Good luck this time :)

01 January 2010, 04:05 PM
awesome!!! i subscribed as well! :D

01 January 2010, 08:15 PM
Yoohoo, this will be fun. I´m already exited about the upcoming entries in here!
I have some idea in mind and really hope i can make it in time ( my life right now is more like meeting one deadline after another, means *sucks*)
But then again the topic was too tempting.

Yakonsuke: Thx buddy, looking forward to your entry as well. Hm, London .... Nice!
I should give you a ring when i´m there in May. How about that?

Martin, thanks mate. Good luck to you too and HAVE FUN!

Johannes, thank you. Viel Spass und tolle Ideen.

01 January 2010, 08:26 PM (

O.K. for starters and inspiration a little editing on an ad i did last year for Bosch.
I think i go for "kitchen of the 50th" or something like like that. I like the designs and colors they had.

edit: Just realising this movie is so cheap, they even couldn´t afford a "c" *ouch*

01 January 2010, 09:10 PM
hahaha.. awesome idea! cant wait to see ur mad skills when start working on the real piece :D good luck!

01 January 2010, 12:27 AM
Hey, Torsten, good to see you participating in one of these again! Look forward to seeing how your leftovers get fleshed out!

01 January 2010, 12:37 AM
great idea ! theres a nice humour to it, good luck.

01 January 2010, 09:13 AM
Ninja, hey, so good to see another familiar face around. Best of luck for your entry, i will definitely will keep an eye on it.

Walrus, i was already wandering what took you so long to show up *hehe* Did i miss your entry or will you skip this one? Can´t imagine a challenge without Michael. After all it was you who inspired me to go for this one. But anyway, hope you and your wife are doing fine, please give her my regards.

Emptyshell, many thanks.

I hope you guys will not be too disappointed that of course the topic will definitely not be "Attack of the leftovers"- As i wrote, just playing around with some pics on my harddrive to get in the mood. I realized it will be hard to go for an even more absurd title than the real ones....

01 January 2010, 09:08 PM
Cool start.
looking forward for more concepts to come. :wip:

Good luck with the challenge.

01 January 2010, 09:19 PM
Haha rocking idea! I love it. Can't wait to start seeing some more. :D

01 January 2010, 10:04 AM
that's beautiful already :)

01 January 2010, 10:20 AM
Thats a good idea and really B Movie too. Excellent

01 January 2010, 10:23 AM
That is one hell of a start!

Honestly - if you didn't do another thing on this it would still be amazing...

01 January 2010, 07:38 PM
Now that is an interesting mix of leftovers. what an incredible illustration.

best of luck

01 January 2010, 07:43 PM
Wow! This looks awesome! I can't wait to see more.

01 January 2010, 01:33 PM
Yakonsuke: Thx buddy, looking forward to your entry as well. Hm, London .... Nice!
I should give you a ring when i´m there in May. How about that?

Yeah, that'd be fantastic. Just give me a call when your here in Lon... wait , London? In fact I'm not in London ... :D
Dundee is a *bit* further north, but you're welcome any time, mate!

01 January 2010, 11:32 AM (

Took a day off yesterday to work on the kitchen concept. First thing in mind was of course the famous atomc-kitchen area. Don´t know where this will lead, next thing to do is definitely working on the colorthumbs.

01 January 2010, 11:36 AM
very cool movie poster. Funny idea.

01 January 2010, 11:39 AM
Hey you guys, thanks so much for the kind words. In case i ruin it all by replacing the idea (well, for now) they can´t take that away from me *haha*
This supposed to be kind of Reynold-Brownish in the end with colors and all. The stills in there are just stand-ins.

Russel-Nash, thx, good luck to you too. I see you´re making good progress with your entry. Way to go, pal.

AJ, thank you. You have a chunk of good ideas there.

Lightsouvereign, thanks for passing by. I like your approach as well.

Antropus, no no, YOURS is awesome. Thanks a million.

yakonsuke, duh, well close but no cigar, i wonder how i mixed it up with London. Anyway, will have close eye on your thread.

01 January 2010, 11:59 AM
Nice concept painting, it captures a 50s mood really well. I especially like the details that are starting to show: that the husband is still chomping on his pipe and wearing a suit and tie and the girl is in a french maid uniform really add to authenicity of the poster.

so cool and so funny, I love the idea, I'm sure you have a great chance to win.
this is exactly the spyrit of this competition, at least in my opinion...

good luck!

01 January 2010, 01:08 PM
You just won! :D so cool idea and presentation.. fresh and in style. Will just sit back and enjoy the ride thru ur process :)

01 January 2010, 03:11 PM
Very funny. Great idea I like it !

Can't wait to see all this with colors.

01 January 2010, 03:51 PM
Great concept and composition, keep it up!

01 January 2010, 04:55 PM
Nice! The Atomic Kitchen is great!

01 January 2010, 05:54 PM
My favorite work in this competition so far! Well done capturing the style man. I can't wait to see the final image in full glory. Now I need to go back and fight hard to try getting the second or third prize! Ah forget it, just give me a copy of Modo and I'll be a happy man :)

01 January 2010, 04:44 AM
Nice concept really capturing the genre

01 January 2010, 03:15 PM (

First approach on colors. More to come.

01 January 2010, 03:17 PM
Thank you for the good response everyone.Very much appreciated.

Serio, thanks for the comment.

StayFrosty, i´m glad to here the picture seems to convey this element. I wasn´t sure about that, so thanks a bunch.

elenadintroia2001, i don´t know about he spirit, but this is what i´m interested in. Thank you so much for the kind words.

NinjaA55N, i´m just trying hard to catch up to people like you or Antropus. I mean, your entry already rocks like hell.
Way to go, my friend.

LucasLicata and brownsljr, thanks a ton and for droping in.

Antropus, yeah, right. But thanks anyway, coming from you this is great to hear. Being in the jury for two times i learned that there is no such thing as a predictable outcome. Which is a good thing, just do your thing, if it takes a prize: Great.
If not you had a good time and a nice sample for your portfolio. Not a bad deal imO.
Oh,btw, please backup a little modo-copy for me, will you? :scream:

01 January 2010, 03:55 PM
I say 3 - but honestly they're all spot on for the theme. Can't wait to see you flesh it out :D

01 January 2010, 06:43 PM
Looking good, Torsten! #1 and #2 are cleaner and easier to read because of the darker background... but I confess that I love the cool-on-warm contrast that the explosions in #3 and #4 add. Logo-wise, I feel that #3 works the least well because it has the least contrast beween letters and their outline. I really like the bold red in #1... but if you wanted to go with the yellow letters of #2 and #4, you could dry darkening the sy behind them, perhaps making it the same purples and blues to the screen-right of the robot in #1 and #2, a color that's been covered up by the explosions in the bottom 2 options.

Anyhow, just some thoughts and ideas... Looking forward to more! (And hello to Iris!)

01 January 2010, 08:17 PM
I'd have to say #2. It is easy to read, while the explosions in sketches no. 3 and 4 take something away.. it's just too messy in my opinion, and it looks too much like todays Hollywood movies. And in #2 u have a nice vivid yellow text, which gives a great contrast to the cooler background.

01 January 2010, 01:39 AM
Beautiful stuff!

My favourite is #3. I like the way #3 and #4 break up the image. Though it does border on being a little bit busy. And perhaps a whiter yellow will help the title pop better in #3?

Also this might just be me, but the gear to the left of the robot (toaster, etc.) and the row of pics are starting to make an 'L' tetris block shape. Would be an easy fix though.

Looking good!

01 January 2010, 02:14 AM
Very cool colour scheme. I like the all yellow title, but that's just me. The can opener in the guy's hands is a nice touch.

Great layout too.

01 January 2010, 06:37 PM
hi torsten !

I´m so glad that you joined the challenge..
you did not show anything for such a long time. :/

I loved your first sketch of the atomic kitchen.
the colorthumbs are great as well of course...

two things came to my mind:
1. for me the saturated colors destroy some of the wonderful 50s feeling,
that worked so well in the value sketch. well, maybe you don´t care
and just want to have some colors, but I thought I should tell you my first thought.
2. did you use comic sans for the numbers and then stretch it ? ... ah just kidding. ;)

go on! this will be great.

01 January 2010, 11:53 AM
hey torsten, thanks for giving me a reason to not contribute in this contest! hahaha

02 February 2010, 07:38 AM
Hey Artvandeley, this is very interesting!! The color wise is also good as in the variation suits for a B-Movie poster. However, it would look more impressive perhaps by adding in some paper textures, a bit of worn out or desaturated type just to enhance it? And could you post a little bigger version of it? I would love to see the details through. Nice Work there!!

02 February 2010, 09:21 AM
They all look great but maybe one or two would be my choice.

Excellent, particularly love the guys pipe :)

02 February 2010, 10:05 AM
I'd say 2 or 3 :)
2 is easier to read, but 3 has that explosion going on, giving the picture a nice hot-and-cold contrast. The gradient on the text might also be a little more b-movie-ish.
2 might be more 50's horror again though.

02 February 2010, 05:56 PM
Wow, one of the best concepts so far in this challenge. Great idea.

Can't wait till it hits the big screen.

02 February 2010, 06:10 PM
Hey Torsten
Man, you're doing good progress... Feels like you gonna finish it this week.
I like the 2 for it's clearer layout and the contrast through the yellow headline, but I think the bot should pop a bit more out.
Curious about your next steps!

02 February 2010, 11:00 AM
Hey there!

Great idea! I think you really came up with an idea that is both graphic intense, and yet, it is 100% based on 1950's era, costumes, culture, design, and mentality! I don't believe theres any other thread in the contest that has managed to pull this off so well!

Check out this site It's a great source for some 50's references. It may even help you out for color comps!

Looking forward to see more ;)

02 February 2010, 07:47 PM (

Decided to leave the Reynold Brown-look and go strictly 50´s.

02 February 2010, 07:51 PM
Thank you so very very much for the great input (Madial, thanks a bunch for that great link. Awesome!) and sorry for being away for 3 weeks.
My mother-in-law was seriously sick and after coming out of the hospital my wife and i took care of her 24/7. She´s doing a lot better now , so the last 10 days i had a hard time catching up with my not already dropped deadlines. *phew*
( Unlike her title" mother-in-law" implies she is such a sweetheart. Never complains and all.Really inspiring….)

That being said, because of your suggestions and ideas i decided to go strictly 50´s with this project. I thought a more Reynold Brownish-approach would be great and fun to do, but thinking about it his color schemes doesn´t really nail the 50feeling that is already determined by the topic i´ve chosen.

Oh, and the next pics will be bigger, i promise. But that´s the way i work. Hey, the don´t call it "Thumbs" for no reason…..

02 February 2010, 11:52 PM
Outstanding!! I love this. Good luck.

02 February 2010, 08:14 PM
Nice to see you back on track.

I really like your entry and I am looking froward to see the final version.

02 February 2010, 12:16 AM
I'm glad your back in the game, Torsten. Thought you dropped out , cause you're drowning in work or so. Phew, lucky us - so there still a chance to see this finished! Now give us more candy!

02 February 2010, 06:17 AM
Really nice! I just love the pipe in his mouth - great touch!

02 February 2010, 10:07 AM
Great job!

02 February 2010, 08:31 PM (

First rendering in Painter. Trying to make the brushwork and colors 50ish ....well,sort of.

02 February 2010, 08:46 PM
That's looking nice, Torsten. My goal was to try to do the same thing with mine as well, really flatten it out. (Although my composition features too many layered characters to be ideal for that sort of thing.) Nice work, though!

02 February 2010, 09:30 PM
Very nice, definately getting the 50's feel in there, lovely mix of colours.

02 February 2010, 03:37 AM
Really amazing, looks very authentic! :applause:

02 February 2010, 01:55 PM (

Reworking the background, colors and layout.

02 February 2010, 02:14 PM
This one looks really authentic. Good job.

02 February 2010, 06:27 PM
Hey Torsten,

Great concept, like a lot the idea, totally 50´s B-Movie.
The poster style looks awesome, cool composition and colors.

Superb work. Waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

02 February 2010, 08:14 PM
Hey dude!
You made excellent choices: Subject, characters, layout, colors ... Eveything is cool! It appears that you have traveled in time to make this poster. Excellent!

02 February 2010, 01:14 PM
Thank so much for the kind replies! Really appreciate it.

Freelah, as a matter of fact i was watching an episode of "timetunnel" on my other monitor while working on it. So in a way i guess you´re right :-)

Ferx, i´m afraid those updates have to wait until i´m back from vacation in 2 weeks. But then i have to hurry up to get all those ducks in a row.

02 February 2010, 02:13 PM
i´m afraid those updates have to wait until i´m back from vacation in 2 weeks

Torsten, you do realize that the deadline is in 15 days from now, right? :)
Anyhow, not like you have a lot to do left - some typesetting and some b&w photos (which could be dropped in an emergency.) Nice work!

02 February 2010, 03:03 PM
Hey Michael, yeah, i know.
But frankly, i always thought this counter must be wrong because on the "Instructions" panel of the challenge they clearly stated the 19th of march as deadline. CG.jpg

But anyway, one way or the other i will finish this. Thanks for dropping in.

03 March 2010, 05:11 PM
Super! Wie gewohnt von dir! Aber Attack of the leftovers war ja wohl nicht zu toppen, haha! :D Schade, dass du du Idee nicht weiter verfolgt hast!

03 March 2010, 06:24 PM
I love the style, execution and content. Just wonderfully fun.

03 March 2010, 11:08 AM
I love the whole thing, it's really captured the essence of a classic b-movie too :)

03 March 2010, 06:20 PM
Holy ! Awesome rendering on the robot and boobs ! ( sorry those are the two parts that pops out right now at me !) . Great stuff , though I would actually think the ladies of that time tend to had fuller faces ? Like one of your awesome piece in your port folio . But mayb that's the look you are going for for. Oh yah I think the bloom behind the robot is just perfectly done !

03 March 2010, 06:31 PM
Looking great - I really has a nice 50's style to it - Bravo!

03 March 2010, 07:52 PM
This looks great so far. It has that traditional gouache painted feel.
Your painting skills are commendable.
Good luck.

03 March 2010, 11:57 AM (

This is some more stuff to finish this

03 March 2010, 11:58 AM
Thanks for the kind comments. I feel bad, because it turned out that coming from my vacations there was already so much work waiting for me, i didn´t have the time to work on this any more. However i managed to get this day off in order to finish this at least in a decent way....
11 hours to go...*phew*

03 March 2010, 12:26 PM
go...go...yes, you can!

03 March 2010, 10:38 PM
I thought your piece really captured the feel for this contest. I can't tell if you made it under the deadline or not but I hope so.

03 March 2010, 01:32 AM (

Rise of the atomic kitchen 3D

The topic of B movies immediately made me think of the 1950?s and Jack Arnold films like "It Came From Outer Space". Although the future has turned out differently than portrayed in such science fiction classics, the evolved image of women itself tells us that progress isn?t necessarily measured by the number of rocket ships we use to drive to work (though I wouldn?t mind owning one myself).
I had a blast raising this era of the atomic kitchen appliance back from the dead.

Software used: Photoshop

Pleas note: This is a Stereo pair in "cross eyed" format. By crossing your eyes you "fuse" the pair of images into a stereo view. Some people ( like me) tend to reverse layers, in this case download the reversed version

Excellent work - Best wishes

Irawan and mdmodeler, thanks a bunch, you guys really helped me to stay focused on finshing this.

SideAche, thanks! Likewise, best wishes to you as well.

Still i´m sorry i didn´t find the time to participate more in this contest or even had more time to work on, but that´s the way it is sometimes, i guess. Anyway, was fun doing it and on Monday I´ll order a chunk of 3D-Postcards of this baby. At least i will have a nice giveaway :D

Thanks again everybody and good luck everyone with the judging

Good luck,

03 March 2010, 05:46 AM
Great period styling, Torsten, really authentic looking! Love the use of colors! I'm glad you posted the single large image: I can't cross my eyes enough to see the stereo version. But congrats on finishing, and best of luck!

03 March 2010, 08:47 AM
If you tend to reverse layers (like some people, including me, do). It's very strange.

Do you use a stereoscopic software to creat the two views? Ou you modified the perspective with your 2d software?

I am crossing my eyes with facility and your picture is very funny !

Good luck!

03 March 2010, 07:25 PM
just great Torsten, really nailed the b-movie flair with this one :)

i think that doing a b-movie poster was a very good choice for this contest and your chances to win are pretty good

nur noch eins: würde sich 'where can a woman turn to when...' nicht korrekter anhören? ich weiss es jetzt nicht hundert prozent sicher, nur so ein gefühl.

viele grüsse

03 March 2010, 08:47 PM
Love it, very authentic, colours are spot on. The guy in the corner is too funny! Good luck, I hope this wins a prize.

03 March 2010, 08:54 PM
That's fantastic and on the money. Great job!

03 March 2010, 01:22 AM
Torsten - By the stars of Gardak you have captured the essence of the silly earthlings and this thing they call B-movies. As a Transformer myself, it is refreshing to see how you captured our early operating system and machines we transformed. You really document our early evolution on this planet well. You have our gratitude.

Cubiabus Prime Protector of Cubicles.

03 March 2010, 03:37 AM
This is the best entry so far for me! While there are some really great awesome artistes out there, but they dint seem to get the theme for me or capture the cheesy-ness that we just love bout the b movies!

03 March 2010, 06:14 AM
Hey goodluck in this comp, I like your final image

03 March 2010, 06:28 PM
Wonderful job you did. You resurrected the 50s spirit. I really like the play you did between the flying saucers on top and the dishes on the floor. Very clever. Excellent! :applause:

03 March 2010, 12:25 PM
Im so glad u've managed to finish this piece. Its truly awesome, from the idea to the final execution of it. And I admire how u caught the whole retro look with ur style.. brush work is amazing. Good luck with the judging and hope to see u in the next challenge as well :)

03 March 2010, 01:07 PM
Haha you're so crazy... a fantastic image in every aspect and a stereoscopic version of it makes this piece a pure win. And the guy in the lower right corner is hilarious ! All the best, mate!

03 March 2010, 01:13 PM
Very well done!

03 March 2010, 08:57 AM
brilliant! You have the old poster look absolutely spot on! The characters are really funny, and just lots of amusing little details. Really really good!

03 March 2010, 03:11 AM
Hey Torsten,

Awesome image. Really great retro style on your concept. The robot design is simply amazing. Great details and mood.
Congratulations for this great artwork! Good luck and time for a well deserved cold beer :D Cheers!!
