The best way to texture a hand is usually just using two planar projections - one from the top, and one from the bottom.
Just select the polys on top, and do a planar unwrap, and do the same for the pixels on the bottom. Then you can just adjust your texture to fit it or paint a new texture using the unwrap UV co-ordinates :)
