Some character references for concept.

01-21-2010, 06:02 PM
Hey, nice idea. Good luck man! :)

01-21-2010, 06:03 PM
hehe I can't help but stare at Bela Lugosi on that image - he looks really funny

01-22-2010, 02:19 AM (

Well, here's my basic concept. In college I was a projectionist and we would bring in a lot of older B-Movies. My favorite were the old monster movie sequels. I'm thinking an old Norman Rockwell'esque style for this. Should be fun. Comments and suggestions appreciated

The basic jist is Resurrecting The Past. The forgotten B-Heroes of yester-year band together in an attempt to revive their fading glory by once again gracing the silver screen;)

01-22-2010, 02:39 AM
Marat-Ars...Thanks. I hope you think so after you see the sketch:blush:

Intervain...yep, I love that picture! Not very scary huh?

01-22-2010, 04:29 AM
I like the sketch! It has all the great B-movie Stars and Monsters! And humorous as well. This certainly will be a pleasure to watch.

01-22-2010, 03:13 PM
Thanks Yongkiat, this should be a fun one.:)

01-22-2010, 03:32 PM
cool ...
but as is, the monsters seem to be meaningless ...
and if they were watching and wondering how the projector works?

01-22-2010, 04:18 PM
Hey raultabajara, Thanks for the comment. Ya, this sketch is pretty loose and the characters don't emote well. The sketch was more about testing a composition than giving the story...but your point is well taken.:)

I'm hoping character expressions and posing will, in the end, pull off the narrative of a bunch of classic old b-movie characters who are banding together and trying to revive their genre' and bring back the golden age of cinema. I'm hoping to make it quirky and fun with a lot of unexpected cameo appearances peppered throughout.

Thanks again, your comment really helps to drive the importance of STORY. Cheers!!

hey... this idea is very interesting! I like it!

01-23-2010, 10:49 AM
I like the idea/sketch.
Keep it up!

01-23-2010, 05:29 PM
Nice concept Mike, love the idea!

Cool sketch although I'm not sure what monster half butt cheek girl is :-) Plus, she seems to be the focal point for all the other monsters, was that intentional?

Good luck, I can't wait to see the finished piece!

01-23-2010, 07:25 PM
Very nice concept. Sketch is very descriptive. I'm anxious to see it develop.

01-23-2010, 08:35 PM
JP-Lamothe, MVDB, Creativebush, RageOfAges...Thanks for your comments and input!

Bush, I actually threw the bikini vixen in for your benefit...I might even give her two cheeks:eek: . What's the B-Movie genre without an assortment of bodasciousness?

Actually, the characters will all be rather oblivious of each other unless they are interacting in some way. I do want the cental character (most likely Vincent Price) to be staring directly at the veiwer...kind of an "ah hah I see you" moment. All of the rest will be doing their own thing or be somewhat interested in the mess piling up around the projector.

Thanks again for the input.

01-23-2010, 08:42 PM
what an incredibly complex image you've got going, all the iconic b grade movie characters in a theatre booth..i like the way you've shown kong..

brilliant concept, hopefully your art is rolling along nicely

01-23-2010, 09:14 PM
I love the concept, looks promising!

01-24-2010, 04:52 AM
A classic compilation of B-movie monsters, but is it within the B-movie budget? The Norman Rockwell foil for a classic B-movie like the Thanksgiving dinner by Norman Rockwell only with the turkey cooked but alive/zombie style and mad (show traces of stings holding it up) the family looking a bit distressed. Maybe I just have a animated food thing going on.

All the best...

01-25-2010, 04:33 AM
Thanks LightSovereign! It is going to be a challenge to get this together in time. :hmm:

pbalsic...thanks, I'll try to give it a good go.:wip: made me laugh. Thanks! I love the zombie turkey angel... but your big broccoli definately takes the cake!:applause:

02-03-2010, 06:22 AM (

I've been working a little on character style. Unfortunately I have some issues with my fingers going numb and my wrist in a brace. Kind of makes things difficult. :-(

Anyway, I like the feel of this slightly exaggerated style sketch and am working on a few more of the characters in this style too. Hopefully I can post more soon.

