Juraj !
Again in the game !

01 January 2010, 11:41 PM
hey Gilles,

well, when Secret Agent was on the show I ended up with one concept sketch :) I have plenty of B-class stuff in my DVD shelf, letīs see if I can manage some time to play this game. Have fun!

01 January 2010, 01:42 PM (

B - class Bees. Wait, there was a movie called "Bee Movie" right? Some fancy, CG, fully animated happy ride. Well, this one is different :D

01 January 2010, 04:36 PM
Hi, looks like a great concept! Would have been a good idea for me to do! (see avatar) lol. All the best and look forward to new concepts! :)

01 January 2010, 04:56 PM
Nice sketch !
I still really love your style !

01 January 2010, 06:06 PM
Great sketch,
but i'm not really sure about the title. It's way too close to the title of that feature film. It's actually exact the same.
But unsure about what the story will be, maybe you should make it a bit more scary and B-class. So maybe a little less abstract. Maybe you'll come up with a more appropriate name after you figured out the whole short.

Cheers and good luck

01 January 2010, 06:47 PM
hey folks,

@BUZZFX - thanks. Yeah the buzzy beez are coming :) In fact the bees idea was based on that blinking honeycomb like thing (see bottom of the poster sketch), so they were kind of last piece of the story. I think that at the end they will look pretty far from ordinary bee design :)
@Gilles - cool, glad to know that!
@Nothingness - thanks. Well, yeah I kind of mentioned that there is the BEE MOVIE title already. I watched that animated feature at cinema so I should know about it. I just like the same pronunciation of "B" and "BEE" so you have an idea where that came from. But I took your advice and already made some new titles, but that will be the very last thing to decide.

I am currently searching hobby and craft shops to find some good materials for my models. I would love to stay away from my computer to take the rest from my daily work. So I will work with real miniatures and footages mixed with some CG bits and postproduction. I am looking for some advice about good 3D camera tracker since I never used such a tool. Also some resources of "how to kind" will be great. Thanks.

01 January 2010, 11:55 AM
Really moody poster design, it'll be nice to see different approach with the physical models - looking forward to watching your progress

Best of luck

01 January 2010, 01:37 PM
welcome to the challenge!
Best of luck!:buttrock:

still doodling around B-BEE-Movie concept

01 January 2010, 05:31 PM
@adib - thanks Adrian. Great to see you entering again. You are like unstopable machine :)

@Duncs - thanks. Hey I finaly saw your finished Steampunk stuff. Good final touch. About the physical models - yeah, should be fun. My tribute to old masters like EdWood :) I bought things for UFO model already. Hope to have it finished by the end of next week with some test renders.

Hey I get replacement for my low budget HD cam today. Now instead of 6 hotpixels I have only 4. Well, this crap should help to B-grade mood right? lol

01 January 2010, 07:10 PM (

miniature construction in progress. Some LED lights and silver color coming soon :)

01 January 2010, 08:19 AM
Hey Juraj! Glad to see you in!
Love the style so far - the UFO looks totally convincing ;)

01 January 2010, 10:45 AM
I've just written a reply to you on my time to write on yours...well...I LOVE THE UFO! it was one of my childreams making a b-movie..and the very first idea was about ufos!

Looking at your ufo model...a couple of tears dorps down my eyes! it is cool! i really cant wait to see something filmed!! so ...good luck and keep it up!

01 January 2010, 12:36 PM u got to tell me what cam u will use!!! :p

01 January 2010, 07:09 AM
Come on ! Show us more !

01 January 2010, 04:01 PM
@Gunilla - hey, thanks. Yeah UFO is real, I was lucky enough to have my camera with me when I saw it :D

@OZ - camileo H20, totally grainy, useless in dark or night shots. I will have to do a lot of postpro on it. Man, I just bought it to try something else in my production. I hope to get some FHD DSLR later this year, but for now I will go with what I have.

