View Full Version : Mechanical Scorpion, Banshee (3D)

08 August 2003, 09:54 AM (

Hi guys!

I modelled this little guy during the last 5-6 evenings.
Itīs Max5.1, about 1.3 million faces, rendertime about 1 hour (1 Ghz, 256 MB Ram :annoyed: )

Hope you like it!

EDIT: I added some wires on page 4, 5 and 6 of this thread.

EDIT: Added a new, slightly different version with a shiny metal for the mechanics. Which one do you prefere? :

Thank you all for your c&cīs!

08 August 2003, 09:59 AM
...amazing... absolutely amazing...

08 August 2003, 09:59 AM
amazing work!

08 August 2003, 10:06 AM
Awesome work, it could use some better shadows and a scene. Other people have done mechanical scorpions before, I believe this is now the best...

08 August 2003, 10:23 AM
woow.. not that is what I call detailed model. IMPRESSIVE!:applause:

08 August 2003, 10:33 AM
very nice modeling.I love the details.

08 August 2003, 10:34 AM
 OMG!

08 August 2003, 10:37 AM
 great!!!

08 August 2003, 10:38 AM
Wow! Thank you for your response!
And BIG thanks for the front-page plug!
That was propably the last thing I expected!

08 August 2003, 10:39 AM

(one minute of absolute silence)

Holy crap man can we see some closeups? Especially the hooks near his "eyes" and the legs do interest me. And a wire... please? Very very good scene, very detailed.

Wish I could do that

08 August 2003, 10:54 AM
Great piece you got there!:applause:

Do you have any more views or details of the scorpion.

08 August 2003, 10:55 AM
absolutely incredible :buttrock:

Seldom have I seen such detail in a model...

really amizing and beautyful work :applause:

08 August 2003, 11:02 AM
@Garma & Zag: Iīm actually quite glad that my old PC did THIS render, so I donīt have any more views at the moment. Iīm at work now, but tonight I can certainly get a wireframe and some closeups ("head", legs, whatever..) rendered. There are actually a lot more details underneath the shell, the whole mechanic parts are attached to each other. Maybe Iīll remove the shell (do you say that? shell? Sorry, German :) ) and post the raw mechanic parts tomorrow. Letīs see what my PC says :annoyed:

Thanks again, I was really getting annoyed with this model during the last 2 days and your response is very "refreshing"

08 August 2003, 11:07 AM
I have seen many different variations of machined creatures, varying from different styles, but this one in particular works perfectly in portraying what I feel would be how a mechanical scorpion would look like. The way the outer body layer curls over the machinery below, stretching out beneath the legs to form the structure is something to be admired.

Perhaps if you added a darker background with various lights surrounding certain areas of the body, it would give the model a sense of depth. Of course this is only a suggestion.

The model looks digitally painted with a wacom, rather that an actual model, which to me is a good thing. I feel it adds to the picture, with that slight etches to the colour.

The model has been constructed very well, so there’s nothing more to say other than good job.

08 August 2003, 11:22 AM
nice!!

08 August 2003, 11:23 AM
WOW  Awsome model :applause:

08 August 2003, 11:40 AM
:applause: :applause:

I see i have myself a new wallpaper then!! Fantastic.

Any chance you could post a rendered wireframe the same size??

08 August 2003, 11:41 AM
really nice stuff u got there m8! Things that might improve the pic could b to try and up the contrst between the scorpion thingie and the white BG, it kinda melts in to much now I think. The shader u used for the brownish metal looks realy cool :) What app did u use for this?

Wolf S
08 August 2003, 11:42 AM
Scorpions have 8 legs...:p
but very nice anyway

08 August 2003, 11:53 AM
@Wolf S: :p
I know, most Scorpions do. I had some Reference-Photos of 8-legged and 6-legged scorpions and made sth like a compromise and changed one pair of legs to those little "hooks"-things at the front.

@H3rbie: I used Max5.1 for modeling and rendering. The metall is basically just a simple prozedural steel material with glossy reflections and a very fine bump-mapping, specular mapping and a high-res environment-map.

@MVP: Yes, Iīm going to render some closeups and wireframes, propably tonight.

Thanks guys!!!

