View Full Version : Help with modeling of motorbike fairing

I've been designing a motorbike as an on and off hobby (mostly off) for a lot of years.
I'm almost finished now, but I need some help with the front fairing.
I've got it very close to what I want, but I want all of the edges rounded off.
A few of the edges/corners are screwed up so I can't use filleting to round them off.
I'm self taught, I've spent an absolutely ridiculous amount of time on it, but I know it's a thing that some of you hot-shot modellers could just throw together.
Would anyone on this forum be able to model it (the fairing) properly for me, or do you know any forum where I could get that done?
I haven't worked for a while so I'm not in a great position to pay anyone to do this.
I modeled it in solidworks, but I could send a copy of the file in any format.

Do note: I am on Solidworks 2009
If you're on 2010 I can't yet take a look at it.
Likewise if you're on 2008 you won't be able to open up mine.

Update with images.
This is as close as I've got to the fairing.
Almost all of the corners are wrong. (The bottom corner in the image below is the only corner that is correct).http://www.craighood.com/aye/2.jpg
I've managed to (sort of) repair two of those bad corners by editing the splines, but I'm not good with splines and they're both not perfect (Ive only managed to correct the outside splines).
The inside has lots of errors.
This corner is the most complicated and it's mostly wrong because the faces don't meet properly to start with.
Same corner from another angle, it's a total mess.
Cgtalk member KevBoy has been spending some time on it (thanks again Kev), but as he said, it would be easier to fix these errors by starting the model from scratch as a lot of the faces are not where they should be.
Below, the curve should follow the blue line.
Here are the preffered curve radii.
The outside edge all the way round is 2.5mm (the overall thickness is 5mm).
So there are a few variable radius edges going from 10mm to 2.5mm.
As I said before, I'm doing this in solidworks, but I think it would be easier to repair using splines, nurbs e.t.c. in a more organic modelling program.
I can upload any file format.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Eventually got the fairing finished enough to stop working on it (though it still has some slight errors).
It was totally doing my head in, as the more time I spent on it, the more I learned about using surfaces.
So I kept realising better ways to model it and started from scratch again, eventually reaching part 18 (Starting from version 11 from over the past few years I renamed part 11 to part 1 then worked up to part 18).
I worked on this about 17 hours a day for over a week, and as you can see the result is slightly different than it was about five years ago.
Anyway, I'm glad it's over and I want to thank again the people who helped me on this and other forums.
Kevin De Smet and Chris Darwin all put lots of time into this (thanks very much again guys), but James Shaw gets the gold medal with over 25 emails and lots of work on different model versions.
I think I would have went mental without his support.
