate. Hilarious idea.
01 January 2010, 01:52 PM
thank you :)
added some lightnings and hair, hope it seems better now. :D
however, i'm not sure if i should work on that idea further or developing a new one.
01 January 2010, 07:39 AM
i've decided to go into a second idea, because of the lack of "b-movie"ness in the first one.
so, there are some minds i had tonight (could'nt sleep because of an influenza :banghead: ):
- what is a b-movie?
a b-movie is mostly of low budget, has unknown actors and normally points at the trashy/horror/splatter/scifi-genres
- my decision was the genre of scifihorror :D - brainaddicted green aliens, evil robots, cheap flying saucers, stooopid hooomans ("uuuurthlings") and that stuff.
- an absolutely idiotic-nuts name for a movie has to be found. something like "hooomans must die!" or "assault on planet uuurth"... maybe "invazion of teh brainmelt0rs" :argh:
- "mars attacks" and "monsters vs. aliens" ain't b-movies, but they're full of clichés of elder sci-fi-movies. i think these are good references.
- my idea is a movie poster. a huge robot and some flying saucers attacking a city, some actors standing in front of them, panicstruck, silly armed with a knife, a baseball bat and perhaps a banana. bananas are useful versus... uhm... whatever, a banana is a musthave. :D
on top of the scene are some aliens, obvious green painted human actors with obvious green painted toque blanches on their heads as huge brains :D
i will soon post a new concept/previs. :wavey:
01 January 2010, 07:45 AM
Had a great laugh watching those people run from the terror of urine..Its fantastically original
01 January 2010, 08:32 AM
here it is, well inspired by the music of devin townsends "ziltoid"-album :D
forgot the baseball bat, but the banana is included. *nod*
there will be some details that show the cheapness of the used materials, for example the huge robot is made of a beverage can, the flying saucers refer to salad bowls and so on.
teh brainmelt0rs from the black voids of the universe started their invasion on planet 'uuurth' to kill all creatures called 'hooomans' and to gather all brains they could find.
the more brains they have, the less they would be vulnerable by the might of a wellgrown banana.
total destruction! infernal devastation! death to all hooomans! groar!
01 January 2010, 08:47 AM
I like your second concept very much. The robots pose with the hand in the air is classic. I can see allready how the light and mood is coming along. I ll follow you.
The banana is sooo silly.
01 January 2010, 11:38 AM
yeah I really like the second one too :)
01 January 2010, 11:48 AM
I'm really digging the second one. I can already see it. Good luck with it! :wip:
01 January 2010, 12:00 PM
nice lighting! love the second one.
01 January 2010, 01:10 PM
thank you, lords and ladies! your comments and crits are always welcome
i think i'll stay by this concept. it matches my favorite movietheme and contains much challenge for me, (especially) concerning the painting of panicstruck hooomans.
good luck to you, too! :buttrock:
01 January 2010, 07:51 AM
almost a wip.
no, it is a wip. :D
added some lightsources, a foot of the robot and brains to the aliens :D
not sure about the lighting of the aliens, they seem too bright to me. :/
these are not the final colors; i will change them short before posting a final image.
01 January 2010, 07:54 AM
- image size set to 2618x4000
- colors of lightnings changed
- detailing of braaaaiiiins, better explosions
- additional banana! antennas for the robot!
- working on faces of aliens and hooomans
i'm thinking of changing the overall brightness of the image to set a much darker atmosphere. especially the robot seems to "friendly" to me... :banghead:
don't know if i should add the silhouettes of one or two robots in the background - perhaps the image could be too complex afterwards.
however, feel free to comment. :)
01 January 2010, 08:06 AM
Incredible style. the difference that one banana has made is beyond belief :P i jest haha
Great technique, those brain dudes look squishy
01 January 2010, 08:18 AM
Youre progress is awesome!
I think the robot looks friendly because of the eye. Maybe if you take away the black circle in it, or make the ovreall shape more "pointy".
01 January 2010, 12:01 PM
Yeah liking the second one alot, captured the B movie element nicely and I like the big robot alot. You can almost smell the cardboard tubes used to make it :)
01 January 2010, 03:59 PM
i like the pees man...
01 January 2010, 09:59 AM
thank you all and sorry @ raultabajara.
meanwhile, after having a weekend without doing something for the challenge, i looked at some posted works of other entrants and got v_e_r_y unsatisfied with mine. somehow annoying.
though i had fun with mine, it seems not to have the quality and "elaborateness" to fit into the challenge. it's somehow too messy. :banghead:
so, again i'm rethinking my concept and doing some scribbles. will upload one within the next hours, i hope.