@gpepper - I will as soon as I have something new ;) Had some problems with LED lights recently, but I am going to make the final touches to the UFO this weekend.

01 January 2010, 06:42 PM
I love the second UFO image and this will look really cool and B-Movieish (is that a word) using a video camera. Can't wait to see more.:)

01 January 2010, 10:19 PM (

This may end up as CG creature but will definitely keep the human body as the base for it.

Now that's what I call "Super B"! Keep up the work man!

02 February 2010, 10:15 AM
mouahah !
nice animation ! It seems to be animated by hand !

02 February 2010, 10:24 AM
@Johnseventine @Duncs @Anubis3D - thank you folks. Great to see nice feedback!

@gpepper - glad you like it Gilles. Not sure if you really can name this to be animation. You know, it is just miniature hanging on the wires in front of window :)

I made some rough storyboard yesterday. So far it looks like fun to work on. Milestones for my easygoing schedule are:

day80 - 60: production of miniatures and CG elements. (already running)
day60 - 40: filming, voice recording, vfx
day40 - 20: montage, vfx, soundtrack
day20 - 00: final postproduction, soundtrack, 30sec trailer edit, behind the scenes edit.

Yeah, thatīs it.

[QUOTE=Juraj@gpepper - glad you like it Gilles. Not sure if you really can name this to be animation. You know, it is just miniature hanging on the wires in front of window :)[/QUOTE]

OMG ! I now understand why I found it animated by hand ! It is !
Sorry I didn't read your thread enough to capture all the spirit of it !
The idea become more attractive !
(not that your thread wasn't !)

02 February 2010, 11:30 AM
wow...hats off to you, that ship is the coolest thing i have seen on cgtalk in years!!
loooove it!

02 February 2010, 07:17 PM
@gpepper - lol, too bad I didnīt let you stay with your wrong interpretation. It could be funny to watch you are amazed by my CG skills :D

@opentarget - glad you like it. Cool to see Dubliner around, itīs like my second home there  (sorry, they donīt doo Smilies with Guinness)

For today, I would like to say I have no respect for stalking artists that keep sucking good stuff from other threads so they have enough of ideas to enter the challenge!

03 March 2010, 12:24 PM
OK, after the little break I am back in the challenge. I lost almost a month but hopefuly will finish this on time. Updates soon!

03 March 2010, 09:47 AM (

Here are my so far ideas for the main name of the movie. I am going for late 60's - 70's movie look, where the cinema already had some good base for vfx and cinematography. "The Honeycomb" sounds more horrorish but "The Bee Masters" is just cool enough. Not sure, feel free to add some suggestions. Thanks.

03 March 2010, 10:30 PM
At first sight i thought it was a entomologic documentary, but now i'm pretty sure you make an over-Bee class movie, i'm not even sure there are enough letters in alphabet to categorize it.;)
I love ufo animation and scheme color fonts.
Good luck Juraj !

Hello Juraj,

Are you still looking for a business partner as per your note. (below)

Looking for freelance business partner /co-worker from the EU for online co-operation. Starting July 2010.

If so I may be interested therefore would appreciate consideration.

03 March 2010, 06:00 PM
Those foto's of the 'analogue' stuff look intriguing. Can' wait to see what'll come out of that.
Also, is that real camera footage of the bulding top with a blue filter applied to fake nighttime? If so it's really well done...

This is great to see someone bring in the minitures. I have always been a fan of miniture work in movies, B or not (alien, aliens- and star wars, that's why the new movies were so diapointing) cant wait to see your finished product.

03 March 2010, 12:04 PM
howdy folks,

@medunecer - hey, thanks for the feedback mate! The working on real elements is good destress from the everyday computer work. I feel like I want to use less computers in all my future projects. However, this real stuff took more budget than CG generated what is just crazy.

@AlphaDDC07 - sorry my PM box was full thanks to my CGS membership expiration. Thanks for your interest, I will get in touch with you to discuss this further.

