View Full Version : How should I go about modeling this object?

I'm using 3Ds max and I'm trying to model this sofa:

What do you suggest for modeling this?

The hardest part is getting the curve in the corner

I've tried a couple things:

Extruding polygons to make the general shape and then chamfering. Somehow it seems to screw up.

Making a box with a a lot of edges and then using subtract boolean with a extruded line that I drew following the form of the sofa. With this I can get one curve or the other, I can't get both.

Making a box with a a lot of edges then using soft selection to pull areas down.
Wasn't as smooth as needed and messed up on the sides.

If you could give me a new idea on how to do this or tell me how to get one of the ideas I had to work that would be awesome.

First start with a box, convert to editable poly and extrude in the direction show in upper image. lower part of the image show you the basic mesh in red and supporting line in green. The lines are ugly, I know. Hehe~ I'm not good drawing with mouse :P (

If you want to stick with box modeling, create the "base" using polygon cube and just worry about the side profile first and getting the curvature right by adding more resolution as you go. Once you're happy with it, extrude the backrest and just move vertices around to maintain the smooth curvature.

Gave it a go and came up with this kind of mesh, maybe it will point you in right direction:

modeled it using a plane with the edge extrude is the .obj-

but how do i smooth it from there?

turbo smooth makes things too smooth

Just add edge loops near the corners or camfer them, both methods work just fine.
To make it tighter, move edges closer to each other or even add another edge loop. To loosen it up, just do the opposite.

I'd use Loft to create it. It would need only about three different shapes.