01 January 2010, 11:19 AM
here's another idea.
i've decided on the splatter/horror/scifi-hybrid.
some dark atmosphere and the adaption of the singleeyed-idea from my previous wip.
as a b-movie. the story is as boring as possible: humans on a spacestation on mars encounter an evil alien, all got slain except a woman.
she picks up a huge gun and then the "who's the hunter?"-game begins.
there's senseless much blood, too much gore, a sexy woman and a vile alien.
though this is only a sketch, i think there's hope for it.
01 January 2010, 12:05 PM
Nice work ! Good luck ! :)
01 January 2010, 01:27 PM
Aww, I really liked the other one :(
The martians head looks good though :)
01 January 2010, 02:43 PM
i apologize, ladymedusa. maybe - there are some days left - i'll finish the old one, when there's nothing more to do. :)
ok. this is my first wip of the new idea. canvaz resized, started blocking and went into some detailing. the lower right corner is reserved for the title. i wonder what difficulties i had where the single eye should be staring at! x_X
01 January 2010, 10:14 AM
redesigned head of the maneater and added another one i the lower right corner, which originally was reserved for the title.
working on little things like the gun, the torn off head of a soldier and the planets edge. don't know if i should stay with the color of it's horizon.
feel free to comment :)
01 January 2010, 01:25 PM
I still like the pees man!
Is a pretty render! I see all you cgportfolio! very good! :D
01 January 2010, 03:46 PM
Good start ! You're really fast.
Keep up the good work ;)
01 January 2010, 08:21 AM
first, i like to thank you for your motivating comments. you guys rock!
so, now the real fun begins. :D
added for the lower maneater a trunk (proboscis) pulling at the womans leg. darkened the upper alien to give it a more gloomy look.
added some more senseless gore (skeleton)
thinking about adding some dirt, sweat and blood to the woman and her chaser to avoid a too sterile appearance. perhaps kind of slime may also be useful?
next step will include detailing of the planets surfaces.
of course, the image doesn't show an originally b-movie look. but i think, there can be b-movies today and in future, too. this might be one of it. :P
01 January 2010, 08:33 AM
ahh you're at the fun part, i'm really impressed with the slimey feel to the aliens, you seem to have little trouble creating complex compositions. The only thing at this stage that stands out to me is the scale of the mans head in the grasp of the aliens hand in relation to the main female character, its quite a large noggin.
anyways may the fun continue :D
on second look i think it is a montage of imagery as opposed one coherent image. Both those creatures are the same one?.
01 January 2010, 09:03 AM
Both those creatures are the same one?.
hey light, thank you, your work for the challenge is amazing!
these are not the same aliens. :)
perhaps i should vary their heads a little more, eventually by adding kind of different skinpatterns.
the upper, larger one should be an alpha of the maneaters, the lower one is a common hunter.
01 January 2010, 09:28 AM
Nice nice. I'm starting to like it :)
I like how the two aliens are really consistent, but they might be a little bit too similar to each other for to different species
01 January 2010, 07:21 AM
yup, i definitely will vary the hunting alien to make it easier to differ between themselves.
i also will completely rebuild the lower section of the work to give it a more dynamic touch.
as it is now, it's... boring. :argh:
so, i will post in the next hour(s) an update. ;)
01 January 2010, 08:06 AM
here it is.
woman and hunter fighting, another perspective and more senseless gore (tm)!
to separate upper and lower half of the image, the action scene has other lightsources than the upper one, e.g. the muzzle flash as the primary light, some dim diodes as secondary lights.
for the upper half, i'm thinking of adding a distant star from half behind the clouds as an subtle light source.
the planet in the background is still wip.
hope you like it!
edit: the direction where the single eye of the upper alien is staring, finally i'm happy with this one. :D
01 January 2010, 08:20 AM
working on the lower half, that's a true challenge for me.
in the upper half added a star half behind the clouds as an additional light source, dunno if i should let it there or just take it out...
much problems with the cloud to the left of the upper alien *sigh*. i would like to let it in, but have no idea how to make it more fitting to the rest of the upper half.
while working on the image, i can see more of a modern b-movie.
02 February 2010, 09:01 AM
only a minor update, because i'm additionally working for a current 3day-classtest and i don't have much time to spend for the challenge. x_X
working a bit on the lower creature and the woman.
hope to post soon a better update when i'm finished with my test.
02 February 2010, 08:50 AM
on final spurt.
some color corrections, gunflare and working on details like the ground, highlights and some darkening
although this is almost finished, i'm not sure to submit this work as a final. the lack of comments wether if they're bad critique or good ones show me that i'm perhaps working into a totally wrong direction.
another idea has come clear to me in the last days, something that fits more the b-movie theme, but i don't have done a decision yet.
let me pleaseplease know if there is something that's not good. i'm mainly into the challenge to learn from others and to improve me :)
02 February 2010, 09:01 AM
This is coming around really nicely :)
This is close to perfection if you ask me. Changing the gunflare was also a nice catch.
