I'd like to create something similar to this

is it possible to do this sort of simulation in maya, with the default maya particles? i know they arn't able to simulate volume. Also how do i get them to flow into the shape of a character? I want to do playing cards forming a bird shape and then flow out.

Hi Richard,

I think that this is totally doable in Maya.
Like many other spots, it involves multiple layers of effects and techniques.

I believe that it starts with "hero" bunnies, that are animated. Then it looks like a crowd of instanced animation comes in. I still think they are mixing in a few hero bunnies in these shots too. Next they form shapes using particle goals, basically assigning goal shapes that the particles are assigned to using geometry. On the far shots, they most likely are using lower rez models, because instancing all those in hi res can kill a computer.

Probably binaryproxies would do the trick for the massive amounts.
