Hi there
Need some help with masking please

I have two objects, one in front of the other. I would like to mask the object in front so that when rendered I will see the back obect with color while the front object shape is masked out (black). This is so I can composite the two objects seperately for animation. It needs to be rendered in Mental Ray. I have maya 2010

put a lambert on the front object. turn matte opacity in the shader to black hole. voila !

add a "use background" shader to the object that needs to be blacked out, it will recognize the geometry as part of the bg and render nothing, not even an alpha. It's the shader thats icon looks like a black ring