Whit that being purple it seems a slight bit more plasma-ish or sci-fi-ish in my opinion.
02 February 2010, 09:42 AM
Great work all round but i'm defiantly a fan of your second idea. i thought that really nailed b-movie :D
02 February 2010, 10:31 AM
Gosh that is all shiny now, your rendering is spot on. It does have a definate B-Movie aesthetic to it, especially down to the colours you have selected, almost classical martian colours ..
I read you have a 3rd idea formulating, would love to see a scribble of that regardless.
"Teh Brain Melt0rs" still works a treat for me FYI, it still holds "chuckle" value and possibly holds a stronger B movie aesthetic to it..You thought it was messy from memory, but as a veiwer i never saw that..i saw a robot, brain people and 2 bananas, haha.
hey 40 odd days to go 2 strong concepts possibly a 3rd..imho thats a cool position to be in
keep positive ;)
02 February 2010, 01:59 PM
thank you for your feedbacks, ladymedusa, emptyshell and lightsovereign. :)
while finishing this work, i will tomorrow come up with the new idea, which contains many elements of the "invazion of teh brainmelt0rs"-concept.
perhaps i will go for a more cartoonic style, that would be a great challenge to me.
02 February 2010, 04:02 PM
Nice sliminess and lighting; love your materials. Composition is still lacking something though. Also the proportions seem wierd = the guy's head seems too big in comparison with the girl, especially because she is in the foreground and his head is further back. I feel like this image would also benefit from something in the background. My eye is led up the road but there's nothing to reward me when i get there, just clouds. Keep up the good work
02 February 2010, 08:34 AM
hi aimanimation, thank you for the critique ;)
the road indeed leads into the nothing, perhaps i should paint in a little science colony near the horizon.
i forgot to tell that the last wip is mirrored; it should be flipped. :)
the fight in the foreground and the greater alien with the torn off head are two different scenes; i don't know how to separate them more without destrying the image as a whole. :(
now on to the next idea:
within the next hour i'll post some character concept informations and later some doodles.
02 February 2010, 09:11 AM
ok, here we go! first character concepts:
Ok, this is my secret weapon: my first character design i did some years years ago.
It developed throughout the last three years to a person that got an amount of details i never thought of.
This is a boy, living as a girl. There would be too much text, so i am trying to give the most important informations to keep it brief.
Yunuxx emereon is an 16 years old orphan who lives with his (sometimes evil) seaturtle umikiui (means kiwi-fruit of the ocean) in the house of his passed-away parents that had left him wealthyness. He has many admirers, males (who don’t know that he is a boy) and many female (some who know about his secret!)
He has strange minds and is somehow stupid, but was blessed with a heart big as a mountain. He wears exotic dresses and is the worst singer you can mind. He has no fighting skills like superheros, but much luck.
Here in the b-movie challenge, i spent him the believe that bananas could change destiny. So he fights an alien robot with bananas. I am serious.
Umikiui sticks to the robot and tries to defeat him with her bites.
In the movie, yunuxx plays yunuxx. That keeps the costs low beause there is no need for an additional character design!
Brad Buffalo as Colonel B.
The 48 years old husband of sara b. he is the stereotype of all movie colonels. He wears that eighties sunglasses, smokes cigars, hates pacifism and loves to laugh at physical weak persons (or aliens). He seems to be the ultimate badass military guy, but in followship with his wife he is as docile as a old teddybear.
His hobbies are: playing football, watching old rambo-movies and mistreating civilians. Sometimes he also watches love romances in tv.
Because he hates abnormal people like yunuxx, he must kill evil invaders.
If you let him choose between a gun and a banana, guess what he does (after he shot you). Yes, he kills the banana, too.
B. Married as Sara B.
Colonel b.s beloved 39 years old wife. She is a grumping and eternally babbling woman who dislikes dirt, love romances and disobedient aliens and husbands. She rescues yunuxx everytime her husband wants to kill him. Sara b. is afraid of... turtles. Especially evil ones with button eyes. Besides that, she knows no fear. She is a living weird dream to alien invaders. And she wears pink shirts! Aaaaaah....!
Beware hooomans, we come to destroy your planet called uuurth. We need your brainz. Resistaaance is foootile.
The extraterrestrials come to earth to cleanse the universe of bad b-movies and to collect brains. Their worst enemies they face within yunuxx, colonel b and his wife, umikiui and bananas.
