Hi everyone. Here is an illustration Im currently working on:

These two characters belong to a set of figures originally concieved of as action figures. The setting is supposed to be a kind of appocalyptic fairytale.

The story of the two characters is that they are survivors of a great war, wich have left the world a burnt out shell full of automated warmachines. They have to live as scavengers who loot old stores and prey on the combat droids that still roam the land.

I want to focus the image on the pair, and keep the background subdued. Currently Im trying to achieve this by having the backround be grayscale, I was thinking that mabybe I ought to give it som color ater all, but I like the way it makes the world around them seem dead.

The costumes are inspired by early 20th century uniforms and clothing, but I want to tweak it a bit. Im not so fond of the mechanical arm, and the toolbag, and Im searching for some good reference on alternatives.

Hey man,

I like your concept.
The background left gray isn't such a bad idea.
Don't put much detail in it either since it's about the characters in the front.
So if I were you I'd first put all my effort in the characters.

It's looking great so far.

Here is another quick scetch of the big character. Ill post some re-designs of the mechanical arm later too.

Ive started an overhaul of the robot arm. Ive been doodeling around on the silhouette to come up with a nice looking outline, but Ive run out of time. I kind of like how it looks from the side angle now. It is a bit of a hapazard and messy but still massive looking. But the front / back silhouette still needs to look less regular.

I was inspired by the anime Steamboy to try out some clockwork for the concept. Ill update this scetch tomorrow with some more cogs and details (and color hopefully).

another increment on the arm. Im thinking of making it look like its made mostly of brass, with steel details. Not much else to comment on. I need to get the details finished...

Another update:

Ive added the new arm to the character, but now Im thinking that it is a bit too flimsy. I think I can resolve that by scaling up som cogs or other elements.

The thing Im least happy about is the shoulder attachment, but Im not sure how to proceed with that right now. Hopefully It will come to me later. Im also uncertain about the shield on the hand. I like it but it seems it might be clashing with the look of the arm itself. I should perhaps reconsider it...

You could have the shoulder attachement harness around the neck, start it under the arm, across the chest and around the neck? It would give more natural support.

My only crit may be the colors, I like the muted bg, but the costume color seem a bit much, if they are in dangerous area their colors would be a bit more camo, muted as well, you can still have them have more color than the bg, but the whole bright blue, green orange and gold seem to be a bit hard on the eyes, and really huge target for potential enemies. Just me thoughts...
