View Full Version : FXWars! QUEEN OF THE ROCKETMEN! stacktrace, SINGLE SHOT Entry

10 October 2009, 09:45 PM
Hey folks. I've been lurking these challenges for...years now. Finally, I decided to register and join-in.

I only have lunch-breaks and the odd hour here and there, so I'm doing a rather basic skyskape/flythrough shot. Hopefully I'll fit in some nice machinery and rocket trails :)

Wish me luck, hope I can manage the time to finish!

Good luck to everyone else as well :)

Good luck Jeremy.

Giving it some more thought, I'm going to go for a short glimpse of a small scout plane dropping through a cloud layer, revealing a floating city in the sky. The city may end up being just tall buildings, or maybe a zeppelin. I'm still working out the details, totally open to suggestion. Depending on how much time, I may use a rocket-person instead.

Here are some random reference images for the sort of tone I'm going for.

and of course, obligatory cloud city image :)

Hopefully I'll have time to do some animatics or at least rudimentary boards this week.

EDIT: edited the images to links because they were HUGE

Good luck fella!

Welcome and good luck!

Thanks guys :)

I'm still working out exactly *what* I want to do, but last night a threw together a quick shot for testing. Got a bit carried away.

Obviously, huge giant enormous WIP warning here but here's a still from the test shot:

wow, how did you make those clouds?

10 October 2009, 03:34 PM
sweet shot - how did u make them clouds?

10 October 2009, 03:38 PM
thanks guys.

The clouds are afterburn with some tweaking in post.

Ok, so I've decided on a giant floating city. So the camera will fly down through the clouds revealing this massive city that was ripped from the earth. airships, balloons and planes OH MY

Here's a quickie lunch-time block out of what I'm thinking. I'm definitely going for more stylization in the buildings later. Please consider this a very rough sketch of the idea.

Oooh, I like where you are going with this

Same Here.

Oooh, I like where you are going with this

10 October 2009, 01:55 PM
Thanks guys :)

Here's a short playblast of what I'm thinking. Let it be known that I'm a miserable animator, and I'll be tweaking movements and timing till the last minute. Please feel free to give me feedback in this department when necessary.

Since the animation portion is going to be in progress till the end, I think I'm going to start the modeling phase next.

that's nice! may i be a stickler though and ask if those big balloons are holding up the city? If so shouldn't the wait pull the lines taught straight up and down? Obviously just getting started but thought i'd be that guy and ask :) Keep it up!

Yeah, you get the right idea. The whole city and tech structure stuff is not thought out yet. This is just meant as a guide really. There will definitely be some more logical mechanics to how the heck a city/island is self-sustained and floating in the sky :)

10 October 2009, 08:43 PM
Wow, this is a great idea! I love it

OK, here we go. I spent a few minutes tonight and put together a little mockup. Its toooootally not a matte painting, the perspective and lighting weirdness is really obvious, .. it's just for looks and planning. I work a lot better if I can put together a visual 'goal'. I wish I had awesome matte painting skills, though :P

Also, zeppelins are missing because I'm still working out a concept for what they will look like (like everything else!)

Right now I'm on a building modeling frenzy, should get some images up shortly.

Just letting everyone know I'm still around. I'm currently finishing up modeling the island, I'll post some test renders later tonight. It's been a crazy learning process, as I've never really sculpted much before.

I'm also working on concepts for the flying devices, and building more city pieces.

This is looking very unique and artistic.
Great job so far, keep it up as awesome as you did it so far.

11 November 2009, 04:48 AM
Thanks guys!

Unfortunately things have been kind of crazy at work and home, so it looks like I wont be able to get this done in time for the deadline. I do plan on finishing it though - just not enough time this month.

Good luck to the rest of you guys though :)

Ok talk to me...
How much time do you need?

11 November 2009, 04:54 AM
With all the work I'm doing, I doubt I'll even be able to work on it again until after December.

11 November 2009, 06:38 AM
Bummer man, but hey! That image you posted looks pretty great as it is. Glad to see that you aren't giving up on it! Looking forward to seeing how it progresses! Keep it up!