They are green, have huge brains, antennas and evil plans and get confused by yunuxx’ stupidity. „what is that urthling communicating?“ – „it tells about how funny it is to play with small bugs.“ – „we are evil. We destroy urth. Urthling must flee in panic.“ – „it does not. It now talks about painting wooden doors with a color named black. It has a terrible voice.“
This turtle is sometimes evil (supposed by yunuxx). She often bites him when he’s not aware. Generally, she bites whenever there’s a chance. On the other side, she is a cute animal with button eyes and sometimes strange behaviour (lived to long by yunuxx’ side). And she is the world’s fastest moving turtle! When you don’t look at her, she can move as fast as a supersportcar!!!11one
The turtle-logo on yunuxx’ clothes are a reference to Umikiui.
02 February 2010, 07:49 AM
some silly first ideas i had, yunuxx and umikiui fighting some robots with bananas (silly fighting style: check) and colonel b. bombing some aliens and laughing at them (weird action: check).
i will put in three aliens; of course the later will vary in the shape of their brains (brains: check).
but no idea what to do with sara b. - perhaps wielding a dustcleaner or fighting an alien after taking a bath (sexy woman: check).
02 February 2010, 10:01 AM
started doodling some poses, here's that with yunuxx and umikiui.
currently thinking about what elements i will use in the work:
- yunuxx, umikiui, colonel b and his wife for the "good" ones
- three aliens (two of them are squabbling with the other), two robots for the "bad" ones
- a good explosion oder two are always fine! additionally, i will use them to separate the two sides of the image
i'm planning to build in some mistakes, for example the extraterrestrials squabbling with themselves: they're poking with their huge brains against each other because of the few room the have in the image. or sara b discovering dust at the border of the image (like it is shown up in the previous post). :D
so, now i will enter the weekend to think about the challenge; hopefully i'll return with a composition doodle.
02 February 2010, 09:52 AM
characters now in color, design of clothes. not really happy with the colonel's outfit, i don't know why :/
02 February 2010, 10:24 AM
again i'm not really happy with this concept, although it promises muchmuchmuch fun for painting.
now, i'm going with the idea of some kind of bad fantasymovies with barbarians, blood, gore, bad sculpted dragons and that stuff.
i remember that "the barbarians"-movie with the wrestling-twins playing gore and kutchek, what matches my imagination of a b-movie.
my idea how to involve "b-movie":
two b_adass b_arbarianz fighting each other, with "b"s in their names.
some b_lood, b_rutal b_attles, b_eerdrinking b_arbarians and mayhap a b_oneripping b_ragon. oops, dragon.
the title could be:
- "the B_arbarian MOVIE!"
- "BLOOD & DEVASTATION" (for a barbarian theme, caps always do fine :D )
- "B_arbarian B_rawl"
- "B_lood B_rawl"
02 February 2010, 11:49 AM
ok, here it is.
bhargr and bruin are enemies.. they are chiefs of their barbarian clans, which live on the same land.
and there are dragons and other hostile creatures, too.
every day are fierce battles fought, and everytime bhargr and bruin meet, they duel until both surrender because of exhaustion until the next day and so on...
in the background of the doodle, there is a big brawl between their clans, and a dragon and another creature are there, too. perhaps on the ground i will add some empty and broken beer barrels. and puddles of mud and blood.
the image should carry the title "Blood Brawl - the B(arbarian) MOVIE", it seems to me to fit in the flat story.
hope you like it.
barbariaaan greetz, *grunt*
02 February 2010, 02:16 PM
put in the lines and started painting with the first colors.
some difficulties of balancing the equilibrium between bhargr and bruin, perhaps bruin will get some kind of subtle glowing eyes.
like the red hair of bhargr, but don't know if i should desaturate it a little bit.
thinking about what lightsource for the foreground i will use. frontal light for the fighting chiefs?
02 February 2010, 09:17 AM
flipped the image and tested some light sources (torches to the left and right).
modified bruins dress and gave bhargr boots.
thinking about the backgrounds for the heads of the two in the upper third. bhargr could get a beer tankard and some shiny treasures (or women) in the background, while bruin is set in front of a burning village. or maybe a sleeping dragon.
what do you think?
02 February 2010, 02:21 PM
mostly doing corrections of shapes and adding more colors. some barrels in the lower third planned.
perhaps i will add bruin a bearskull. bhargr now has a scar and an earring.
02 February 2010, 01:07 AM
heya bran, what an interesting lesson in setting up a composition. seeing the intersecting lines, very simplistic but effective. this one i do like.
hopefully you feel this is the concept for you. the lighting and detailing is coming along real nicely..Needs a banana in there somewhere though haha,
No real crits to offer im sorry, you seem to be going steady!!,
look forward to seeing more updates
02 February 2010, 05:42 AM
thank you, lightsovereign!
maybe a banana will be added in reference to my earlier concepts. thinking about a barbarian in the background raising a banana instead of a weapon into the air, lol. :D
today, i plan to modify the dresses of the two fighting barbarians. bhargr (the guy) will get some tattoos and elsewhere additional plate (or a part of a scale mail) with some spikes on it to let him look more fierce, bruin will get another dresschange and maybe a bearskull on her head or a warpainting. because bhargr has more contrast than bruin, she needs something that puts her on the same level of contrast. anyone got an idea what this could be? :)
bhargrs weapons will be modified, too.
and what about a global enemy in the image, like an evil (nonalcoholic) king, a dark sorceress or something else? :scream:
02 February 2010, 08:04 AM
Nice work so far, the colours and the use of light and shadow is excellent. Great work!!
02 February 2010, 12:03 PM
thank you, paperboy, that's motivating me. :)
if there's critique, let me plspls know it - i'm participating at this challenge to see where my weaknesses are.
02 February 2010, 07:39 AM
on and on and on and on...
after seeing the incredible works of other participants, i'm somehow disencouraged. :D
but i won't leave this challenge. what i've begun i'll bring to the finish, wether it's good or not.
so, here's what happened:
resized the image to 4500 px in height. the computer gets veryveryvery slow when painting with a brush size larger than 300 and saving the file needs about two minutes. :D
redesigned the dress of bruin and added some details to bhargr in the middle. worked on bruin in the top third.
what's to come:
in the next wip there will be a banana in the background and i'll work on the crowd. :P
but i have no clue about a global enemy. and, where to position him. maybe i can expand the canvas to get some free room for him (or her).
if there is something to crit (and there is i'm sure), please feel free to write it down here. :)
02 February 2010, 10:18 AM
after rearranging the "heroes", i thought of filling the important triangle in the middle with the shared enemy, a giant, fat, ugly cyclops named brawler.
i had some ideas like a nagaqueen, an undead king, a sexy sorceress, an evil priest and a demon warrior - but while sketching them in, brawler brought the best b-movieish feeling of them in.
if you have other suggestions or thoughts, please let me know. :)
somewhere in the background added in a banana. :P
worked also on the crowds and decided for the dragon and a hydra at the sides.
02 February 2010, 02:55 PM
today it's going faster than i expected.
brawler is almost done, added a lightsource from above as a test. worked at the crowd (the banana is now turned upwards :D ) and have much fun.
your thoughts are always welcome. :)
02 February 2010, 09:52 AM
i'm coming close to the end.
worked on the creatures at the left and the right and added some skeletons in the middle. clouds for the "sky" and first attempt for the lettering.
don't know, but it seems to me to become a very busy image.
there will be a border around the image to let it look like an old parchment (hope this is the correct word) that has seen some bad days. :D
if you have some thoughts, please let me know :)
02 February 2010, 02:44 PM
Oh, Yes! this is looking nice. This looks like it'd have a potential of an epic movie, even if its done whit a low budget.
There is something weird whit the female barbarian. I think its the abdomen or her left leg.. I can't tell what it is.. I just see its a little odd. Sorry I can't be of more help there. Might be wrong too.. She's having the belt much higher than I'm used to
02 February 2010, 02:55 PM
thank you, ladymedusa, for your feedback.
yeah, it does not seem very b-moviish, that's why i will put in the lettering with manymany b's in it (some postes above, it is explained :D ).
the belt of bruin i've put in that height because in a reference to the cheap fantasy-movies of the eighties, where women generally wore them as high. maybe i'll put it lower, it's worth a try. :)
02 February 2010, 11:55 AM
during the last days, many people told me that the last work hadn't much of a b-movie, so i stopped working on it.
today i warmed up photoshop and started painting something and that's it:
a bog where undead murderers, betrayers, drug dealers, cannibals and so on dwell, waiting for those come there to give them an evil welcome.
a bog of the rotten scum.
they will wear weapons and feast on pieces of other humans.
and there will be unnecessary much blood and torn flesh in the image to capture the mood of a really bad gore-b-movie.
02 February 2010, 01:28 PM
The new idea looks cool!! Nice depth and colour to the peice!!
02 February 2010, 05:23 PM
Big green creatures are simply charming
02 February 2010, 08:12 AM
paperboy and lamorra, thank you. :)
today i will submit the first wip. there will be a weapon in the hand of the front undead and his head will be turned a bit sidewards for a more "dead" looking.
more to the background, i'm thinking of adding more undeads.
02 February 2010, 12:30 PM
first wip, working on the mob.
added a weapon and an eye for the undead in the front and played with the colours to get away from the huge amount of green. also darkened the image a bit.
theres now a female undead to the left.
my next step will be thinking of how to make the undead appear much more evil and nefarious to let them look like they are the gatekeepers to an earthly hell.
