View Full Version : FXWars! QUEEN OF HE ROCKETMEN!: Karabo Legwaila, Single Shot Entry

10 October 2009, 09:02 PM
Ok, I'm in. I'm planning on this being a single shot entry but it could possibly turn into a couple of shots. Hopefully I will have time to finish it. Updates coming soon.

I'm still trying to nail down some kind of story but I think that I will probably be using this car model that I made a while back. It's from a little after the time period of the 1930s but I might use it anyway. I'm thinking I might have a plane trying to shoot it from the air. Think of the cliche movie shot where a plane is shooting at a moving car and the bullets hit on either side of the car causing dust puffs as it speeds by. Maybe one or two bullets hit the car causing shards of glass to go flying. This might a be a good FX shot to try.

This is the current progress on the plane. It's based on the Fokker D23 ( I'm not trying to make it perfectly accurate. I will take liberties with the design. I like the design of this plane with it's dual propellers, one in the front, one in the back.

I will post updates when I can. Good luck to all that have joined the challenge.

Nice progress man looking forward to seeing what you get done.

I got a little time to put some work in so here's an update. Fleshed out the wings and finished most of the paneling on the body. Also added the 24 exhaust pipes and the windows on top of the cockpit. Still a lot of work to do on it. I don't know how detailed I'm going to get with the interior yet. Depends on the animation I decide on.

Cool plane concept karabo (! The enemy won't know if he is coming or going :).

10 October 2009, 07:30 AM
nice modeling Karabo, the plane looks great!

tiny update. Started fleshing out the tails.

10 October 2009, 01:58 PM
Good stuff mate looking good!

I was just looking at your PC specs, nice machine mate! Where did you get that from?

It's an upgraded Dell workstation. The RAM's a bit of a waste though because even when I'm doing full blown Realflow sims with over 7 million particles, it only uses about 7GB.

10 October 2009, 04:13 AM
worked on the tails some more and started adding detail. Still some stuff to do and also need to add the wing that runs between the two tails.

10 October 2009, 09:13 PM
Exterior is getting close to being done. Just have some stuff to finish on the tail and also finish the propellers.

10 October 2009, 04:20 PM
Working on the underside. I carved out the landing gear panels and I'm detailing the inside of the front landing gear bay and also modeling the front landing gear.

10 October 2009, 06:11 PM
Awesome...I am loving the plane's design!

10 October 2009, 05:34 PM
haven't had much time to work on this lately but I did do a little work on the landing gear. Also did a render test to try out motion blur on the blades and see how the mesh looks lit.

10 October 2009, 05:40 PM
Oooo looking great mate!

10 October 2009, 09:51 PM
Ok, so this is kinda the idea I had in mind. I was thinking of doing a battle between my planes and the awesome airship that Mike Hanson aka japetus kindly allowed me to use. Of course when I looked at the airship model, I was blown away by the amount of detail that Mike had put into it. I quickly came to realize that there's no way I could do anything decent in the time we have with the little spare time I have so I'm going to simplify things a little to ensure that I get this done. Thanks Mike for letting me use your model but it would take me years to properly animate all the guns and turrets on that airship and planes and then do effects (tracer fire, smoke passes, bullet hits, damage etc.) for them too. It would have been incredible but with my limited spare time I would never do it justice.
Another issue is that the airship was modeled in Max and getting it into Maya was proving to be a pain in the arse. The provided obj files were not working right. As much as I love Max, I haven't used it seriously in years because I've been using Maya so it would take me too long to get back up to speed in Max.
Here's a pic showing what I had wanted to do.

Anyway, so now I'm going to try come up with a different plan that I can manage in the time allotted.
Updates will follow.

10 October 2009, 10:25 PM
Sorry to hear that Karabo but I'm sure you'll come up with something just as stunning.

Good luck fella.

10 October 2009, 10:33 PM
Hey, sorry to hear about your max problems. If you want I can try exporting an fbx of the airship. I can't remember if I included one in the zip or not. Let me know... it's looking really awesome! Can't wait to see what you do!

10 October 2009, 01:44 PM
Well I dug up a pilot for the plane! He's an old character I did a couple years back. The "Skinny Barefoot Assassin With a Bionic Arm and a Nazi Helmet and Gas Mask!!" I remembered that I had rigged him some time ago so he will have to suffice as my pilot  I don't need him to do much, I just need a body in the cockpit so the plane doesn't look like it's flying itself!