08 August 2003, 11:57 AM
great lookin' render, and awesome modeling, good work! (wasn't aware that 6-legged scoprions existed, that defys the rules of a aracnid)

08 August 2003, 12:20 PM
@Gremlin: Oh yes, they do exist with 6 legs. Donīt know if the loose one pair of legs sometimes, but hereīs another reference-photo:

08 August 2003, 01:37 PM
anychance we can see wireframe................

very nice man........cooool:thumbsup:

08 August 2003, 02:07 PM
I'm a scorpio too! I love this model, it's my favorite model right now. The details are complex and the texture is beautiful. :D

08 August 2003, 02:12 PM
Wow, that's a really great moddel..
I love it!

08 August 2003, 03:00 PM
nice nice, does it move?

08 August 2003, 03:10 PM

08 August 2003, 03:12 PM
wow just amazing ! 5/5 stars

08 August 2003, 03:17 PM
Very impressive work!!

08 August 2003, 03:18 PM
Nice modelling work :)

08 August 2003, 03:22 PM
wow, thank you !!

@Incrediblah: Not yet, no. Iīve ordered a new PC (really good machine :) ) and I might try to animate it, my old one wonīt do it. Donīt know, I might even have to change some details to get it moving, although I tried quite hard to get it as functional as possible

@phoenix: As soon as I have the time for it, Iīm still at work, the model is on my PC at home.

Thanks for the 5* genix!!!

08 August 2003, 03:26 PM
really impressive and amazing artwork but too bad no background picture to support it , keep it a try man !!!!!!

Moon on the Cloud,To The Flower,The Wind

The legend of shadow warrior was just begun

08 August 2003, 03:37 PM
really amazing peace of work, would like to see animation of that one.

08 August 2003, 03:38 PM
1.3 million faces before all the smoothing?

08 August 2003, 03:40 PM
it's cool Design !!!:p

08 August 2003, 04:00 PM

Very, very nice!! Wonderfull modelling and rendering

btw: Werft mal einen Blick auf meinen Troll

08 August 2003, 04:00 PM
@visualboo: AFTER the smoothing ;)

08 August 2003, 04:27 PM
It's too...umm...too.... SCARY!

Yeah! that's it! scary! :D

08 August 2003, 04:30 PM
very nice work indeed :applause:

Sehr schöne Texture und vorallem ein fettes Render von deinem Model - nice one :buttrock:

08 August 2003, 04:58 PM
super impressive!
i'd hate to come across onea those ;o

08 August 2003, 05:21 PM
that's amazing! it really looks like a 2D artwork (which is great)

btw, correct me if i'm wrong, but the two pincers are transformed legs (same thing for crabs), hence this scorpio does have 8 legs..

08 August 2003, 06:07 PM
Reeaally great work =) I would like to see it in a movie ;)

08 August 2003, 06:20 PM
Thanks for the 5* genix!!!
Du hasses verdient ;)

08 August 2003, 06:44 PM
Amazing work there Banshee. Abesolutely amazing.

Sometimes it truly suprizes me, taht people with a relative low hardver config can model in a such detailed manner. I've got a much better PC back home, and I still never had the patience, and skills to complete such a high detailed thing. Man, that scorpion looks really like 1.3 million polygons, not like some other scenes I saw somewhere, where the polycount was just about the same or higher. Nice job.

Now, I'm really keen on some closeups, really on the mechanical design of the legs, recently I studied artificial insect desingns in real life, and I'm really interested on how did you built it all up. Would it be really able to move, or to stand on it's own legs. Really.

Nice job, wonder if I'm ever going to be that patient and talented to do such shocking models. :buttrock:

- A.

08 August 2003, 07:01 PM
Great work...
Nice lighting...

08 August 2003, 07:17 PM
yeah

08 August 2003, 07:31 PM
neat design and well executed, but too bright!

08 August 2003, 07:44 PM
I'm Speechless. Can't find other words to describe. Guess this model must really strain you eyes when doing it?

08 August 2003, 07:51 PM
ah very good! :D

:annoyed: sqush it!!! :surprised LOL just joking...

08 August 2003, 08:20 PM
Wow, incredible work! Saving to inspiration folder... Now maybe put it in an environment? :)

08 August 2003, 08:34 PM
might we see a wire?

08 August 2003, 09:56 PM
This can't be a rendering. It's stunning work. Elegant design.
Only in 5 days?

08 August 2003, 11:05 PM

that was a rely nice scorpion. Great detail on the mecanisms.

