View Full Version : The Sideshow- character - giantrobot

I am going to try and make this model in my (hah) spare time.

It is Frogboy, and I am hoping that his lack of clothing is ok. If not, I will try to work out something like in the top drawing. I think he is freakier naked. I wanted to use beard stubble, body hair and freckles to simulate the way frogs have a different color on top than on bottom. None of this will matter if he needs to be dressed :(

Also, I am going to go with a slightly cartoony feel, i think. Not as cartoony as the concept, but close.

Good Luck everyone.

hehe this is cool.... I would definetly make him nekid, and I doubt there will be a problem with it either  ...... like u said you would like the hair, etc. to be visible... so go for it man :)

I am only working on this in the car as i commute to work. it is the only free time i have, but it will be cool if i can pull it off.

08-26-2003, 09:43 PM
I take it your not driveing the car yourself, It would be one mean feat if you were tho :)

looks good so far, not sure on the position of the arms at the moment, but looks good for in car work in limited time

08-28-2003, 04:45 PM
starting to get to some detail. Takes a long time when you are trying to do this on your lap in the passenger seat :)

baaah888: the arms are not in their final place, but i do think they are going to be in a "non-standard" human form.

I just got that crazy REALISM 3d anatomy book in the mail. so cool. I wish it came with a dvd of spinarounds or something.

08-28-2003, 07:00 PM
Your doing all of that in the car! ... Don’t you get carsick…man I would be puking all over the place. Well anyway good work….especially for working in the car.

08-29-2003, 08:07 AM
hehe looking sweet man... keep going :buttrock:

08-29-2003, 01:36 PM
i do actually get a little sick after about a half hour...but whatever. :)
It is my only free time right now.

here is an update...his willie is in there now.

09-03-2003, 08:30 PM
I am starting to lag behind you guys. :)

ok, here is today's commute's worth. (btw, my commute is 1 hour, each way)

I am at around 2000 polys. If anyone sees anything that they think needs fixin', lemme know.

09-04-2003, 10:55 AM
lol awsome!!

I like the design, and for car work  :buttrock:

09-07-2003, 11:33 PM
very cool! Is it for realtime? you could collapse the short edges at the mirror axis for fewer polys. and make him less symmetrical, even when hes in the bindpose. why not making his anatomy slightly symmetrical?

Yup, it is for realtime. It is for the game art challenge. Once I am near finished with the model, I am going to do an assymetry pass.

As far as those small polys at the center, i am going to try and keep those in order to get that nice back muscle.

Anyone seen the Soul Calibur 2 Astaroth model? awesome.

09-09-2003, 11:40 AM
could u give us a link to that sould calibur 2 model? I am quite interested in the game characters, as im a university student whos making characters for a project which is quite similar in substance to soul calibur 2. Cheers.

09-09-2003, 11:06 PM
In the drawing you made his eyes less buggy and more sunken into the head. I like the line and subtlety(sp?) better there. Also his shoulders still look a little strange. Like his willy though! haha:p

09-10-2003, 09:35 AM
this is looking good.... can't wait to see him textured

Gonna give him an environment?

09-12-2003, 06:03 AM
Here is an update. Getting close to my poly limit though. I will gain some when i make assymetry...losing the anklet on the other leg.

I have just been looking at the game. If you beat the game with Astaroth, you "unlock" his gallery. allowing you to move the camera all around.

I am going to try and make his face as close to the drawing as possible. I am torn between "grotesque realism" and "cartoony". I was originally going for cartoony...but now i dont know. Yup, the shoulders are causing me trouble. If you look at the drawing, he has an unrealistic shape, and the shoulders are funky. It is proving difficult to achieve in 3d :(

Yeah, I really want to start texturing. I think I am close. I am thinking of an environment, consisting of one of those red redestals like in the know, that circus animals "perform" on? He also now has a ball and chain (so far...just the anklet).

09-12-2003, 07:24 AM
some small tweaks:
Less buggy eyes
smoother around eye sockets
smoother belly
more detailed weiner
more work done on shoulder

09-12-2003, 08:07 AM
Movin' along quite well. My suggestion is that you flatten out the feet more like a frog. They would complement the hands better too.

