Wow. Front page stuff. You got my vote.

12 December 2009, 11:49 AM
great work, very nice modeling and character design.
On the crit side, the big guys left arm is a little blocky and could have been more smooth and organic especially on the vein and skin fold between the forearm and biceps.
beautiful pic non the less

12 December 2009, 11:49 AM
Really a great work! I like it:thumbsup:

12 December 2009, 11:55 AM

Hi Mike,
Long time no see here :) Let me just tell you that your last two works are great and this picture is definitely worth the choice gallery.

I like the composition and the colors. Both of the characters got a very nice expresion in their face and I also have to give you some stars for the fur that you have done :). But mostly I appreciate that feeling of some motion in the picture. It's the feeling of the big guy chewing the dog-rose and the little one pulling his head back, like if he was saying "dont eat so much you f**ng lazy bast**d". And of course the flags moving in the light mountain breeze...Pure eye candy :)

I can see you was dealing with the mental ray skin shader and i think it works very well. Maybe you could force specular maps more. But other materials in the scene doesn't work that well imho. I'm mainly talking about the horns witch seems to me like they are only default material with bump and the dog-roses witch seems like they are copper. I am also having some problems with the anatomy of big guys the left arm. Perhaps its too stylised...

I am so glad that you gave us mortals some new picture to look on :)
And i cant wait to see what you are cooking for the future
Cheers man

12 December 2009, 03:34 PM
Wow, this is really impressive work, I like the softer elements in the ribbons and berries which help break up the ruggedness of the 2 main characters. Great Stuff!

12 December 2009, 05:14 PM

12 December 2009, 11:06 PM
wow............ top score piceˇˇ

12 December 2009, 01:08 AM
good work with the modeling and material!!

my only critic would be that you need to improve your lighting, it almost look an indoor lighting, you can tell that by watching those black areas on the back of the red stripes or the back part of the big guy.

Which renderer did you used?

sorry for my english.

12 December 2009, 01:29 AM
Nice job, amazing!:surprised

12 December 2009, 06:08 AM
Very crisp and very cool. Great work.

12 December 2009, 06:15 AM
He looks like the alchemist in warcraft 3 game.

Very nice! congrats.

12 December 2009, 06:16 AM
Great work. My only concern is that the shadows seem too dark. With that background environment, I would expect to see more ambient light. Otherwise, cool idea.

12 December 2009, 07:59 AM
great image and great humor!
my brother saw this image last night and said "man why do not you do such quality work!"
love it!

12 December 2009, 08:31 AM

12 December 2009, 01:12 AM
Great work!

12 December 2009, 01:40 AM
Orcs and goblins are blase until they are done superbly. :)

12 December 2009, 02:01 AM
Beautiful work !

Though The big guys free hand seems a little strange in the position, it draws the eye down and out of the frame,,,perhaps on the horn of his belt could better lead the eye around for harmony,,,

12 December 2009, 02:02 AM
or maybe grabbing the foot of the little guy,,,that would create a compositional circle :)

12 December 2009, 02:15 AM
good work!! congratulations for your front page!!

12 December 2009, 04:50 AM
Excellent Modeling !
well done.

12 December 2009, 08:08 AM
great character!
congra on CG Choice!
imo, the light doesn't look like outdoor/exterior light
it needs more "bounces"/color bleeding

12 December 2009, 08:48 AM
Sick work man !!!

12 December 2009, 08:50 AM
congratulation on the CG Choice :applause::beer:

12 December 2009, 09:22 AM
great work :P

12 December 2009, 09:47 AM
Great work!

I want to add that I DONT have any problems with left arm, because even if it is not "anatomically standard" it does fit the big guy. I mean these are monsters from a different reality, I don't want the anatomy to be to human on fantasy creatures. It fits in this case and it was actually something I liked before reading the comments on it.

Well deserved front page!

12 December 2009, 10:22 AM
amazing stuff !

12 December 2009, 11:22 AM
Congratulations, very nice couple, your work rocks :applause:

12 December 2009, 11:44 AM
Wow. Pretty darn amazing. I would love to see these characters in a short or feature.

12 December 2009, 12:03 PM
Really nice work!!! Nice attention to detail!!!

12 December 2009, 01:36 PM
Nice character-modeling and shading. The textures look good.

now for the crits: if anyone can't stand straight words, then please don't read on ;)
no bashing intended, just my honest opinion

The lighting of the characters and the background don't match. Background has a light from a top-right direction, while the Characters get a lighting from top-left.
The Characters have subsurface scattering, the plants the big guy holds doesn't. Not a big deal, but it makes the plants look like they don't really fit into the scene.
Therefore, I don't think it really deserved a CG-Choice award.

And finally a personal thing: Orcs/Goblins :( don't want to see them boring.

12 December 2009, 02:00 PM
Cool work mate, congratulations

12 December 2009, 03:04 PM
Really nice work. Good job mate! :)

12 December 2009, 03:36 PM
Velice dobry chlape! Libi se mi to!

12 December 2009, 04:59 PM
Awesome image - great work.

H13 - I think you're being a tad harsh saying it doesn't deserve a CG-Choice award. I can agree that orc type characters arn't all that original but I think there's more to it than just that. I think the main thing that makes this stand out is that it's interesting - all good art tells a "story", meaning there's more to it than just an orc character. It's technically impressive too - you've pointed out a few problems with it but these are minor so I think it is worthy of the award.

Besides, I just plain like it.

12 December 2009, 06:54 PM
stunning work!! i love it :applause:

12 December 2009, 07:53 PM
The image is really nice, but feels a bit flat to me.

Also is it based on the miles teves sculpture?

12 December 2009, 08:23 PM
ooooo perfect:)

12 December 2009, 12:24 AM
kinda reminds me of photos u take at the mall with a fake backdrop. the photo background just totally ruins it for me. besides not matching the scene, there's no mid ground its just the characters and the mountains a mile away. i like the modeling, but presentation falls short imo. very harsh shadows for an outdoor scene (should probably be more blue than black) and the lighting doesn't really match up. textures feel a little monochromatic and flat (big guy is all pink, little guy is all green). not saying it isn't a good piece, but i dont agree with some of the choices made

12 December 2009, 12:47 AM
Nice render for the most part, but feel that the poses could do with a lot more work - they look very stiff, with not much thought put into actually how a character would perform the actions they are performing (even in still pose form).

That doesn't look like how any creature with four fingers and a thumb would hold a telescope (looks awkward). I think it's predominantly due to all his fingers (not including the pinky) being in a perfect straight line. Try holding something of that diameter up to your eye (and of significant weight just like a brass telescope) - I'll wager that your fingers splay out and rotate differently. The telescope guy's clavicle doesn't appear to have moved even though he's raised his arm. He doesn't appear to actually be in the process of steering the ogre, so wouldn't he look more natural resting his arm on his leg (it would be tiring holding the reins up in the air like that for an extended period of time). And the ogre's hands look very stiff (fingers all lined up etc).

The poses just don't look natural.

This is a great piece and those nit picking need to re-think, can you do better? I love the modelling, the texturing and the composition, and I think as a piece of art its very engaging. Great job with the hair too its a bitch to get right!

Oh and the little guy is my favourite! :)

12 December 2009, 03:06 AM
This is a great piece and those nit picking need to re-think, can you do better?Assuming you included me in those you feel are nit picking:

I am constructively critiquing the work. Plain and simple. Nit picking, perhaps. But that's what is going to help the artist get even better.

It really doesn't have any bearing on whether the one critiquing could do any better, it only matters whether the one critiquing has a good eye. I do.

12 December 2009, 10:08 AM
very nice

12 December 2009, 10:24 AM
very nice job, and the fur-hair is really well done, perhaps you could make a little explanation of the creation of fur :arteest::arteest::arteest:

well, you got a point there. But as I said, just my personal opinion. No harm intended ;)

12 December 2009, 11:13 AM

Great work! I really liked the theme/story. The characters do tell a lot! Congrats!

12 December 2009, 12:22 PM
Really Nice of using subsurface scattering effect, really cool!

12 December 2009, 04:19 PM
Really great work! Very funny expressions in their faces! :D

12 December 2009, 07:43 PM
The background feels very disconnected from the characters in the foreground. It seems like a last minute thing to me. It is photo-real while the characters are quite something different. I am having a hard time enjoying your great character work because of that one simple fact.

12 December 2009, 12:28 PM
Coool, work man, i really like the fantasy approach to this image but i m agree with OneFuzzyBrain abt the background.other then that great work.

12 December 2009, 04:48 PM
