View Full Version : Modeling question

Hello. I started using 3ds max for couple of months now doing tutorials and stuff. My questions is that, how much of tutorials and practice do i need in order to start modeling by myself without depending on tutorials?

Shot in the dark as I'm thoroughly in your boots as far as 3d art. Practice practice practice.

Keep checking out tutorials but also mess around with the app you want to use. Try re-creating tutorials you've done with other source materials. If you're into cars or guns you can find threads here for turnarounds. For characters and enviros you could base it off of photos. But do them on your own and think about the different approaches you've seen in tuts and where they apply in your practice work.

These will suck. Like it. Love it. Learn form it.

Practice practice practice.

It all depends on how you learn and practice. I got started with the Crash Bandicoot & Joan Of Arc tutorials by Michel Roger and i just kept on modeling like that, over time i picked up tricks here and there by reading whatever tutorial i came across.

I guess it also depends on the type of modeling you prefer, organics or hard surfaces. If you prefer characters, then you should also learn anatomy (the skeleton, proportions, gesture, muscle origin and insertion etc...) and practice drawing.

Is it important that i do all the tutorials 100%? Since it seems that there are some tutorials that i can't finish them, i get stuck, and that disappoints me.

I'm actually not a huge fan of tutorials, since most simply tell you to push this or that button, I find I forget very quickly what was taught through it.

What I like most are theoretical/technical reading, understanding those will prepare you very well before, during and after modeling projects.

For example, if you want to learn subdivision modeling, instead of a tutorial, I like to read theory on what it is and what works and what doesn't.

Tell us, what do you want to get into?
We can give some good resources :)

Hell, the Joan of Arc tutorial is not for beginners.

Great! I recommend reading all of these to start with:
