View Full Version : "Deliverator" Short Film WIP

10 October 2009, 05:00 PM
This is the official concept art production thread for “The Deliverator” — a 3D short film based on excerpts from Neal Stephensen’s Snow Crash. In this thread I'll be posting concept art developed for the project.

What is the Deliverator Project?

“Deliverator” will be a high-speed, high-thrills, high-stakes race through a futuristic cityscape. Fast cars! Robot Hover Police! Explosions! Pizza Delivery!

… pizza delivery?

The Deliverator is a pizza-wielding member of an elite order, a hallowed sub-category. He stands tall, your pizza pie delivered in thirty minutes or less or you can:

• Shoot the driver

• Take his car

• File a class-action lawsuit

If the client doesn't kill the deliverator for a late pizza, then his boss, Uncle Enzo, definitely will.

This is America, after all. You deserve a hot pizza along with Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

When our hero finds himself with a twenty-minute old pizza and fifteen miles to go, can he make his delivery to save his life?

I guess we’ll find out.

I am extremely pleased to announce that we have three fantastic concept artists working on this project now:

Charles Woods (

Jake Ekiss ( and

Lorin Wood ( (

I'll be posting some of their work as we go along, and the director's comments for each iteration as well. I'm hoping that when all is said and done, this thread will serve as a behind-the-scenes of our process, even if it's not ideal.

This is Charles Woods' ( first iteration of Hiro Protagonist, the aptly-named hero of our story.

This was our reply:

I think the overall feeling that we have is "less Nascar, more biker ninja." I realize it wouldn't make much sense to have biker gear inside a car, but that's where we're leaning for the style. The end result will be an almost entirely black suit, so it may just be the value contrast in the sketch that's throwing us off. I think the fabric of his uniform should be closer to a leather consistency. Right now it seems a bit crumpled, a bit scrunchy. I would ask you to consider perhaps the design of Wolverine's suit in the first X-Men movie. I do however like the idea of having hardware as part of the suit -- something to protect the spine, perhaps? I did a little digging, and I found this: I like the "carapace" on the back, makes for a very interesting concept. Also, I definitely would like to see the pants tucked into his boots.

Again, I'm nitpicking here, and the overall idea is spot-on. I'm sure a lot of changes will be made during the modeling phase anyways, just due to necessity.

Charles came back with this almost immediately, and boy were we excited when we saw the next round.

Starting with Hiro again - I made a few mods to the suit, and I feel like the color / tone was probably what was throwing the 'look' off. The suit is not really NASCAR with the black leather and hard points. That was a good reference find on the motorcycle suit Ed, you can see in my update that I incorporated the plated carapace into the abdomen, and would likely do the same on the back for the model sheet. Also, tucked the pants by erasing the overlap out, left intentionally vague at this point, details are only suggested as a utility boot. I also threw some subtle color into the overall image and am trying to establish a lighting direction to help bring out form, but it's tricky with the suit supposed to be black all over...hmmm....I dunno, you think this is closer to what's in your head for this guy? I worked on the face a little bit too - black guy, but with very asian eyelids and heavy eyebrows. I'm trying not to be too racially stereo-typical here, so let me know if I'm too far overboard with the racial cues. As you said though, everything will change through the modeling phase.

Between this and some of the other concept art, I'm feeling extremely happy thus far. I'll be posting more as we go along.

Here are a few head studies done by Charles Woods ( ( ) of Hiro Protagonist.

... Which I then liquefied in Photoshop because I thought he looked a bit too young. The rest is just our back-and-forth with the head study.

thanks! I can't begin to say just how happy I've been with my concept artists.

ubercool you managed to snag Lorin Wood. I think I spotted Lorin's vehicle concept done for your project...very nice work.

Here's some concept art by Ricardo Orellana, one of my co-conspirators in this project. He's taken ownership of the antagonist helicopter design and modeling. His website can be found here (

This is a concept of the Deliverator's car interior, by the fantastic Lorin Wood, a visual consultant for Gearbox Software. His site can be found here (

He'll also be designing some concepts for the HUD of the vehicle.

Again, his site is here. (

Is there a script? If there is is it just an abridged version of the chapters dealing with the delivery or will it be a take on the setup from Neil?
Exerpts from snowcrash dont feature a police dropship, unless you take into account the police that Y.T. skates past on her way to deliver the pizza.
Is Y.T. in the short also.
I may come onboard if so, and do a concept or two and some character modelling if time permits.

Airflow - We are adapting the first and third chapter of the book, which is pretty much just the delivery at the start of the novel. We are making a few changes, mainly to expand the primary action. The police dropship is more of a lark than anything else, something to provide an eye-in-the-sky perspective to the environment and the chase.

YT is definitely in the film, and I have a couple of concept sketches of her already; even Uncle Enzo makes a brief appearance!

I have a film treatment here: (

Our semi-official production blog is here:
If you're interested in coming on board, we are currently really focusing on concept art. I have an artist working on YT and Hiro, but we could really use concepts for environments, props, vehicles, or Uncle Enzo.

01 January 2010, 10:15 AM
Yeah, I was mainly interested in working on Y.T. concept and digital model and perhaps hiro's digital model.
I can do enviroments and other stuff but I am interested in stuff that will fit my reel, which can also help you out. Thats character concepts and models.
So I could take on Uncle E' but would also like a go at an alternative version of Y.T. as I think the suit could be problematic.

Found some interesting stuff from this TastyCake guy on deviantart.
Tasty (

Sure thing. We'd be absolutely interested in an alternative version of YT, but no guarantees that it will end up in the film. At the very least, we'd love to see whatever concepts you come up with!

Charles Woods ( ( made this for us:

Hopefully, we'll be getting final model sheets some time soon, and we can start modeling out our character assets.

Looks really cool.
If its Ok, Ill do my alternative using this as a template.

Looking forward to seeing your concept for Y.T. Robert!

01 January 2010, 05:37 PM
Sounds good to me. Best to have a few different options available.

01 January 2010, 05:39 PM
Heyo! I completely missed you there, Mr. Woods!

The Internets! What fun!

Beautiful concept work Charles.
Stating the obvious, but can't help it...admirer. :applause:

Should have somthing to show by the weekend.

Concept art by Desmond Blair.

Its very rushed, had a paid job last weekend.
Was going for a more futuristic look, as the book mentioned "Coveralls", armoured sintered gel knee pads, a cervical inflatable collar.
The shorter more punk look hair and the rubber/heavy wear look went more with my Idea of YT.
Hopefully it can either give you ideas for a more designed look before you get set for modelling.

Sorry it's taking me so long to get back with you, very busy at the moment. I'll have some time tomorrow, though.

Thanks for the concept!

I'm a huge fan of Snow Crash, so this is really awesome to see. If you guys need some extra help with something and you think I'd be a good fit, give me a jingle.

Very nice work so far by the way. The concepts for YT and Hiro looking good!

having a bit of fun in Photoshop. Introducing the new working-title card for Deliverator.

The project is dead. Long live the project.

We have received the elbow from the sky -- Neal Stephenson's film agent has officially told me that we cannot derive our short film from Snow Crash. I kinda figured that might happen, but we're not dead yet. We're now working on an original story that can use many the assets and tools that we've already developed -- and with the creative and distribution rights firmly in hand, we can look at a variety of grants to help us fund the project.

I'll be starting new threads for the next incarnation of the project, whatever it may become. You're all invited to follow along. Thanks for the support.
