Craig Mullins is a god. I've enjoyed his work while playing countless hours of the Marathon Trilogy before I even knew who he was, and I've been blown away at all his stuff since.

It must be a very cool way to earn a living. Are his pix used for preVis or backgrounds?

I knew his style seemed familiar. I was always very impressed by the art in Marathon (not to mention the music, game play, the ...nevermind. Back to the topic).
Nice to see such a great artist continue to stay busy, and work on such cool projects.

Congratulations Craig, you deserve it.
Ever since I've come across your work, I feel like I have to tell every other artist, or patron of art about you. Craig's beautiful work has been very inspirational since the first time I saw it, and I'm sure it will be the same for many artists in the future.

For anyone who isn't familiar with Craig's work...he is probably the best 2D digital artist out there. He has also been doing this for a long, long time. One of the first to do digital Matte Paintings. Some of the people I've talked to in the film industry see him as a visionary in his field. Truely an inspiration to all artist...this guy can do it all. I only hope to be as good as he someday.
Another impressive artist in the sam vain is WETA MAtte painter Dusso. Check him out to for some incredible inspiration.

This thread seemsto be turning into a site promotion thread! jeez. Lets give the man the respect he deserves!
Mr Mullins one thing I admire the most and has taught me oodles more than any book or tutorial....is your sense of lighting.
Comparable ONly to maybe Parkinson or Frazetta. Its amazing how innovative one can be when not only painting interesting themes but presenting them in dramatic "Mullins"Lighting.

I went to school (Art Center) with Craig and I sincerely wish I had a tenth of his skill with color, lighting and composition.
I vividly remember showing up to class crits with the minimum number of lame b&w sketches, then Craig shows up with twice the number of highly detailed and rendered scenes - in full color! I mean we literally had sketches all over the walls of objects only slightly more complex than shaded primitives, and Craig puts up these elaborate WW2 battle scenes with all kinds of vehicles and troops and fire and smoke, all beautifully atmospheric and with the same powerful pallets he still uses. It was beyond humbling.
It's an odd feeling to have met someone so talented during the genesis of their career. I'm proud to say how thrilled I am at being included in Expose 1, but having Craig and I in the same book seems like having Pauly Shore and Marlon Brando in the same movie.
Oh, and please buy our game in November!

This afternoon I checked out his website... he's the man behind the incredible 2d from Final Fantasy.. Never knew that. After looking through the whole site (along with a friend, oh's and ah's and "check that" 's all over the place) I just watched Final Fantasy again.
Well most of the time I just watch movies, and crit the artists, most of the time positive, but only with this movie I feel a very strong jealousy while watching.. can't help it. The movie is not flawless (nevertheless it was a breakthrough) but the 2d art is outstanding. Especially the vision the girl has (the last part where everything 's green again), and also manhattan shielded, oww
Artbot: I can imagine how you feel. When I go to college we don't listen too often to the very boring teachers, and "waste" our time with drawing. Friend of mine has a lot of talent, and makes me feel like Im-never-going-to-be-as-good-as-he-so-why-even-try
Of course we all crit the great artists with "Godlike" and "king of CG" etc, but I am not overstating myself if I say I have very much respect for this man, more than most others. Not that they ain't doing awesome work, but well... it's .. the distance between some extremely good free-lance painter and someone like Rembrand or something. You know what I mean :)

oh man thats cool.. he is the man!

LOVE the site, just added most of the pics to my rotating backgrounds =D

I wouldn't say the best, Phillip... As always with art, one shouldn't be talking about the best. You can easily take a bunch of people you would say is the lead of art, but to take one of them and consider him the best, is impossible... This is due to the fact that art is rather subjective, it is considered different by all of us.
He is one of the best though, I love his technique...
But once again, naming an artist who is the best is a problem. It would be like asking a bunch of people who was the best artist, Vincent, Picasso or Leonardo...