@MistaFraggadeliX - glad you like it. Yes it is real camera footage with some more color corrections reather than blue filter, but still not that hard to create. It is pretty tricky how people can accept blueish image as a night shot, thanks to the hollywood for that standard :D

@ChristopheFauconneau - lol, thanks. I guess more bumblebees than birds.

@Scrotal - Thanks for nice feedback. As I mentioned, it is pretty two sided thing theese days. Creating miniatures is fun but took some more money and time. I would have this done sooner and probably more appealing to the CG folks around with computer 3D. But hell I wanted to try this kind of things and this is a nice platform to do so. After all at the end this will be a wildstyle piece of work with live footage, miniatures, 2D and 3D cgi postproduction elements... a bit of everything.

03 March 2010, 04:58 PM
awe this is soo cool. I hope you can get the fealing that you set out to do. The sketches was great, but its hard to recreate that in a video.
Surely you are doing everything you can with the sets and all the analogic stuff. Thats what makes this great.

03 March 2010, 11:06 AM

Keep it up:thumbsup:

COOL MAN! oh my! you are doin' it! I cant wait to see new stuff..

03 March 2010, 11:51 AM
Go Juraj! Great stuff! I agree with you: is important to keep hands on "dusty" stuff sometimes. I think that many of us come from creating real stuff and is good to alternate pushing buttons on a keyboard with building things. And you're doing a great job. One question: are you going to use some camera tracking software to insert the flying saucers in the BG? If yes, do you know "Voodoo"? Great job again. Talk to you soon!

How You upload your video?Cose I tried last night and didn t work.

hey Adrian, thanks. I am sure, in your case it was just a server issue since this is not your first challenge and you already uploaded some vids. So I think you did everything correctly, just some mystery between your machine and CGS screwed it. Try again and make sure your firewall have the ChallengeUploader allowed.

04 April 2010, 05:36 PM
Thanks man its working now! BEST TO YOU!

Good luck!

04 April 2010, 04:32 PM
Juraj, tis is a colossal! The idea of the cg monster with wires is great!
Actors faces are amazing. Your movie has an official fan here in Italy...
Keep on the great job!

04 April 2010, 09:07 PM
hey folks,

@fgdf - thanks. As for the wip videos, I went with mostly stills because I really donīt have much from the 3D animation this time. For the rest the 2D is imho pretty informative and you are free to ask anything production related. Hope thatīs okay.

@Luc14no - Glad you like it. Hope to have it ready at the end of this week.

@medunecer - Cool buddy! I left the idea of real life costume because it was pretty unreal to get it done. But I wanted to keep the spirit of such a B-grade monster. Wires are just natural for this thing I guess. Hope you will keep the fanclub after the official release

Okay, still a lot to do. I am very surprised by some of the unstopable machines around here. I really have no idea where those folks get the power to produce such a heavy work. Now I am not sure - am I just that lazy or the others are just that crazy? Anyway, hope to see you at the end of this week with some worth watching material!

Very intense cat performance. Keep up the good spirit for final.

thanks Christophe, this was my first time animating such a heavy detailed and realistic character. The mesh was so dense and my computer barely handled it. So I am pretty happy you like it  And the cat... yeah, thats the spirit!

Dear producers, here is my new movie concept. The title is

So, we have those scary classy outlanders, but they are acting very peaceful and soon they become our friends from the deep space. They give us some fancy new technology and design ideas.
But after they went home, the real terror begins. Bee-like human sized creatures arise from the honeycomb structure they had left in the forest. Their mission is not peaceful at all. Kill or transform the human race. Cool so far, right?
Luckily, we have this Tough Guy with some background around bee-keeping thanks to his grandfather. He is fearless and always hated everything about the outlanders. So the human race could win this game. But the ending is still open. I have actually two versions for you. Anyway, I think this is pretty good story, also very original, very catchy.
Oh yes, and there is this, I call her - Girl in Charge. She discovered the nest of the bees, she also will be transformed to their human connection for a small part of the movie. She will be the important woman in the life of our hero, always good to have something like this, right?

