View Full Version : Controlling instanced particle's rotation?

11-27-2009, 06:58 PM
Hey everyone,

I am trying to rotate instanced particles around a local axis as the particles travel along a curve. I've set up rotPP attributes but I do not know expression writing very well and am not getting the results I want. I have a playblast posted here:

Hey there Michael,

From looking at your playblast I would think that what you are after is the aim direction rather than a rotation expression. Now I may be wrong, and you may be trying to do something totally different from what Im thinking. But if in fact you want the fish to aim towards the direction they are heading in, set the 'Aim Direction' to 'Velocity' in your instancer attributes on your particleShape node.

I hope that was helpful,

Edit: I forgot to mentioned that when your instanced objects are zero'ed out they should be facing the positive X axis.

Thanks for the responses Wick3dParticle & kdronez, they were both helpful and I'm feeling more comfortable with particle rotation and writing some basic expression. The aim direction is what I ended up using but what I was really after is a combination of a pp rotation (like the fish are spinning along a single axis) and the aim direction working together. If there is a way of combining not ranking Maya's rotation options I haven't solved that one yet.
