Hi All Maya Experts!

Would this effect be something can be done with Maya Cloth Simulation? (combine with AE?)

Toyota commercial (

Or what does this effect called so I can do some R&D on google.

Found something like this....

Just dragging the cloth off a solid object is the easy part. In the commercial, the tricky part is obviously giving the impression that the car seamlessly turns into a piece of cloth.

Id hazard a guess and say that the best way to do it would be to render your car and camera-project the render back onto a cloth object that is draped over the same car. You probably need to 'bake' the texture into the cloth object.

You would then render the cloth-car being dragged off the solid-car in a seperate pass (switch primary visibility off for your solid-car).

You would then repeat the process for the next car and composite it all together afterwards. That's probably how Id look at doing it anyway.

here's my part, pretty much what Pete explained, but let's see if i could make it personal:

your basically mixing live footage with 3d elements,

watch carefully as when they are about to reveal the new car under the cloth, the camera moves slowly (not in all cases), also watch how the camera movements are really not that erratic.

Having said that, this is how it could have been done...

establishing the shots in the real world, which would mean having established the camera on a perfectly setup up rig.
matching them up with the camera plates of maya...
modelling similar vehicles in maya to project the maps onto the cloth simulation
and post processing live footage with cg elements...
key being here camera projection...

i urge you to first watch this (

and then read this thread ( to learn the making of - Yes, just photographs!

Brilliant stuff!

Thanks Guys!

If the rest of you have anymore insight, feel free to drop me a line. I will try to do something similar to this commercial and post my technics back in here later.