Juraj Molcak, the director

The B-Movie theme was really hard to resist. I wanted to try some new techniques in my creation and the B-grade platform was just perfect for it. The standard nowadays production techniques are well known so it was fun to break some of them. I decided to go with wildstyle, using miniatures, live action and of course CG. I bought the very low budget digital camcorder Camileo H20. Everything was shot in HD during the daylight since the camera is useless for night shots. I used various materials for my miniatures - pot saucers, rear bike lights, toy cymbals, polystyrene, cardboard, acrylic colors, twigs, tea leaves... The CG was a must for my main bee character because it was timeconsuming to create the real life costume. Personally, I am happy with the final composition. It has a sort of retro feel. I haven't got any specific time on mind, however I get some inspiration from the 70s and 80s.
I would love to state here, that I like bees, honey, and all the bee-keeping stuff, so this short film does not represent my thinking about those lovely creatures.
Hope you enjoyed my entry. Thanks.

04 April 2010, 10:29 PM
Juraj, you did it! Your final movie is amazing and impressive. It's difficult to understand how you was able to do it in time, with so many different tasks (cgi, live actions, maquettes, compositing...)!
Your final entry is funny and creative. Flawless for me. One more thing: the actors are great! Congratulations my friend! (I think this time I'll ask you a signed copy of the official "the bee masters"...)

04 April 2010, 11:35 AM
This is one of my faver entrys. Shot of girl with ant head is totaly awsome.
Shot with ants in room is very well done too - its looks very natural. And many more :)
Actors did great work as well and all fits together.

Good luck!

04 April 2010, 02:05 PM
@Beuda - it's actually U.H.O. not u.f.o. ;) Glad you like the bee, I sooo wanted to make the real costume, but that would be suicide.

@JUDZIGN - yeah, the whole feature... one day you will have that pleasure I hope.

@fgdf - o I think we all need this Good luck thing, you know yourself how are those challenges at the end. Anyway, I just watched your film again, still think it's one of the best interpretations of the B-grade thing around.

@BebeteLANUITE - not to mention I wanted to have landing shot with tanks too. You can see the miniatures in the making of. Strange how close storywise our entries are. We probably have the same mindset, maybe we can team up one day.

@adelben - you know how the story go - I am the BEE master, you are the B master :D

@RomainJouandeau - yeah, the fake arms are my favs. With my lamish rigging skills it was really brainer. But it covered what I needed.

@ChristopheFauconneau - haha, by superb you meant Super-B, right? It's sort of funny story about Car Futura logo. I wanted to have an old car there, but since my actors had pretty full schedule I had to shot with what we had at the time. Now, the curves of that VW are, let's face it, too contemporary. So the story, with outlanders future design poped out. I know the detail is extremly small, but it is noticable on the HD version. I think it's funky touch.

@Framed - fantastic. The humor is very sensitive thing. I am happy it gets you for a moment.

@Luc14no - I wrote down what I felt by watching your entry. You really have some extra points from me over some of the prefered entries here. You simply brought my taste of cool B-grade feeling to your video. I don't care if that's your highest cg skills level or not. It works perfectly for the theme.

@medunecer - np, will send the DVD with HD trailer if you want  Hope it will reach your mailbox, unlike the illustration last time.

@Staszek - man, the ants are in the different entry, lol. I have BEEs here.:arteest:Actually, I am glad you made this mistake, because it's very natural to the B-grade creatures, that sometimes they look like something else than what they should represent. Oh, how much we love the B-grade style!

@Maingon, opentarget, adib - thanks folks for the nice feedback!

04 April 2010, 02:15 PM
oh sorry man ! right, woman with bee head is totaly awsome :)

04 April 2010, 02:59 PM
@BebeteLANUITE - not to mention I wanted to have landing shot with tanks too. You can see the miniatures in the making of. Strange how close storywise our entries are. We probably have the same mindset, maybe we can team up one day.