02 February 2010, 11:14 PM
Now those are some zombies! I really like the characters and the great atmosphere you've created.
02 February 2010, 03:05 PM
worked on the environment, the lightning above is only a test. the sky will be a challenge for itself, because it will be mostly covered by the lettering, but is an important lightsource for the undeads.
some dead small trees added and a bit more details to the undeads like blood and wounds.
also varied with the colors a tiny bit, hope you like it. :>
02 February 2010, 03:27 PM
Love the update! The atmosphere is great. The guys in the far background blend in too much with the environment though, I liked it in the earlier update when they stood out a bit. Just a tad.
02 February 2010, 11:54 PM
you've got a great sense of color and lighting. great compositions all, but 'scum' is my favorite.
03 March 2010, 09:00 AM
i'm sorry for answering late, but the last days were stressful for me. thanks for the feedback, guys! :)
additionally, i have to work for the next weeks on another computer.
the bad news - the backup i've created from the mac where i had my files from the challenge can't be read, groar :argh:. corrupt files.
because the challenge ends in 18 (?) days, i have to come up with a new concept. :banghead:
damn. so today i hope i will post first images - i have to hurry.

Wow, Its definitely been interesting following your ideas!... They've really been across the board, but I must say, your latest one really feels like it hits the mark!
I love the title! I'm really diggin the enclosure and composition! And best of all, It definitely holds up to the B-Movie poster feel!
Also, the "zombies" are hilarious, especially love the guy to the left aimlessly gnawing on a human leg
Your lighting idea, as it is more of lighting since it will be covered by the title, gives great eerieness to the zombies, and works well for me! :D
Can't wait to see if this is your final idea, and how you finish it out!
Cheers mate!

thank you for your comment. :)
currently we're trying to recover my challenge-files, so there is hope to me. :wip:
03 March 2010, 10:02 AM
Oh My!! I feel blind, I didn't even see your last post..
I am crossing my fingers for you buddy!
Hope everything turns out ok!
I kinna know how you feel though, my wacom tablet died on me a little over a week ago, and I haven't been able to work at all...
I'm hoping I can make it by the deadline as well

my wacom tablet died on me a little over a week ago, and I haven't been able to work at all...
that would be my personal apocalypse if that happened to me!
hope you'll get a new one or an alternative in time!
and thanks for your support, it's good to know there's someone crossing the thumbs. ;)
03 March 2010, 11:57 AM
Bran your entry looks very good. Its definitely looks like b-movie and I love how the green tone working. Keep it up.
03 March 2010, 01:10 PM
thank you for your feedbacks! :D
finally i'm glad that some files could be recovered.
because most of the time i've spend setting up the new computer, i did some minor detailing as shown in the chosen cutout.
i hope the highlights of the undeads don't let them look as if they were made of metal.
i added some subtle shapes in the background and changed one of the hung to a "fresher" (argh! ._.) corpse instead of letting it a skeleton.
the next step will be working on the swamp water, some bog grass and the trees.
and... what about some arms and legs in the shallow water?
03 March 2010, 08:37 AM
only few time to work on it, hope i can finish it in time!
first steps on the vegetation, some highlighting on the undead (hope you noticed the spot in the eye of the front undead :D )and added a bit more blood.
don't know if the image is too bright to get a good atmosphere, what do you think?
03 March 2010, 02:35 PM
This is looking really nice - glad you were able to recover some files! (I lost one file during this challenge and so I ended up taking the JPG it's saved of it to post here, blowing it up, and painting over it!)
I don't think you need to go any darker: Mood-wise, it's really clear that this is a night-time scene and overall what the tone of the movie is. I do like your idea of adding body parts to the water, and maybe a hint of red down there in spots too...?
A couple things seem a little odd to me: Of the 2 secondary characters - the one gnawing on the leg and the other with the axe - both seem about the same distance back from the camera... but one is in the muck up to his upper ankles and the other is almost up to his knees. Maybe too late to fix, and it may not even matter - no one said the swamp floor had to be even - it just caught my eye.
Second silly nitpick: It seems funny how the source of the lightning, where it hits the clouds, is obscured by a tree branch. Valid, just seems like something you'd show clearly, dunno why.
But overall, aside from my picky comments, this is looking terrific! Very appropriate to the theme. Nice work!