02-03-2010, 08:45 PM
Hey Michael,

Really cool sketches for sure. Like a lot your last one, great approach :D. Cant wait to see more updates on your concept. Cheers!!

02-04-2010, 02:51 AM
Very good combination and pose.

02-04-2010, 07:21 AM
Great acting. If only the real Lagoon Creature had such emotional range. Great concept and sketches. Maybe the Blob can be the janitor, cleaning up the theatre, or hair gel for the wolfman.

Cool entry.

02-04-2010, 02:06 PM
Great start, looking forward to see how it develops, I think it would be cool if the monster was taller and bulkier than the girl to give more contrast, but its looking good so far!

02-04-2010, 06:26 PM
Ferx and Korendo... Thanks for the encouragement.

ravioli_rancher... Love your ideas on other characters! Hairjell for the wolfman is AWESOME!

FranciscoAlvarezDelgado... Great comment on the creature. Taller he shall be. Thanks.

02-04-2010, 06:32 PM
The concept work is ace, and the idea behind your piece is awesome!!!

02-05-2010, 08:49 AM

Nice to see you're trying out your wings again Mike...
But did you have to do this also around the theme of "Monster and Girl"???

Anyways... hope the hand is better soon. We await your triumphant return.

02-08-2010, 06:29 AM (

Had a chance after the Suber Bowl to work on another character style sketch for the Wolfman. Needs some tweaking but he should fit the scene well.

02-08-2010, 11:05 AM
Really cool sketch, love the expression on his face! :bounce:

02-08-2010, 04:47 PM
Thank Paperboy! I'm still fighting not to get to tight too soon. I've got at least 7 other characters to develop and I always end up getting too focused on the faces too early. I think it's because I'm never too excited about the rough sketch feel and end up dorking with it until it starts to flesh up.

Anyway, thanks for the encouragements! I love your killer chicken concept. The modeling is coming along nicely and the POV is really intriguing!

02-09-2010, 03:14 PM
Hey Michael,Its been a while!nice to see that you are doing well, good luck!!

02-09-2010, 08:27 PM
Yea you can see the struggle of mayonnaise or mustard on the wolf mans face..Its a remarkable sketch, very clean well designed character, i like the gentle hue used to create these sketches.

02-10-2010, 11:45 PM (

I modeled a quick background in 3D to use as a painting Matte. Now I can start placing the character sketches and working on overall composition.

02-11-2010, 05:57 AM
Hey Michael,

Nice updates! The warewolf expression is really cool :D like a lot. The background works really well

Cool work. Looking forward for more updates. Cheers!!

02-11-2010, 07:09 AM
Hi Michael! The last update looks like a start of an awesome work. :buttrock: Keep it up! Can't wait to see the other characters!

02-11-2010, 08:17 AM

Thanks for your encouragement too!! :) Yeah I know what you mean about sometimes getting too focused on things too early, I am really looking forward to seeing your other characters!!

02-11-2010, 12:02 PM
very interesting concept. keep it up man. All the best!

02-13-2010, 07:40 PM (

I found some time and refined the projector a little and messed with some lighting. Working on Character placement now. Lots of characters to place.

Suggestions welcome...

02-15-2010, 05:20 AM (

Added another character sketch based on Vincent Price. Not a good likeness yet but as far as I want to take it until I get all the rest of the characters in. I have at least 6 more to place before I can get a final composition and start some color tests. Hope I can make the deadline.

02-15-2010, 11:38 AM
Really cool idea, I absolutely love this kind of pictures! (Yes I admit it - I love the hopper inspired immage with elvis, merilyn and bogart taking the places in the bar ;) ) can't wait for more details :)

02-15-2010, 03:17 PM
Nice Idea!
I like it very much

02-16-2010, 12:25 AM
Brrrrr i m affraiddd!
nice

02-16-2010, 06:58 AM (

Found some time to work on Frank and was then able to throw him in the composition mix. Next up Dracula.

02-16-2010, 07:04 AM
Great concept, I really like the idea and the composition. Keep it up !

02-17-2010, 02:19 AM
Very nice rendering of the projectionist face.

02-17-2010, 04:51 AM
Coming along great, Frank is cool, my favorite so far is the projectionist because of the great job you have done lighting him.

02-17-2010, 06:10 AM
Ferx, PELENG, Paperboy, overcontrast, tcochu, najjaci, JUDZIGN, Gopher3D, Korendo, and aimanimation, THANKS for the encouragement and comments. It really helps motivate me.

I'm looking forward to getting a little extra time in the next couple of days to finish off the rest of the character sketches and finalize the compostion. I spent an hour trying to figure out why my color picker was only changing my background color...grrrrr! :hmm: I need to get this puppy moving:shrug:

02-17-2010, 07:32 AM (

Was able to sketch out the mummy character tonight and throw him in the layout. Dracula is next.

02-17-2010, 07:53 AM
thats looking fine. you have an solid grasp on creating characters, they all look as if they belong there, they fit the seem perfectly.. I love the mummy getting tangled up in the film reel, thats a real cheeky sense of humour..

anyways, way to go, good progress.

02-18-2010, 12:11 PM
Amazing work Renderspud!! You are a great natural illustrator, those characters have great expressions, stuff!

02-24-2010, 06:24 AM (

It's been awhile since I posted. Finally got some time to set a couple more characters in the scene and flush out the design a little more. Still have a few more to place then some value tweaks and then onto color tests and then some serious painting.

02-24-2010, 02:52 PM
hah, it's looking great. lots of humor there too :)

the projectionist/doctor character sort of looks like robert downy jnr to me ... wacky.

02-24-2010, 04:10 PM
Hahaha, love the update. I like how perverted kong looks lol. What is blinding dracula? Wouldnt it make more sense if he and the mummy exchanged places.

02-24-2010, 05:11 PM
axiomatic - Thanks...Downy Jr. huh? Funny. Now that you mention it I see him too. Funny:surprised

aimanimation - Great comment on Dracula. He's actually supposed to be reacting to Frank biting the power cable. I havn't done much with the electric flash yet...and now that you mention it I think Drac is a little too far away as well. I'll tweak this and keep my eye on it. THANKS!!!

02-24-2010, 05:38 PM
This is AWESOME! Nice work, great concept. I REALLY like the sign and velvet rope for "employees only" nice touch on the joke you're portraying.

If I had to critique something it would be that the girls legs are to short in relation to her torso/head... But that's really nitpicking.

02-24-2010, 09:23 PM
Great characters, I love the facial expressions on each!! Look forward to seeing the next stage

02-25-2010, 01:12 AM (

I've placed most of the rough characters and am now messing with color themes. I'm trying really hard not to get too caught up in the details, but they call to me.

02-25-2010, 01:51 AM
There you go, now dracula makes sense. The giant woman behind kong is not that hot of an idea, I cant tell who she is and there's no reason i can think of for her to be there. Kind of crowds the background. Another thing that kind of bothers me, now that i think about it is the chords on the bottom right hand corner. They have very sharp highlights so my eye pops to them but they serve no purpose. If there was another creature's leg caught up in them then I wouldn't mind them so much. Maybe bigfoot's giant foot can fill that corner hah.

02-25-2010, 02:15 AM
a little ray of light coming down out of the ufo perhaps? :D

02-25-2010, 02:25 AM
Hey aimanimation... Great comments (once again) ;) Yep, I'm not too crazy about the 50 foot woman back there behind kong either...especially in that pose. Maybe if she was peeking over the wall opposite the wall kong is looking through...hmmm.

The coils on the floor in the lower right are really quick (and really bad) strokes that represent where a giant pile of film will go. I know it doesn't look like that now...but it will become a large tangled mess of celulose:wip: .

BUSH... Thanks for the comment on the gal being a little short in the body. I originally was going to exaggerate all of the characters...don't know what happened with that idea. LOL.

Thanks again for the really helps.

02-25-2010, 02:50 AM
awesome lighting and great composition

03-03-2010, 06:24 AM (

I finally got some time to start painting. SOOOOOO much to do.

03-03-2010, 06:55 AM
Mike is that you as Dracula? I know it is :-)

Looking good! Wish I was as dedicated as you are to getting this done.