Hello Juraj,

I thought about the story and the willing of making miniature and after the shooting days i see your entry.
I think "wow, we've got the same idea." (I mean working with miniatures. It's a bit risky in a CG competition :D ).
But i didn't talk about doing insects aliens heads in my thread and you didn't too, i guess.
I find that incredible and very interesting to have similar idea at this point.
You'll think i'm bagging you but i was planed to make a miniature landing set with small trees like you done (so without the plateform you did :) ). I didn't go as far than you by adding lights on the flying saucers.
For the fact of make a team with you. It will be a good experience if we have a similar vision or points of interest. :)
I think your job is great. I very like it not because it's similar to mine but because it's very well done.

04 April 2010, 03:06 PM
oh sorry man ! right, woman with bee head is totaly awsome :)

My grilfriend says that you can do the mistake between Bee and Ant because we didn't see the bee's wings on the room shot. So, i think this fact can reassure you about your capacity to differentiate a bee and an Ant :)

04 April 2010, 03:19 PM
heh, speaking about the wings. Looks like I left them out for some reason. Check out the text near the side sketch (not sure about the wings, maybe no wings at all)... But damn, what was the reason?

04 April 2010, 03:18 AM
Very nice entry, i think the whole rythm works very nicely. It somehow reminded me of George Melies and the beginnings of special effects, a very nice use of resources, congrats and good luck.

04 April 2010, 10:09 AM
Hi, I am glad you like my entry.

It somehow reminded me of George Melies and the beginnings of special effects

Hm, interesting, but it wasn't intentional at all and I kindly disagree with you. In fact, I would never call any of the George Melies works to be the B-grade stuff. They are all the gems of vfx history. B-Movie definitely have different spirit and guides to me.

04 April 2010, 01:05 AM
I would never call any of the George Melies works to be the B-grade stuff. They are all the gems of vfx history.

Hey Juraj, I agree with you. Melies is the father of vfx, he created 90% of tricks still used nowadays.
He brought a funky touch to Movies.

04 April 2010, 10:09 AM
Agreed, VFX doesnt become "B" because its old, B-movies are B from the get go :) Melies stuff was state of the art back then..

Your voice over reminded me of "Italian Spiderman"

04 April 2010, 10:29 AM
Great job Juraj !
Finally, there is a lot of vfx shots ! Excellent !

04 April 2010, 06:33 PM
@ChristopheFauconneau @Framed - yep, George Melies RESPECT  I just bought small reference book 101 SF movies you must see. Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) is the first mentioned.

@Framed - lol, the Italian Spiderman is brutal! Thanks for the link. Mustache!

@gpepper - ahah, finally you saw it. Yes, the second part of the trailer you asked for is loaded with visual trickery. Some are so hidden, like wallpaper in the shot where girl is screaming or texture on the curtain in the shot with my black cat. I did try many new things for me, especially green screen stuff. Hope to get better camera next time, so lights, colors and focus will be stable during whole take. Lot's of new things to learn every day. Profesionally I am not in this field, I do casual games. Personal projects are the only way for me to get something into my portfolio and based on this hopefuly get some paid job in this area of visual art.

04 April 2010, 07:54 AM
very funny i love it ! ^^

04 April 2010, 04:28 PM
Top notch humour ! Great sfx and vfx.
All the best !

@ASKsebastienchauvel - Talking about funny... hard to compare with your hamster giant. Glad you love it.

@queenhostin - hm, interesting to see executive producer entering the CGcommunity just to comment some B-grade entries. Hope you're around some A-class movie production scouting the talents.

I hoped you won, this is my favorite work, now that the winners are known I can say that you deserved to win, by the synthesis of the idea and its effectiveness.
It made me laugh a lot, and everyone I showed understood immediately and they laughed, is a great job and you have a very special mood.
I am glad that you have received this great recognition.
I hope we meet in other challenge.
(my english is bad, sorry jaja)
