I create "Normal Maps" with photoshop and other software.
How do I use these "Normal Maps" in maya and mental ray for objects? (

ever pressed F1 in Maya?

you can use them through a maya bump node or directly plug them in the normal-camera of your shader, respectively overal or standard-bump of a mia_material_x for example.

Mentla ray wil lrender the normal map just fine

plug it with a regular BUMP node and flip the type to tnagent
