Looking forward to what you come up with.

01-21-2010, 09:44 AM
Hey buddy, isnīt that topic tailor-made for you? Iīm sure, this will be another great entry!
Have fun!

01-26-2010, 12:52 PM
Hey fellas- Thanks for encouragement. I think this will be great fun! :D

01-26-2010, 01:13 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1264511581_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1264511581_medium.jpg)

1. The first idea I had - A geek build a kind of teleporter and ported himself to venus where a giant robot army was about to attack the venus' amazons. So he found himself right in the middle of this war not sure what side to choose - the robots cause he's a geek or the amazons to finally get laid once in his life.

2. Then the idea turned into one simple 'Night of the living Geek' theme.
Very simple plot, and easy to convey into an image. So I'll stick to that.
Also made a quick and dirty colorthumb for the rough diection where to go. Looks like a lavalamp parade, but it works for me. :D
For the image itself I had in mind to have a gradial transformation of the geek. In the back the silhouette seem to represent real zombies or something dangerous but as it goes to the foreground the actual geeks get recognizable. Try to get in some funny ideas like typical computerstuff as weapons for example. Need to gather some more ideas for that.

01-26-2010, 01:53 PM
Wow ! <Nice sketches !
I am a bit jealous ! you seem to have drawing habilities more than I !

01-26-2010, 10:14 PM
Hi Jakob!
the sketches are looking sweet, I feel like the 1st concept is a bit more B-movie than the 2nd, but the 2nd is much more original, so good luck with it! :scream:

01-27-2010, 11:23 AM
Hey Jakob, the colorthumb is just beautiful, very promising. I wouldnīt worry about the idea being simple, having a simple idea and wrap a movie around that is a main part what a B-Movie is made of, isnīt it? Cool characters too

02-01-2010, 01:02 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1265029378_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1265029378_medium.jpg)

Ok - here is the first step in my progress.
Left- an unfinished sketch. the backgroundcharacters are all just placeholder. only the guy in the focus is nearly done.

Right- a rough tonal sketch to see how the sketch works . I'm aware of the crappy composition. :)

A good base to start off!

02-01-2010, 01:08 PM
gpepper: Hehe, nah they aren't that good, but thanks!

elmasfeo: hey Fernando, thanks man! Yeah I stick to that concept. I'm really looking forward to do a lot of characters after the work I'm doing at the company.

art: Yeah thanks, Torsten! No I don't worry about the simplicity of the idea- rather was one reason to go for that idea! but I'm still not in the groove... hmmm

Thanks chaps.
C & C always welcome!

02-01-2010, 01:58 PM
Just great! Very good sketch!
I like the concept and also you can use my avatar as reference. he-he-he

02-01-2010, 02:15 PM
Great Idea!

Hike those pants up a bit more on the main guy maybe.

02-01-2010, 03:01 PM
Hi Jakob

That just made me laugh.

Brilliantly simple idea.

Keep it simple - I'm sure it will be fantastic.

02-01-2010, 03:10 PM
Great idea and very nice sketch

02-01-2010, 03:34 PM
This looks very good.
I like this styles.

02-01-2010, 05:09 PM
Peleng: puh thanks for that offer, saves me some work!

hmm, some overlay colors, and it's done... what do you think guys? :D

Thanks for the comments!

02-01-2010, 09:48 PM
Ha-ha! You already is a winner!!! :applause:

02-02-2010, 12:33 AM
Haha that made my day! :D

02-02-2010, 10:51 AM
Hey there! LOLOLOL!!

great stuff you got there! really comic idea, and very well put into an illustration.

It reminds a bit of Kevin from sincity played by Elijah Wood. You could have them hold some usb pen's and why not make the leader bill gates? ;)

02-02-2010, 03:51 PM
Awesome, I like the theme...I like what you've done with the character on the left so far. Will be fun seeing how this unfolds. Keep it up!

02-02-2010, 05:51 PM
Great sketches and cool idea ^^

02-03-2010, 12:47 PM

Some more characters, and some minor changes on the center one.

Will improve the overlapping of the guys later. At this point I just develop the content.

02-03-2010, 12:57 PM
JayMackay, Pegahoul, SaphireS, Jakyll, RaVirr, PELENG : Thanks guys! :)

Madail: Cheers! bill Gates would fit into that bunch , yes :D ... but it's not intended to depict specific persons, but a whole lifestyle.

PixelAce: Thanks man, I'll try to keep it simple! I already got rid of some too complicated ideas.

grumposaur: yeah you were right and I pulled the pants a bit up in this update. Thank you!

02-03-2010, 01:09 PM
I love these nerd's poses. Great expression!

02-08-2010, 10:34 PM
Awesome concept! The first one to really make me laugh. I think the pixel font is dead on!
The only thing is, how did you get the picture of my high school chess club, to derive your characters from? LOL (kidding)

Good luck!

02-09-2010, 09:05 AM
frightening characters! hahaha!!
good luck!

02-09-2010, 12:10 PM
frightening, genius stuff! "night of the living geeks" - as i read that, i laughed out really loud during classes. the tutors face was like: :surprised

this is gonna be my new favourite! :buttrock:

02-09-2010, 12:44 PM
LOL awesome sketches so far, cant wait to see this develop :)

02-09-2010, 12:53 PM
Brilliant concept & your sketches so far are outstanding.

*subscribe* :D

02-09-2010, 05:41 PM
haha, browndljr & Bran ! Made me laugh.

serio, browndljr, Arne, Bran, HeadSmell, AJ - thanks guys! :D I'm glad you like it. Next update will come this week. I've almost finished the whole drawing. Just a few details left .

02-10-2010, 12:57 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1265806634_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1265806634_medium.jpg)

Well here we go with some thoughts on the title placement.
I like no.1 for it's "in-the-face-ness" but has to get the value right , so it doesn't distract the illustration part. But this one probably conveys best the spirit of the topic.
I like No.2 as well... but maybe too simple.
No. 3 is way too simple and standard, imho.

But let me know your thoughts on this.

02-10-2010, 01:00 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1265806845_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1265806845_medium.jpg)

And the drawing, which is quite final, as I'm pretty satisfied with it.
There is only some stuff missing in the back ( like few more zombieheads) , and on the ground(maybe some stuff the victims dropped), which I will do on the fly while I render the whole piece.

02-10-2010, 01:11 PM
But let me know your thoughts on this.I really prefer the first treatment. Even though the title is huge, it doesn't detract from the artwork IMO.

02-10-2010, 01:47 PM
will there be a monochrome version on vhs, too? :D

this is evolving great!

02-10-2010, 06:27 PM
haha, this is looking great, I love the expression of the guy on the floor... the only thing I could crit is that the face of the fat guy with the portable tv looks a bit strange for me, but I can't tell exactly why... or it might be my personal taste, maybe he's too ugly for me, heheh...
about the layouts, I think I prefer the 1st one too... or the 2nd
keep up the good work!! :bounce:

02-13-2010, 04:11 PM
Overall it is looking really good, but I have two really small things to crit.
First, the right hand of the kneeing character between the legs of the main character looks a little bit misplaced. In my opinion the hand should be somewhere behind the left leg of the main character.
Second, I would equalise the zone where the right foot of the main charcter hits the hand of the lying character and the other foot.
But this is just nitpicking :D

02-15-2010, 12:52 PM
AJ: Even though I didn't go for it in the next update, It's still in the game... but I'm still not sure about that placement... thanks for your opinion!

Bran: thanks man :)

elmasfeo: Yeah, I feel the same about the tv guy . Will put some additional work in that guy . Thank you!

ocin-r: Thanks for the critics! I will peek into this as I progress!

02-15-2010, 12:58 PM

Here's a small preview of where it's most likely going.

02-15-2010, 01:02 PM
Man, that is so cool, really love the geeks have this Zombie like postures, works soooo well lol, what a great idea.

02-15-2010, 01:17 PM
super cool. You can work out some of the details now... like star wars t-shirts also I think one of the geek could be a little bit fatter. Just a stereotype but could add variety to the image. But overall I love it.

02-15-2010, 02:58 PM
Just had to say , i love this one.

my 2 cents about the tile, might be stupid, but feel free to ignore them.

- pixelated blood dripping from the title.
- some sort of pacmen with teeth replacing the "e" in geek.

Again , awesome entry. Feel free to ignore my input.

02-15-2010, 03:14 PM
HA HA HA HA HA!!! FUNNY :applause:
Nerd Rules!!!:buttrock:

Good Luck Man!!!

02-15-2010, 06:07 PM
Nice concept and execution so far, Jakob. I love the color palette. Is the space below the logo going to be for cast names and credits? Just one suggestion: Given the font you're using for the tagline at the top, what about a DOS-like command prompt in front of it? :D
Good luck with the rest!

02-15-2010, 07:02 PM
I like your style and concept :)

02-17-2010, 09:18 AM

A quick update. Some words and replies later that day :)

02-17-2010, 01:34 PM
What can I say, just great!
Characters and their expressions are very well done!
Wonderfull! :applause:

02-17-2010, 05:07 PM
Nice work!

02-17-2010, 05:23 PM
Fabulous idea and I love the way this is shaping up Jakob. Brilliant stuff.

02-17-2010, 06:48 PM
Now I got some spare time to write.
Nickillus , Andrei-tR, PELENG, lauranonce, walrus, najjaci , Beelzebutz, serio, Paperboy: First of all, thank you guys for c&c! very appreciated!

serio: Thank you man, In fact there is a fatter guy and he's waering a star wars tshirt :D . but that's barely readable in the drawing. Anyways will try to point that out later on.

Beelzebutz: Also thanks to you, Beelzebutz! The ideas aren't stupid at all. Actually I was thinking about pixelblood dripping from the title as well :D I'll keep that in mind , when I get to the title part . But I want to finish the illustration first and put the title with all it's fancy details after that.

walrus: Thanks for the suggestions , Walrus! Yeah the DOS command is a good idea, will see how this looks, but as the whole title work in the end. Actually the title isn't final in that step. Just wanted to put it in to show the color pallette. But as mentioned will try some different places in the end. And will also put some names and credits under it all, yes. but haven't thought about that yet.

Cheers Guys

02-17-2010, 07:04 PM
Man! Looking better and better. I like the tonal qualities of the wash.

All that is missing now is the torn bloodied football jersey stuck to one of their shoes! LOL

02-18-2010, 02:00 PM
So cool concept and great color choice :)
Can't wait to see your next update!

02-19-2010, 08:08 PM
Great idea :) On the last wip, the colors and the mood of whole scene are really nice..

02-19-2010, 08:29 PM
This is the funnies entry that I've seen. Nice work bro :applause:

02-19-2010, 10:32 PM
that crack me up

02-19-2010, 10:36 PM
It will be powerful image...Keep going.;)

02-20-2010, 12:18 AM
Man, this is looking awesome! I love the characters but the lighting and color palette are something special already. Keep it up!

02-21-2010, 09:43 PM
Haha, i absolutely love it.
Nothing to criticize, way to go, pal.

02-22-2010, 02:47 AM
This is lookin sweet! Following from the beginning. Really like what you're doing

02-23-2010, 11:17 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1266967064_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1266967064_medium.jpg)

A quite big step in the progress, but still a lot to do, as I'm not that happy with the shading in most places.

02-23-2010, 11:32 PM
Gopez: Cool thanks!

artvandeley: There you are! Thanks mate, glad you like it!

Antropus: Hey Kris, great to hear that from you! Thanks!

RaVirr:  I'll try!

bdbros: :D

AlexaSharlOt: Thanks you :)

Ros1: Thanks man!

Eskarina: Thank you, hope you like this update as well !

browndljr: haha yeah- thanks mate!

Thank you all!

02-24-2010, 03:39 AM
Looking really cool man!

02-24-2010, 11:09 AM
This is going to be awesome!

02-24-2010, 12:51 PM
Hi, superbe idea ! I love the concept and how you illustrate it.
so many small funny details (please, will you add more ? ;) )

02-24-2010, 12:54 PM
Each Geek has such a great pose and the detailing is absolutely awesome, this is looking sweeter and sweeter!!

02-24-2010, 01:04 PM
this is looking really awesome. i would love to see those black silouets of geeks with glowing withe glasses like in one of your first sketches, it looked wery atmospheric and could make a great composition with these detailed ones in the foreground

02-28-2010, 12:33 AM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1267317180_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1267317180_medium.jpg)

Not much new to see, just some more definition and renderwork.

Thanks for the nice words you all!

FeD- yeah I will! Promise for the next update- for this only 1 star trek badge on the right guys chest. ^^

kybel- oh yes will keep that idea from the early sketch for sure!

02-28-2010, 12:47 AM
great progress! keep on doing what you're doing!

02-28-2010, 03:50 AM
Man I love all the color pallet for this.:arteest:

My only suggestion is that one of the geeks could have an inhalar. The guy on the fare right has his fingers position perfectly :)

02-28-2010, 01:32 PM
Wow, this is getting better and better. Those expressions are priceless

I know itīs tempting , but donīt loose your emphasis on the main character by adding too much equally important details to the other. I guess it would help to render the other geeks more shapelike with a rimlight from the back, maybe even with volumetric lighteffects.
I know thatīs shallow , but itīs supposed to be a B-movie, isnīt it?

Oh, and the screaming guy on the left, laying on the ground is already too detailed and therefore kind of distracting imO.

02-28-2010, 01:50 PM
This is really starting to take shape! Good concept.

03-01-2010, 12:09 AM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1267402161_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1267402161_medium.jpg)

Almost done I think. Just need to fool around with some fonts and maybe more text like credits or so. Will see tommorrow.
But I guess it's enough for the illustrationpart, isn't it?

03-01-2010, 12:23 AM
iatriki: Thanks! I hope doing what I do is enough!

HeadSmell: ... hmm weird nickname.. anyways thank you for the great suggestion! I stuck one to the belt of the maingeek. :D

artvandeley: Thank you Torsten! Yeah you're definitely right... that's what Steven told me as well. So I faced this problem in this update. I think it's way better now, but maybe still not the best solution.
I also went for the volumetric light and drew the whole bunch back. Thank you for the great advice!

webhead: Thanks man! :)

btw. I will shoot a sharper photo of the scratchy paper texture tommorrow.

03-01-2010, 03:04 AM
u give me smile fun project idea

03-01-2010, 05:36 AM
haha this is totally awesome. great idea and execution. love it!

03-01-2010, 08:26 AM
hahahaahha.. this is so great. haha. very funny.

03-01-2010, 08:33 AM
WINNER! The idea is incredible! Well executed.

03-01-2010, 05:13 PM
Awesome stuff :buttrock:

03-01-2010, 05:25 PM

03-01-2010, 05:57 PM
Great illustration! I love it :) I was thinking that you could maybe take a few "pixels" out from the illustration itself to show that the formating process has already begun... I hope that you know what I mean :) You could do the same thing with the title just to integrate it a bit more with the illustration.
Just a little idea for you to consider :)

Great job!

03-01-2010, 06:14 PM
I love the atmosphere you created here. Nice colours.
And the characters are super.

03-02-2010, 12:55 AM

Here we go with the title and other texts part.
I think I need a bit help by english native speakers ( or better speakers than I am )... 'bad posture' sounds kinda stiff to me in that row, any suggestions what could sound better? Or is it just me who isn't used to this term? I don't know.
And some additional words to fill the spaces would be nice I guess. Feel free to throw some in! I'd be grateful!

Thanks chaps!

03-02-2010, 12:59 AM
JUDZIGN, big-whoop, rasmusW, BrettSinclair, HeadSmell, browndljr, lordbiernac , mickarrow - Thank you guys!

lordbiernac: Thank you for the suggestion! But I think it'll take some time to see how this looks and to get it right, but I need to finish that piece till tommorrow, cause from wednesday I can't work on it anymore for some time, also I'm not sure if I want to get too much into that pixelstuff.

03-02-2010, 01:54 AM
lordbiernac: Thank you for the suggestion! But I think it'll take some time to see how this looks and to get it right, but I need to finish that piece till tommorrow, cause from wednesday I can't work on it anymore for some time, also I'm not sure if I want to get too much into that pixelstuff.

Sure :) That's your playground ;)
Good luck!

03-02-2010, 08:22 AM
First off, amazin piece man! Been keeping an eye on this since the beggining. I love how you have translated the concept. The reason I'm posting is because of the spelling of leathal (I think it would be more correct, "lethal"). Even so, I'm not sure about that term in this context; it doesn't do anything for me. "Bad posture" is totally correct, and IMO, totally aplicable to the piece.

You could try other (cool sounding) geek related terms like:

- asmathic
- hypermetropic
- lactose intolerant

Just some ideas to throw around, but the important part, is already achieved. Awesome work!

03-02-2010, 08:31 AM
Awesome text dude!! :D The poster details are a really nice finish and fit so well with the main poster image. Really nice work mate!!

03-02-2010, 10:40 AM
Thanks guys!

Thank you for the help, Andrew!
Lethal.. argh, will fix that.
Your suggested terms are awesome! Haven't thought of such, but will replace my flat words by yours!
Lactose intolerant... hilarious for itself... :D

03-02-2010, 12:37 PM

03-02-2010, 03:45 PM
Hey man !
This looks really damn good!:buttrock:

03-02-2010, 06:48 PM
hahha very good idea ~!! and great painting so far

03-02-2010, 07:30 PM
this turned out great Jakob! really good job, ...I liked seeing this one progress, congratulations for finishing!

03-02-2010, 11:00 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1267570800_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/26/18865/18865_1267570800_medium.jpg)

Well I think that's it. If there are no further great suggestions I'd say it's finished.
As mentioned I can't touch it the next few days, So I will review this before deadline and decide if I do some final touches or corrections.

Story/Description/whatsoever will follow!

03-02-2010, 11:04 PM
Thank you all for the support, guys! I'm really grateful to hear what you think and I'm glad I could make some of you laugh!
See you in a couple of days!

Thanks :)

03-03-2010, 12:42 AM
Hilarious!:applause:I want a poster!

One comment though: The first time I read it, I read "Night of the living GEER" and I went like "what the ****? Doesnīt it supposed to say... wait a minute.... is that a... okay, NOW I see... K looks ckckonfusing" (Maybe itīs just me and in that case: never mind:thumbsup:)

03-03-2010, 01:46 AM
Hey! Its very stylish and funny. Excellent!

03-03-2010, 02:54 PM
I was checking out all entries, but this one really caught my attention at first sight, it's fun!! excellent! congrats!!! :bounce:

03-03-2010, 03:07 PM
The facial expressions and poses are brilliant! Itīs also one of the coolest taglines I have seen so far :D

03-03-2010, 07:33 PM
Supercool! Rocks Yako! Honorable Mention to go!

03-03-2010, 09:25 PM
Love this one! By the way...'Asmathic'...shouldn't that be 'Asthmatic'? Great stuff inspite of the spelling:thumbsup:

03-03-2010, 10:13 PM
hey i love this. very nice. haven't read all the posts so it might have been mentioned, but, i think the title should be geeks. more scary to think there might be like an army of them out there!
and you have more than one geek in the image.
my 1 crit but i hate to crit such good work. absolutely spot on.

Really nice atmospheric effects going on! Also like the weathering around the sides and such...cool stuff!

03-04-2010, 08:16 AM
i think the title should be geeks. more scary to think there might be like an army of them out there!
Yea but... the movies aren't called the "night of the living deads"

Awesome stuff yakonusuke! My favorite id the guy grabbing the jock :D

03-04-2010, 02:28 PM
nicely done, one of my favorites till now ... the concept served a lot to make it unique

great work again dude :)

Really lovely work, Jakob. Just a terrific job setting up a creepy atmosphere. The mist, the lighting, the cool colors all work together really well! I have no problem with the title, but think that a bit of a drop shadow on the bottom text ("C: They came to format all") like what you have on the main title (only smaller) would really help that to pop a little instead of blending in with the background. But artwise: just perfect!

03-04-2010, 03:37 PM
Love it! Looking really good and funny too.

03-04-2010, 05:03 PM

With the golden age of computer people started to disappear. Only a few in the beginning but increasingly more and more. Nobody knew what happend to them.
But now they are back!
Risen from the dark basements they came to format all.

It's the night of the living Geek!

A shocking horror-comedy you would die for to watch directed by Jakob Eirich.

PeterPuppet (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=152227): Thank you! Well I think that's a minor thing with the "K". If there has been many guys who thought this way, I would have changed that.

chipstick (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=124707): Thanks for the suggestion! But I personally liked 'Geek' from the beginning and it's closer to the original movie title I'm referring to.

SideAche (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=68272): :)

JesseNelson (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=87038): Thank you. But I decided to draw them back a bit, as they distracted the image a lot, imo.

All done, excellent! Love those characters and the overall wet, misty look tends to emphasise their geekishness. The guy on the right reminds me of a character you probably won't have heard of - Les from Vic Reeves' Big Night out, many years ago, used to crack me up.
