View Full Version : Character: anime style

I'm thinking of putting this into my first ever modeling portfolio. I'm really scared though. I hear awful stories of people who constantly apply and never get into the industry, even though their porfolio has works MUCH superior than mine. Someone please let me know how I can correct this.

This model took me roughly 2 and a half days to complete, then an additional day and a half worth of texture unwrapping. It's my first ever "cohesive" character model. I decided to make something rather simple and to the point.

Please critique this. Also, I'm very curious as to how I should texture the chest/shirt. I'm not the best texture artist in the world (only done it a couple times) but every demo reel guide I've read said it's good to include your best texture work on your models. I have no idea how to detail/texture her clothing. Some suggestions and samples would be awesome.

I'm disatisfied with her eyes too. Something bugs me about the pupil and iris. Can someone tell me what's wrong? I've tried a variety of eyeball types for this style of face (super exageratted, like children) but nothing goes too well.

If I were to put her in a demo reel, should I rig and pose her as well? Should I render with final gather like I did here? It takes roughly 2-3 minutes per frame to render... :(

Please give me critiques and feedback. THANKS!!!!!

Overall I like her.

There's a few things I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe the arms are a bit short, hard to tell, maybe put a crease at the inside elbow. Fingers definitely look too short to me. Hair coming out at top of forehead looks a bit odd because they are so fine while the main hair looks isn't.

I like the eyes but they do look like black holes sometimes. Would imagine it would look weird if you animated her looking around though. Not sure what to do about that other than making them smaller, maybe post a pic with them smaller.

Love the belt, really cool.

Hope that helps......... a little!!

This character has a lot of potential.

Reminds me a bit of the ff chrystal chronicles style.

I have the following suggestions:

- make her eyebrows a color that matches her hair, only a little darker.

- the feet don't fit the model, maybe make them a lot bigger.

- the eyes, just don't make the iris black. If you really don't know what to do, have a look at the final fantasy 9 and final fantasy chrystal chronicles characters.

- hands look good imo!

Yes, always pose your model! You have worked for days on modelling and texturing, why not put some extra time in the rigging and maybe animating.

For the texturing, it looks like she is wearing a coton dress, so make it coton, the top looks connected to bottom, so make them both in the same material. Look at some robe like materials.

Thats it :)

Yeah, I agree with the person above, the feet need to be bigger. Also, change the texture of the gloves. (but I already told ya that.) Overall, I like her. :)

Some updates. I upped the size of her feet/shoes, added texture to clothing, modified several things on her face, and gave her a new eyeball. The eyeball actually has a cornea but it looks like the eyeball is sticking out too far now :(

Perhaps a more sterotypical anime eye would help? Make the color of the iris something that will stand out more, such as blue or green?

I think the feet are to high, they don't really fit the model yet.
Maybe you should shorten them a little bit. It looks better if you get the idea the boots come from under the dress, i think.

The texture doesn't look bad, but it doesn't add much to the character either. I don't like the thick black line on it, maybe you should try one simple color, and stick a japanese patern of flowers on one side. I don't know, just a suggestion. I think the eyebrows look better, but the eyes are still to dark and the eyelashes are really thick.

Well, thats it again :)

Thanks so much DogmaD. :)

Here are the updated textures for her chest and skirt:

I'm still fairly new at painting textures. I'm not good at painting in shades/folds and details in yet... :( Any suggestion on how to cram more detail in could help a lot. Thanks again!! :3

Thats a lot better! I don't have any comments at the moment, i will see how it progresses

some progress

I'm fairly proud of how the shoe textures came out. Please give me suggestions because I want to improve it a lot more.

Next I'm going to texture the belts... and then it's time to rig........
