View Full Version : fluid rendering: handware/software mix

update I thought you guys would like to see.
here's the post (there's a larger frame still on my site if you care)
Most people who've worked with fluids, have noticed that it looks better in openGL than the render... in some ways. I'm refering to smoke, not more shader based fx like fire. Smoke will have some details that seem to get lost in software render, but software render also has the benefit of smoothness of gradients and propor lighting. Those 2 key aspects keep up software rendering. My friend at work was talking about trying to hardware render his fluids and said it was almost good enough. I played around and came up with this.
hardware render for the added detail and blur/add it into comp over top of the software render. I haven't done this on production level stuff but on my initial tests the results are promising.

Interesting approach Dave.
I had messed with hardware rendering fluids a bit just because it really saves a lot of time over software rendering. The problem is the lack of lighting control and nasty banding you get out of it. Just gotta figure out a nice way to quickly software render a low res fluid and mix in a high res hardware render.... getting some nice detail and time efficiency.
Thanks for sharing!

Very cool stuff Dave!
Yeah, it's hard watching those cool nVidia and ILM jobbys where they're reading full-on fire slices in 10 minutes or something for Harry Potter on GPUs.
Then I have to use Maya, and cry myself to sleep every night. :(

This technique is going to be super handy.

Btw I'm trying smth too.So aaaaam everyone know that little option caled shading quality ->Render Interpolator->linear/smoth,so I'm trying to do smth with that linear thing :>,becouse it slows down your rend time almost to half.
So this is 2 pics of the same scene, same frame with linear and smoth.
Fluid res is 50/50/50 btw.
p.s Heres 2 examples.1st one is actualy composed in After Effects, but fluid is set to linear and its quality is actualy 1.2nd is with quality set to 2 and its linear, again it have some enchantments in After Effects, becouse all week I tryed to make cartonish looking smoke or whatever, but with no luck T_T.Fluid res is increaset to 100/100/100.

Interesting look for your cartoonish fluids Kdronez. Can you share some settings. I like it.

I will upload the project somewhere xD.Its basicly the project imported in AE and its used effects->stylized->find edges. And on effect options "invert" and you can increase "blend with original" so you can get what you want :>.I found this not better, but faster than cartoon effect in AE :>.
P.S If you cant Download it I will try to upload it again xD.