10 October 2009, 04:34 PM
Hahaha...awesome... I can't wait!! :buttrock:

10 October 2009, 08:26 PM
Haha good stuff!

10 October 2009, 06:03 PM
Landing gear is almost done and then I will put some guns on her. I'm thinking that I'm gonna bolt some big guns to the underside of the wings to make her look cooler.
A friend of mine, Victor Garcia (vg1 on the forums) is working on textures for the body right now so that's gonna look great when it's done.

10 October 2009, 07:07 PM
moving right along, looking good!

10 October 2009, 09:24 AM
Very well detailed and robust craft! Hope to see that you are as patient with texturing!
Looking forward to see more!

10 October 2009, 05:01 AM
Started playing with some animation. I think I'm gonna have a few shots instead of just one. Background is temporary for the playblast. The animation is still very basic at the moment. (

Great start mate looking forward to some more! ;0)

10 October 2009, 04:01 PM
Laid out another shot. As in the previous shot, the background is just a temporary image. (

Got time to rig my car model. It's nothing fancy but it will get the job done. All the suspension works and the front wheels are connected to the steering wheel. I didn't rig the doors to open since I probably won't be opening them in the animation. It shouldn't take long to add that functionality if I end up needing it though. All the geometry is skinned to joints so I will be able to cache the geo in a geometry cache when animation is done so I can get rid of the rig.

10 October 2009, 09:37 PM
I dug up another old character that I was working on a while back. I might possibly use her as the "Queen" if I can find the time to rig her and make her new clothes. I'm thinking that I will put her in the plane and have the other character driving the car. That way, I can make her an old school pilot cap to hide the fact that she has no hair!

10 October 2009, 09:01 PM
this is looking really good man!

Very inspiring work. I can't wait to see you get to the texturing/lighting phase.

10 October 2009, 02:55 PM
Started working on my set a little. This is the road that the car is going to be driving on at high speed trying to dodge bullets from the plane. Still a lot to go. There is going to be a sharp drop off the side of the road without the wall. Think of roads on side of mountains. Mountain on one side, cliff on the other.

This is the view of the whole road

Some closeups

10 October 2009, 09:47 PM
dude great work ... keep this going ... really looking forward to see it done ..

10 October 2009, 03:04 AM
Finally got down to putting guns on the plane. I set them up to fire particles that are set up to render as tubes to simulate tracer fire. Also added emitters to simulate muzzle flashes.
I also had time to finally put a proper rig into the model. I'm gonna get seriously into animation now.

And the rig...

10 October 2009, 04:26 AM
awesome! I love that plane...keep it up!!

10 October 2009, 11:40 PM
Started laying out a new shot. Still very early. (

11 November 2009, 01:57 PM
Didn't have much time to work on this lately but I did have time to do a render test video to test out the tracer fire and propeller motion blur. As you can see the motion blur sucks because mental ray sucks! The props become transparent at one point. Anyone know they best way to render this properly? (

11 November 2009, 06:49 PM
I think the motion blur is just looks like you have it spinning at all sorts of different rates. There were some points where the propeller looked great, if you give it a consistent rotation then I think it will look great.

11 November 2009, 01:16 PM
wow... great going man... just loved your updates :)

11 November 2009, 08:25 AM wow!!! great works man. can't wait to see your finished work. it must be awesome. thumbs up for you

12 December 2009, 02:10 AM
I haven't really had any time to work on my entry seriously so no updates, but I did find a nice cinematic that I thought really fit with the Queen of the Rocketmen challenge. Check it out! (

12 December 2009, 10:30 AM
I checked out the cinematic. It would make a good entry.:)

12 December 2009, 11:15 AM
Heh heh that's funny man some of those shots are in my anim!
Just wish I could have done it to that quality! Nice trailer tho.

12 December 2009, 02:48 PM
Oh well, I never got to finish before the deadline but that's ok because I'm still working on it. I have gone back to the modeling stage on the plane because I want to make it better. I'm planning on doing a short animation of the plane taking off and flying around. I have added a cockpit and the total poly count for the whole model is upwards of 730,000 polys unsmoothed. About 300,000 of that came from the hand placed rivets I put on it. Each rivet is only 56 polys so you can imagine how many are on there!

Here are images of the cockpit as it stands right now.

I will not update this thread again. I will instead create a new thread in the WIP section of the forum.

12 December 2009, 02:59 PM
Bro that is intense WOW :bounce:

12 December 2009, 06:33 PM
Woa that's an insane amount of detail you got there, beautiful! Maybe not so render friendly though :)

12 December 2009, 06:51 PM
Sweet cockpit! 56 polys seems like a lot for the rivets, but once you figure out your anim you could cut them down to size. Really like your modeling on this!