03 March 2010, 05:43 AM
thank you for your kind comment. :)
concerning the characters: yes, you're right. i think it would be better to put the huge axe-guy more to the background by desaturating him a bit.
body parts: yay, blood spots on the water surface and some hands out of the water! i hope i will find some good spots in the swamp water for them.
lightning: i'm glad you told it to me! in the next wip, i will remove some foliage :) by looking at it now as it is, it indeed seems to come out of the tree. :D
03 March 2010, 07:32 AM
I can't tell you how much I like this piece. It really captures that late 60s/70s horror movie poster vibe, or Eriee/Creepy mag stuff. To build on something Michael (the Walrus) said. . .I think if you loose some of the greens on the dead center tree in the way back distance, and pull down some of the darker blues and grays from the sky it will really help create a V shape and guide the viewer atttention even more to the zombies. Hope that helps. Either way it is very cool. I especailly likethe mix of warm greens yellows against the cool blues grays-you don't see many warms in the night pieces-but yours pulls it off nicely and it is that monster creepy swamp yellow green that is so "cool" ha ha play on words.
03 March 2010, 12:19 PM
the v-shape pointing to the undead is a good suggestion - i'm currently experimenting with it in photoshop. :)
greetz from underneath the bog's surface,
03 March 2010, 01:53 PM
though it looks like only a bit has changed, there's been much work:
barks on the trees, removed some foliage from the farest tree to get a subtle v-shape ;) and changed the lightning.
detailing on the front undead, added some more fog and there's a hand showing the middle finger. :D
and now i'm working on some reflections, blood spots and moss and grasses...
hope you like it.
03 March 2010, 01:46 AM
Sorry its taken me a minute to check back with you, But it makes me uber happy to hear you were able to get some of your files back and keep working!
And I'm lovin the changes and progress!
The flip of the img works just fine for me! but I might think about flipping the main front character back, only because as it is his arms seem to mirror the arms of the two main characters behind him, makes me see a pattern that draws my attention away.
Love the highlights, and I don't think it makes anything look metal like, if anything, promotes slimyness, hehehe
Can't wait to see how this finishes out over the next week :D
I've really enjoyed watching your thread!
Cheers mate!
03 March 2010, 08:18 AM
thanks for your support!
i hope you can finish your entry until friday - barbarians have to raid the challenge!
as a note, i often flip my images during working on it, because thats a good method for me to find bad areas in the image.
i definately will flip the main character - but i'm afraid i've too little time left.
in school, we had to change rooms some minutes ago. now i'm sitting at a pentium4-computer with 1gb ram :banghead: - and this week, we have important lessons in webdesign and on friday we'll write exams.
i hope i can use my breaks for working on my challenge-entry. :argh:
03 March 2010, 10:30 AM
this is almost done.
added more blood spots, did some reflections, worked on the sides in the lower third and made a new lightning. and i'm happy with the sky, although it will be mostly covered by the title "bog of the rotten scum".
nex step will include some color correction and -tweaking (maybe change the bluish tones more to a subtle violet to get more contrast and a more threatening look) and finally the lettering: a stupid title with stupid shadows and "a cheap b-movie production featuring bored dead".
and, of course, an age restriction hint. :D
phew, hope that i can finish it in time.
greetings from out a foggy bog,
03 March 2010, 09:16 AM
so, final spurt!
- bog of the rotten scum
- 65 minutes uncut abhorrent carnage!
- a cheap b-movie production
- featuring bored dead
- crude violence
- nc-99 (no one 99 and under admitted)
- in oldschool 2d
somehow i'm not really happy with the title, but i can't tell what is it :(
first i had it in full red. it had a huge contrast to the background but that didn't fit the style of the image somehow.
what do you think?
03 March 2010, 09:41 AM
small final, greater final will be uploaded soon. :)
03 March 2010, 09:46 AM
bog of the rotten scum
who ever did evil, won't ascend to heaven.
they stay on earth.
some curious tourists discovered an unknown spot in a grand bog, where a mob of undead criminals - drug dealers, homicidal maniacs, bruisers, mass murderers and all what was evil in elder times, too - ambushes them at night.
well, that's the story. a b-(splatter)movie showing crude violence and buckets of blood don't needs much more story.
there are no heroes, the whole movie is a carnage orgy what can be done with a low budget.
this could be a (fictive) b-movie of the eighties.
my idea was to create a dark coverartwork for that movie, that has those special bad contrasts between the image and the writings on it.
it shows the undead scum looming out of the bog's mist during a thunderstorm. against the gloomy sky, some hung skeletons dangle from the trees.
- britannic bold
- crackles ("in oldschool 2D") - note: don't know if i spelled it right, i had to work on different computers during the challenge.
- nc-17 .eps-file from the mpaa (motion picture association of america) modified to nc-99
this is my first challenge. painting a b-movie-image, was indeed a huge challenge, because i never was interested in those films. i learned more than i would have learned in a year, and that's a great reward for me. participating in this event among the great artists of the cgsociety is an experience that i won't forget.
but there were some problems, too. i am a trainee and i had to work on the challenge during classes, so i had to listen with the ears to the teachers while staring at photoshop and thinking about the weekly exams.
we had often to change the rooms and the computers. working on imacs and the next day on a p4-windows-pc is... evil. i lost some challenge files last week, but some could be recovered.
