I am new to Maya, and 3D modeling in general. I am building a game in Unity3D, but it is going to be restricted to a 2D view. I am developing the models in Maya, but because the game will be restricted to a 2D view, I am only concerned about the front and back of the character. I tried to layer the objects so that certain parts of the character cover other parts. For example, I wanted the grass skirt to cover the torso, so I layered the object of the grass skirt wider or with greater depth than the torso and made it surround the torso. The attached images will illustrate what I am trying to accomplish. When you view the character from the front, it looks ok, but when you view the back, it looks all wrong, and Maya seems almost counter-intuitive to the way I expect it to look. Please take a look at the attached pictures and maybe explain to me the correct way to accomplish this character setup.