Off the subject:

I checked out your website and saw that screenshot of "Karaoke Revolution". I looks suspiciously like the screenshot of "American Idol" I saw in my Game Informer mag a few issues back. Were there legal issues or "no comment"? :)

09-12-2003, 11:34 AM
thanks for the tip, i havent really gotten to play soul calibur 2 much... actualy just plyed it twice or so.... Anyway, about your character.... going great so far, but dont u think a game character with a weiner is something of a controversy? Plus it might save some polys toward the end.... Unless youre going to change that after giving him some clothes though, in which case ill just shut up....

09-12-2003, 04:33 PM
this guy is comin along great! Love the buggy eyes!

Dont know what you mean by legal issues. Both games are pretty similar in content I guess, so I can see how similarities arise. Isnt american idol toon shaded? Also, the Karoke Revolution game actually uses a Microphone as a controller rather than button presses :)

The again, I saw that game with the woman with the weapons recently and it looked like that other game with the woman with the weapons...y'know? ;)

Heh...yeah, I dont know. When I started I really wanted him nude because I thought that he seemed more vulnerable. The clothes water it down. I am going to try a few things though. As far as the willy, this model will never be in a real no need to worry about silly nudity censorship issues, right? :)

09-13-2003, 06:23 AM

I misread the rules and my guy is just under 5000 polys. I just re-read and saw it is 4000!

oh well...time to prune.

I am now down to 3912 triangles. I want to use the full 4000...anyone see any places that they think could use a few more tris?

09-13-2003, 10:26 AM
hmmmn.... possibly remove those 2 edge loops down the centre (the ones on each side of the centre edge loop) of the model. Thise could free up a whole lot.

The fingers coould be optimised better.... :)

09-13-2003, 10:56 PM
MINDROT: yeah, the hands are pretty gross...i am going to fix them. that is where all of the polys were that I cut. then i realized that i had a hidden object that was no longer needed. once i deleted it, suddenly i had planty of polys.

I will probably fix up the hands and then add polys back to a few areas.

I want to keep the 2 loops on the back, because in decent lighting they look really good. nice back muscles.

09-13-2003, 11:00 PM
 sweet man.... keep posting :D

09-19-2003, 03:23 AM
I like the model, its lookin good... but every time I see it, I wish it lost its 'manhood'. Its truthfully un-needed and really takes away from the model. Just my opinion though.

09-20-2003, 07:32 AM
oh man...not sure I will finish on time :(

here is an update...just blocking in some color.

09-20-2003, 09:26 AM
hehe... looking good man..... is that stubble. nice addition if it is

Hope you make it in time!!!

09-21-2003, 12:44 AM
yup, stubble. I kinda wanted him to be pretty creepy and gross...but cartoony.

The whole do-it-in-the-car thing turned out to be really slow. Now I have less than a day to finish texturing, rig, pose and render. :surprised

ok, I switched to my home PC to try and get this done in time. Here is a mapping update. I think I decided to go with weird realistically painted maps on his obviously non-realistic shape. Seems funny to me. :) While fixing the fingers and toes, I am starting to realize i burned some polys in the neck folds that i should have put in the hands and feet. oh well

09-21-2003, 08:03 PM
:D hehe this guy is sooo cool.... those eyes, thoses eyes

I love that stomach hair....

Good luck man

09-22-2003, 01:14 AM
Ok, so it is not perfect...but I ran out of time. The commute thing made it rough, but...FINITO!

Although I said I would not do time-period clothing, I decided to do a render with a Bill the Butcher type, turn-o-the-century Gentlemen's Top hat. I will be uploading the maps and new renders and wires just for fun in the next day or two.

Good luck everyone! This was great. Can't wait 'til the next one. submit small.jpg

Hey!! Way to turn out a character…I honestly didn’t think you would finish, he turned out great too. It really captures the essence of the original drawing nicely…Nice work

09-22-2003, 08:41 AM
Great character, very original. I like the pose as well! I think with the hat on he has even more personality.

09-22-2003, 01:41 PM
heh heh...thanks. I really ran out of time, but I hope to give him some facial morphs as well so that he can really emote :)

09-22-2003, 02:14 PM
This came out really cool in the end. Looks totally crazy!!

You should have given him these big veiny balls!!

Very nice implementation of a very ugly character. Original and moved faithfully from sketch to final model. A great job to be proud of for sure.

09-28-2003, 10:29 PM
great! from a good concept came out a great job