It would be great if you can show us some closeups or render a larger one....please

08 August 2003, 11:07 PM
Great work! I'd love to see a wireframe. The face reminds me of Dave Wilson's work.:buttrock:

08 August 2003, 12:18 AM
OMG sweeeeet concept of it. Great all around, and nice detail.

08 August 2003, 01:28 AM
Excelent work!
That's really cool!
I love details

It reminds me Dave Wilson ( art

08 August 2003, 03:01 AM
This is stunning work. I like the level of detail.

Looks a bit more dangerous than the real thing too!

08 August 2003, 04:39 AM
hey man.. nice modelling... and beautifull render .. 5 stars

08 August 2003, 05:23 AM
super job, i like the shader, i can imagine myself touching it and feeling the metallic striations....

by the way is anyone else getting a bit creeped out by this topic? All the reference pics are freaking me out, i keep feeling things on my legs now.....

08 August 2003, 08:44 AM
Thank you all again for this great response!

Last night I tried to get some proper, neat renderd Wireframes done, but for some reason my PC crashed every single time. I still got an older Version (unfortunately without some of the major interior mechanical parts) that I could upload if you want to. Just ask :)
Nevertheless, I got some Screenshots, untextured Versions and some close-ups of some of the front mechanical parts etc.
I wonīt give up rendering the complete wireframe again, please be patient :)
Here they are (just to prove itīs a rendering as several people doubted it :p )

normal Viewport Screenshot:

08 August 2003, 08:45 AM
Close-up View of the front mechanics and the optical system (viewport Screenshot):

Another one:

08 August 2003, 08:46 AM
And the optical system without the shell:

Untextured pre-rendering (smoothed twice)

08 August 2003, 08:46 AM
Last but not least ;) a simple metal-shading-test which was the base-material for the scorpionīs shell:

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions!

And yes: I will certainly upload a proper, nice wireframe as soon as possible!

cheers guys!!!

08 August 2003, 08:49 AM
@jscheel and fabrizzzio: I take this as a compliment :buttrock:

DaveWilsons work is amazing... heīs a genius.

08 August 2003, 09:29 AM
You did an awsome work!

Can you get us some more info on texturing part, Banshee

I send you a PM

08 August 2003, 09:50 AM

Didnīt see your post here before so I wrote a PM as well.
Check your mail :)

08 August 2003, 10:01 AM
nice nice nice ;) cool rendering - and ... gimme that metal :scream: !!!

08 August 2003, 10:07 AM
Hey Banshee,

If ya want i can post the info you sent to me about the texture. :)

08 August 2003, 10:25 AM

maybe shadows could be better, but this is not so important

08 August 2003, 01:03 PM
Hey! Good news (for me at least..)

I got my new PC today :)
Itīs a 2.6 Ghz with a Radeon 9800 and 1 GB RAM.
So I have to install everything tonight (and propably tomorrow) and then Iīll render this little guy in High-Res (8000x6000 for print ,just for myself of course, nothing special).

It will be really cool when I donīt have to wait ages after each mouse-klick or command anymore.....

Yeeeha! :D

Thanks to all again who wrote something and gave their comments. It was very encouraging!

08 August 2003, 01:12 PM
It will be really cool when I donīt have to wait ages after each mouse-klick or command anymore.....

yepp my system (Athlon 750 mhz + Geforce 2Mx + 384 mbRam) isn't the best anymore, too :hmm:

08 August 2003, 04:52 PM
Oh, I forgot to answer some questions, sorry
I do appreciate your c&cīs and I try to answer all of them, shame on me if I forget someone.

@VizStorm: Yeah, quite bright :) But that was intended. I even put some rim-lights with a very light, white volume-light behind the model to get these "glowing" edges. I wanted it to be that way to achive this kind of painted, airbrushed look.

@phonic: I havenīt planed to put it into an environment. The reason for this is simple: First of all, I simply wanted to present this model as a stand-alone model without anything around, so the eyes canīt get distracted by "unneccessary" stuff. You know what I mean? My english isnīt the best...
Secondly I personally love this style - just one Object, Character or what ever centered, drawing all the attention on itself (typical: Iīm an advertising-student  )
Third: I wanted to have a decent Wallpaper for myself :p

@robcamp: Yes, 5-6 evenings. When I come home from work I normally relax for about half an hour, call my girlfriend and then start maxing. I need this! Then my head just gets empty again and I can concentrate on sth that I like and donīt have everydays work in my head...
I think I got this done in 5 days because I knew exactly where I was going. I had my reference-photos, I knew how the mechanic had to look like.. The materials were created within 2,3 hours.. so I didnīt lose too much time.

08 August 2003, 05:11 PM
Banshee... you're insane!! :surprised

that's incredible work.. how'd you get your head round the workings of that lil beasty!

lookin forward to seein it in a proper environment..

08 August 2003, 07:44 PM
that is the most detailed scorpion i've seen in my life and coolest. nice

08 August 2003, 07:58 PM
abseluter hammer :buttrock:

hast das ding echt geil hingekriegt . besonders die nahaufnahemen der " augen "

08 August 2003, 08:38 AM
Thanks AGAIN!
WOW, iīve just seen itīs in the Gallery !? Does that mean I got this funky little golden award-thingy?

That would be.... GREAT!

Anyway: Here is the promised Wire-Frame (unfortunately without some of the cables!! The missing cables (a lot of them actually...) were all nurbs. Doesnīt Max render Nurbs as Wireframe?

Oh yes! And Iīve updated Page1 of this thread. I rendered a slightly different version last night with my new PC (in only 9 minutes!! Yeeha!) and changed the material of the mechanics into a shiny, black/dark metal.

Please comment on that, which material do you like more? Itīs important for me as Iīm going to render it in Poster-size next week...

Thank you!

@DaveAustin: Hi there! Whatīs your Bot doing? Havenīt seen anything of it for some time...:wavey:

Ah yes.. the wireframe:

08 August 2003, 10:24 AM

08 August 2003, 12:02 PM
I like the newer version. Before the grey parts were too flat. Now it betters matches the rest of it. Awesome work man, the amount of detail in this is amazing!

08 August 2003, 04:50 PM
Damn, that's some high detailed mechanics there :D
Relly nice model :)

08 August 2003, 12:37 AM
I normally like to see a finished piece b4 I submit it to the gallery, but there's always a few of you that have such an eye for detail (such a wurp) that I can't let it go :) The scary thing about this scorpion is that it actually looks mobile. Very nice work with the tiny components, believe me it was worth it! Now animate him :)

You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Nice work!

upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame ( - which you are now placed

P.S. Please email me @ so I can send you the award .psd file

08 August 2003, 12:53 AM
First: Congratulations to you Banshee ;)

Second: Your Wireframe is awesome - i love it. It is my Wallpaper now :buttrock:

Third: I like the shiny Scorpio much more than the darker one

08 August 2003, 01:43 AM
Just going with the flow and saying nice job and glad to see someone else doesn't feel the need to stick an environment on a model seeing as it's about the model.........never mind.. they'll get it someday.

top 10
08 August 2003, 02:11 AM
:hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

08 August 2003, 03:19 AM
Banshee your model is awesome.

Very impressive. Keep up the good work;)

08 August 2003, 12:43 PM

08 August 2003, 08:37 AM
@lildragon: Thanks a lot, I actually canīt believe I got this award...

I think the difference between the Pic in the Gallery and the updated version (with the shiny metal parts) is not too big - although it seems that everyone prefers the newer version but as itīs on page one of this thread I think itīs ok like it is now :)

Thank you all again for your great response.. itīs simply fantastic and youīve all been very encouraging!

08 August 2003, 09:22 PM

as much as I dislike arachnids this one I like :) lovely work.

02 February 2004, 06:01 AM
awesome image and model. two quick questions :
- can you show how you made the wriefarme render ??
- can you explain how you created the texture ?

the texture is awesome and really brings out the image. i would love to know how to create such textures. thanks alot.

congrats on the award...

02 February 2004, 02:58 PM
Wow, there are still responses to this thread? :)
Thank you for your comments!
@redbear: Wireframe is easy: Group your model, apply a white material to it.
Make a copy of the whole group, add the "push" modifier (small value, about 0.5 % here). Apply a wire-material to it. Done :)

The surface is easy to make. Simply take a metall-material, give it a nice environment-map. Then go to the bump-channel and add a mix-map. In both slots you put a noise map with high tiling values (for exapmple 0,1000,0 in the first, 1000,0,0 in the second) That gives a 90 degree brushed-metal-Pattern.
Or you take several noise maps and turn and rotate them slightly until youīre satisfied. Thatīs what I did here, 3 diff. Noisemaps with slightly different angles. Done ;)