03-03-2010, 08:22 AM
Loving it!! Great painting, really like the light and shadowing on Dracula and Frankie!

03-03-2010, 02:53 PM
It's looking great, Michael! The devil is in the details, and seeing your cleaned-up versions of the characters, like Drac and Frankie in this last post) really takes the piece a long way to enliven it. (But wait, did I say Devil? Ooops, look like you forgot one bad guy... j/k!) But the colored characters are looking so good!

A couple small crits: You might consider moving the 50-ft-tall woman left more so that she cuts a distinct silhouette from King Kong instead of blending into him (although color might just fix that too.)

THe legs on the woman on the left (with the Creature from the Black Lagoon) aren't quite there yet - maybe the left on could be more shapely, especially the lower half. Her expression is a bit blank too, but after seeing this last pose, I have no doubt that will change as you work on her more.

It's funny to see the mad scientist/camera operator and wolfman together in this last image post: It makes me realize that their heads are both at the same tilt, they have similar hair, and their eyes are the same shape. Maybe as you work on them, you could vary them more: Like makign the eyes of the wolfman rounder and/or arching/squinting one eye of the camera-man. Or straightening the Wolfman's head a bit.

Anyhow, just small ideas. Either way, looking nice! Good luck!

03-03-2010, 08:34 PM
Thanks for the encouragement and critique guys.

Axiomatic - Sorry I missed your post earlier. Definately need lights on the saucers...they are placeholder for now. Thanks!

Bush - Drac's made up but I guess I might have oozed into it with a little bit of Mike-likeness.

Paperboy - Thank you!

Walrus - Great tips. Thank you very much. I killed the 50 ft. woman for now:twisted: . She might reapper if I can get back to her. I've had a couple comments on the creatures gal-pal so I'll definately be giving her some special attention. Great comment to on the head parallels. I never really thought about it before. Defintately will be refining the expressions!

03-05-2010, 03:06 AM (

Painted a little more this evening. Things are starting to come together. Lots more to do!

03-05-2010, 09:24 PM
Hey Michael,

The image is looking really great, like a lot the lighting mood on the image and cool expression s for the characters. Agree with Walrus about the heads issue. :)

Great work and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

03-05-2010, 10:41 PM
Nice work, can't wait to see more. Pan out with your next post :-)

I like the brand name on the projector... hehe.

03-05-2010, 11:40 PM
just fabtastic!. yea i'd love to see more too, the mummy had me chuckling in the last shot!..

One of my favourites, this is!!.

03-07-2010, 07:56 AM
More Please!

I love every character.

Great progress

03-08-2010, 12:39 AM (

I've been working on the mummy and some background elements including the vents. I also tweaked the projectionists head a bit (thanks Walrus). TONS left to do!!!

03-08-2010, 05:06 AM (

I meant to attach this with my last post but couldn't get it to work right. DOH!

03-08-2010, 07:57 AM
This is looking most awesome Renderspud my man!! I am so looking forward to seeing the finished peice, the details on each character are so cool!

03-17-2010, 05:38 PM
WOW... Only two days left. :hmm: I don't know if I'm going to make it.

I've been totally out of the loop for the last couple of weeks due to some unexpected blips in this journey that is life.

I've got tons to do to try to finish this on time and am having a really HARD time trying to gather enough creative steam to get this going again and put in some late-night hours.

Anyhow, thanks for the comments Paperboy. I appreciate it.

03-18-2010, 06:39 AM (

Man...I still have so much to do. The roof, Kong, shadows, the rope and sign, the floor, ufo's.... oh boy.

In an attempt to get things done before the deadlince I've cropped into the image and lost the Creature and his gal pal. I still like this layout and it is finally starting to come together. I think I am going to have to take a vacation day tomorrow to get this presentable.

03-18-2010, 09:36 PM (

Kongs pretty much done. Onto rest of ceiling and walls.

03-19-2010, 05:47 PM
Very sweet image. All the classic characters from horror movies. I especially like the camera guy. Looks like he's mad.

03-19-2010, 06:53 PM (

Fresh out of a 50 year retirement, the intrepid band of retired monsters strip off their B-Movie laurels and commandeer the old theater's projection booth. Proud of the endless sequels they inspired, the ghoulish gang prepare for a wild night of food, fiends, frolic, and fright as they try to bring their glory days back to life.

This image was inspired by the old classic horror monsters that scared the stuffing out of me as a kid. They used to have a late-night TV theater in the early 70's called Science Fiction Theater and I used to stay up late and scare myself sleepless. My favorite monsters are in the image.

I based my monsters after the ones I know inspired a miriad of B-Movie sequels. They are loosely patterned after:

The Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.)
Frankenstein (Boris Karloff)
Dracula (Bella Lagosi)
The Mummy (Karloff)
Vincent Price (Himself)
The Blob (Itself)
King Kong (1933 version)

This was fun to do but I ran out of time and had to cut the The Creature From the Black Lagoon. I was bummed about that...although, he didn't have as many sequels as the others :-)

Anyway, this was a great contest with TONS of great stuff! Thanks for critiques and helps along the way!!

03-19-2010, 07:40 PM
Here is a link to a little larger version:

03-19-2010, 09:01 PM
Congrats on finishing! Glad you had time to get all of this done. It's a shame about the creature from the Black Lagoon, but it was a good time-saving decision to trim him and it didn't leave a hole in the canvas. Good luck!

03-19-2010, 09:26 PM
Simply Classic! :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: <------ This is what their doing in the theatre.

Outstandingly Supurb Piece!

03-19-2010, 09:47 PM
Hey bro! I loved the way you preserved the original characters look and added his colorful and realistic style. Excellent! :)

03-20-2010, 12:12 AM
Nice work man, funny and perfect. Congratulations.

03-20-2010, 01:42 AM
That looks great Mike, although you dropped the dame :( I can't say anyhing lewd because of who the model is :)

Did you use yourself as the model again for Godzilla? Hehe...

Seriously though, great job. Mike FTW!

03-20-2010, 08:08 PM
Thanks for the kind words guys:blush:
I have to admit I was a little disappointed with this final. I think it turned out OK but I had a lot more I wanted to do with it and I just ran out of time. Such is life tho.

I might pitter with this over the next few weeks. I had some little suprize characters that were supposed to go in the background and few other little things that I never got to.

Anyway, it was fun (except for the last two days:banghead: ) and I think I'll keep on with this so that I can use it in a portfolio some day.

Thanks again!

03-20-2010, 08:14 PM
hi michael,i am sure nobody really satified with the result(99% max),i guess.
but to be honest you did a great job my friend!the biger version just great. i can see all the details.

03-21-2010, 01:03 PM
Awesome final piece!! Loved the characters and their facial expressions. Congratulations mate on finishing it, and good luck with the comp! :bounce:

03-21-2010, 07:30 PM
Very funny image! Love all the little things going on, particularly the wolfman's insane expression and pose, and the blob oozing trough the projector's window (which I discovered only after a while). The composition works well and wasn't hurt by the cropping (though the creature from the black lagoon is one of the coolest rubber monsters around). Great entry!

03-21-2010, 07:34 PM
Beautiful! After looking at your great work I really want to watch some B-rated movie!

03-22-2010, 01:54 AM
Hey bro! I loved the way you preserved the original characters look and added his colorful and realistic style. Excellent! :)
Ditto, really captured the original characters look! Congratulations!

03-23-2010, 04:53 AM

Thanks for the encoruagement. It's amazing how much inspiration comes from just a few comments from so many talented people.

03-25-2010, 12:27 AM
Hey Michael,

Really great image. Love the cool atmosphere on your image and the gang of classic monsters, great!!. Vicent Price handling the projector is simply fantastic! :D Like a lot the retro touch with the cinema food stuff :D, the coke, the mustard, the hotdog and the popcorns bag on the floor, put a cool and clever nostalgic touch on the image. The lighting mood is really nice.

Congratulations for this great concept!! Good luck! And now, time for a lot of tequila shots :D Cheers!!

03-25-2010, 07:10 PM
Thanks Ferx! I appreciate the detailed comments. Glad you liked it!:wavey:
