Latest Update: Concept / pre-visualization: The Night of the Living Dead Mariachis
01 January 2010, 11:21 AM
At this moment in time, I’m actually trying to finish off a personal project of mine, so for the next month this is going to be in a “pre-production” phase. I’ll actually have some time at work for drawing, so I’m going to try and get everything sussed out on paper so that when the 22nd of February comes around, I’ll be ready to dive into the nitty-gritty and will have almost a whole month to complete the project.
For the time being, I want to get some of my initial ideas written down.
Words that spring to mind relating to B-Movies: Corny, Kitsch, Aliens, Mutants, Zombies, Ed Wood, George Romero, Black and White, Screaming ladies, Abduction, Invasion, Survival, etc…
Films that I can relate to:
-“Plan 9 from outer space”, directed by Ed Wood
-“Ed Wood”, directed by Tim Burton
-“Night of the living dead”, by George Romero
-“Invasion of the Body Snatchers”, directed by Son Siegel
-“Planet Terror” (and especially the false trailers), by Robert Rodriguez
I’m starting to think about what I’d like to do. I’m thinking probably somewhere along the line of “Invasion of the mutant zombies from space”. I want to go with something kitsch, fun, probably comic style poster, with large corny text. I would like to set a big horde of the things running and causing havoc amongst the set.

Started thinking about what kind of “monster” we will be up against in our story.
I want to go with a “cartoony” / “cuddly” type of image, but with the obvious twist that this genre grants. I’m thinking a horde of something, hundreds of them, all over the place. At first, I’d thought that “Mutant Zombies” that eat plants would be cool (something similar to Tofu, the Vegan Zombie)… but after looking through some ideas, I’m thinking that I like the idea of a plant invasion (much like the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”) but more aggressive. I’m looking for a SD (super deformed) style monster, little minions, like freezers “saibamen” in Dragon Ball. Hundreds of them identical, and their master, a huge carnivorous plant, towering above them all. He spawned them all, and he is their master. Need to star thinking about what their purpose on earth is…

yeh i'm trying to decide whether to go realistic or cartoony.....
would be interesting to see a sackboy/saibamen cross...lol

I like the horde idea. There is something utterly disturbing about something that is benign or even appealling, but in such large numbers as to be terrifying.

I’ve been thinking about my idea now since yesterday, and it’s starting to settle. For the time being, I’ve come up with a temporary title for my piece to help set the mood:
-“The revenge of the bloodsucking turnipheads”
What’s the story? As far as I’ve got figured out, they’ve slowly been planning their revenge against us. Years and years of abuse are about to send the turnipheads on a blood sucking frenzy. Hordes of them are slowly causing panic amongst the human population. Our story starts on a farm in Iowa, the largest turnip crop in all of the US. Much like the living dead, they pull themselves out of the ground and walk the earth running after anything that moves.
What’s the image? I’m still figuring out the details, but the image I have in my head is a landscape, with a farmhouse in the background. The sun is setting, the sky is blood red. The chickens sense movement and start panicking. The earth moves, and one by one, the turnipheads pull themselves out of the ground, running towards the camera, and after the chickens. It’s the beginning of the end.
What do I need? As I have limited time to spend on this, I don’t want to go with something too ambitious, so I have to think what I can do with the time I have. I’ll be doing the image with Maya and Photoshop, so I’ll need the following:
-Model and texture a Barn
-Model and rig a chicken
-Model and rig a turniphead
I’ll be using the same turniphead for the “horde” (don’t know how many I’ll be using yet) and I’ll modify certain details to separate them from one another. At the moment, I don’t think I’m being over ambitious.

I'll hopefully post some "sketches" tomorrow. For the time being, I've done a quick photosketch to more or less start thinking about my main character. The body is going to be very plant like. All images are from google search (the body is Sackboy, from Little Big Planet).

aww, thats creepy-cute :p
fit for bouth a comedy and a semi-horror b-movie

I love it, it's a bit of an homage to attack of the killer tomoatos! You should definitely consider making a 3d model of it to rough out the crowd/horde. Duplicating it and placing it semi randomly is very easy to do with scripts. Then you can go through and place your hero turnipheads.

@LadyMedusa: thanks for the comment! I'm aiming for something cartoonish, I want it to be cute n' gorey (if that's possible).
@csmallfield: thanks for pointing out the "attack of the killer tomatoes" similarity. Wouldn't have remembered and probably wouldn't have come accross this interesting looking mouth. Might try it out on my turnipheads.

Well, I'm afraid I can't draw to save my life. I try to think how I'm going to model it out in 3D, and what it is I need and where, and then try and put it in pencil. Not sure if this is the body I want yet, I've still got to think about it some more, but I wanted to throw some ideas out there. I was looking for something simple, and I think I've already gone a bit over the top.

So, it seems there's going to be a slight change in direction. Wasn't too keen on the way things were turning out with my previous idea, and I've been milling on the subject for the last few days... totally dry. Then all of a sudden, I get home from work last night and my girlfriend's watching a documentary on TV about Spaniards living in Mexico. So I had my tea in front of the TV, watching Mariachis, the Day of the Dead, etc... really really cool.
Wake up this morning, and out of the blue, "Night of the living dead Mariachis". It suits my needs regarding the "horde" of creatures pulling themselves out of the ground, and for some time now I've been thinking of doing something in a Mexican style, so here I have the perfect chance.
Ehem (*cough *cough).. the story then... basically, it's "Plan 9 from outer space", in Mexico. A band of Mariachis, buried beneath a Hacienda in Jalisco, are suddenly brought to life when a race of vindictive aliens plan to destroy the earth by setting the dead upon us. It's gonna be fun. I'll post some more reference pics as soon as I get the chance.

Lol Mariachi zombies. Too funny. Would be cool if they had instruments made of body parts. I could just see one strumming away at a leg while another is rat tat tatting on a skull.

I'm still thinking about this idea, and I've been gathering some reference pics (a small selection here). I really like this idea and I'm definately going with this come what may. I've started thinking about what I'm going to portray in the final piece. I'm going to have one Mariachi climbing out of the well porting maracas; another one climbing up the wall after a cat (his rotten sombrero fallen on the floor); one coming at the camera directly with a guitar (held as an axe); one pulling himself out of the floor (will have to study how I'm going to achieve this technically), etc... I'll try and come up with some sort of sketch tommorow.
Thanks OZ, agruberdesign and RageOfAges for the comments. I'm starting to feel really comfortable with this idea. Lets just hope I can manage to make something out of it.

Cool concept for sure! Like a lot the idea of undead maricahis, hahahaha great!! You can find a lot of references on "Día de Muertos" subject. Is a really nice concept to put the action on an old "hacienda". In mexico many terror legends are located in "haciendas". :D
Good luck and looking forward for more updates. Cheers!! with tequila !! :D

Thanks ever so much guys for the kind comments (haven't really done much yet). I've been trying to polish off a couple of pieces of work before I dedicate all my time to this. This (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=132&t=849856) is what I've been doing recently, and I've got another one to do before I go on holiday for a week. After that, I'll have a full month to dedicate to this and I hope I'll get it finished in time. In the meanwhile, just looking at all the work you guys come up with is enough to make this worthwhile.
CGS challenges rock! :buttrock: Good luck to everyone!

I am torn, the undead mariachis are very cool but the photos of vegetable were also cool. I guess the Mariachi are the best. Are you going for a poster/vertical format or more like a horizontal clip from a movie scene?
