View Full Version : SMC 21 (10-26 to 11-2)

10 October 2009, 09:22 AM

as promised, here is the new challenge. This week we are going to model:

- Water Tower
- Wooden Puppet (link (
- Lightsaber
- Screws
- Binoculars

Just to avoid any misunderstandings with the time limits, I'm giving this challenge a 2 hour modeling time limit. If you don't finish in 2 hours, don't worry, just post the model that you had when the time ran out. This only limits your modeling time, reference hunting and rendering are not "covered" by this limit, meaning you can spend as much time on them as you like.

Have fun and start modeling!

hello ;)

I spend 75 minutes on this one, without the rendering. It's "jocasta nu"'s lightsaber, i really don't remember her, I only picked her lightsaber for the geometric form of the lower part...

omg reverse threads!:banghead: took 1hr 45min.

Hi Guys,
This is my first time entering the SMC, so i hope i did everything right:) if not, please let me know and i will make sure my future entries will fall into the right category and follow all the rules.

Welcome !

I see only very cool entries so far, and it's a miracle, everyone respected the time-limit !
Thanks, Msus for these new subjects, and good luck to digitool for whatever he's doing ;)

10 October 2009, 12:41 AM modeling done in maya in 70 min, another 60 for shading/lighting/rendering.

hey guys, i was wondering if i can texture my entry and post it here as well, let me know, or should i take it int WIP and actually make a scene?
i did not have time to make it textured, i was on the train while making my saber thing :) let me know,
I love entires so far, shows a lot of creative approaches :)

Welcome new comers!

I really love the lightsabers, they turned out pretty awesome.

Rico271, try beveling your edges. Beveling will smooth out your edges, making your model "less sharp" and more realistic.

We have nothing against texturing or doing "proper" renders. Just make sure that you include a wireframe of your model as well, so that we can comment on your modeling.

Love the entries, and I want to see more of them :) My water tower is half finished, hoping to post it in a day or so.

Water Tower - 37mins.

I was lazy and didn't model connectors for the cross supports. A ladder and some other details would have been nice, but meh...

Modeled after one of the well known UC Davis water towers ( on campus.

My entry, a water tower. Took me about 1h 30min. Not very happy with it, but I did enjoy making it. (

Lightsaber, quite simple design. Took roughly 1h since I had to made a mistake of using too low resolution cylinder as a base and had to go Sub-D most pieces to get shape little bit smoother and that took the time away from adding details.

Imageshack is made of fail and seems to take some time for images to show up.... ( (

speedmodeling done in 32 min.

Has been ages since I have been modelling, thought would give a try. Modelled in Lightwave 9.6 in around 1 hour 20 minutes. Sort of rough, but was good to get the feet wet again. Simple Screenshot out of the Interface, hope is good enough for viewing.

hmnn, not certain my upload is coming through. not certain why not working will try to fix.

ok, here is link for it.

better res.

hey guys,
are we going to have announcement on who got first place, i know that there are no prizes ;) but it would not be called a competition without a winner:) hehe

Sadly (or luckily) we don't announce winners, as the speed modelling challenges are "personal" challenges and not so "community" (who's the best) challenges. The winners of SMCs are those that actually post their speed models, as they learn and improve their workflow by getting feedback. The point is not to "be the best", but rather to improve.

Even If wanted to have a winner, choosing one would be very complicated. Would we look at time spent, model complexity, modeling workflow, wireframes etc.

Understood. Thank you.

I would like to congratulate everyone who attended this competition with winning.
This was my first time in, and i loved it. Can't wait to get into smc 22. and i am looking forward to have some nice topics to choose from.

These aren't competitions. It's simply a way for people to try and improve their modeling skills.

i just figured, challenge/competition.. you know :) but i am on the same page guys:) lets keep on going. i think i will do boombox for SMC22 :)
see you there.

Well, total model time is about 35 minutes, aiming for a Victorian London style tower. I may come back to it and set some materials etc up to get a decent render....