- ... to all artists that gave me feedbacks and motivated me. thank you mates!
- ... to my class and especially our tutors who gave me the time working on my entry during classes :)
- ... to the buckets of coffee

Congrats on finishing, Bran! :applause:
Amazing brush work and colors! Even the characters are looking slow to move, the whole image is full of dynamic and is looking very dramatic! Superb work!
Yeah, and thank you for feedback!:)
03 March 2010, 10:50 AM
Great to see you cross the finish line, Bran. Especially considering you went through 4 different concepts before settling on this one. It really is finished beautifully, STRONG b-movie theme present.
How did you get that wonderful textured look. i never know how to get textures like this.
Fantastic and congratulations on finishing!
03 March 2010, 01:32 PM
peleng and lightsovereign,
many thousand thanks to you!
great to have you here!
How did you get that wonderful textured look. i never know how to get textures like this.
just take a layer with some huuuuge brushstrokes on it, mix some textures with varying colors onto it, put the layer mode to "soft light" (i think it is so called, i worked with the german version of ps where it is known as "weiches licht") and play with the layers opacity. i used 76% opacity and some additional colorsettings, increased saturation and added another layer with texturebrushstrokes on it (there's a great tutorial of linda bergqvist's site furiae.com about creating texture brushes!).
03 March 2010, 01:35 PM
Congrats on finishing a great piece! The texture you added does a lot to grunge up the smooth paints and is a great effect (although perhaps a bit strong... just imho.)
And I love the lower right corner: Oldschool 2d FTW!
03 March 2010, 02:38 PM
Good job, bran!
Impressive output... it's like you did 3 Images for this challenge. :D
Congrats, you've done very well.
03 March 2010, 06:31 PM
Congratulations on an Awesome Finish!!!
I love the final texture look you gave everything, and the title works so well! :D
Cheers to an incredible competition! I must say you did freakin amazing for your first challenge!
And I loved all the ideas you kept coming up with before this bog idea, they were all fantastic
03 March 2010, 07:27 PM
IT gave me a creepy feeling. Congrats:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:
03 March 2010, 08:23 AM
walrus, thank you for looking in ;) yeah, the texture is strongly visible, but i think, that is okay.
that is a problem when i'm working on different computers: not all monitors are calibrated, and not everywhere i'm allowed to calibrate them because of missing admin-rights. :D
overall, i'm really happy with that what i produced. and that's a good reward.
btw i would like to congratulate you for your entry. its great to see how professionals work. :)
yakonusuke, it would be better for me if i had started with only concept and finish that instead of reorientating myself a few times, hehe. your work is one of the most convincing entries, and it gave me some smiles looking at it. especially the "lvl 99" - that was a huge lol for me. :D
geeks rock! but i miss a monochrome version of it :P
bergquist, great you've finished your work! now barbarians can raid the jury and plunder their beer supplies.
and thank you for stopping by and motivate me! best wishes to you!
aven99, thank you. when it creates a creepy feeling, it shows me the concept works. :D
03 March 2010, 10:19 AM
Nicely done, I liked all previous version of your images and this one is cool too. Cool idea with special filtr on top, it add something extra to it.
03 March 2010, 01:37 PM
glad you like it. :)
also congratulations to your entry; the guy with the stereoglasses on and the one in the womens underwear made me laugh. :D
03 March 2010, 01:55 PM
hey! Your composition, colors, tones, all preparation is impeccable. All is well impressive. great work, brother!
03 March 2010, 02:31 PM
good old zombies.. nice image man..great mood.. Congratulations on finishing!
03 March 2010, 01:24 AM
Totally cool image, great mood on it, love the background, simply awesome :D
Congratulations for this great work!! Good luck and cheers!!
03 March 2010, 08:24 AM
hey freelah, thanks!
FranciscoAlvarezDelgado, yeah, zombies are always doing well *undead grin*
ferx, thanks too! want to gratulate you for doing such a dynamic entry - love those little green creatures around!
best luck to you all! :buttrock:
03 March 2010, 09:18 PM
after a few attempts you have chosen the best idea for the concept BMovie :D
Congratulations for excellent work
03 March 2010, 08:00 PM
Cool pic :) I like the mood, and zombie design. The details like hand protruding from the water in the right part of image, or zomibie eating someone's leg are very nice and give a lot of life to the scene. Congratulations ;)
04 April 2010, 07:21 AM
hey andias and ros1, i'm sorry i couldn't reply earlier, much to do in the last days. many thanks for looking in!
