I'm not new to 3d modelling, but my background is CAD modelling. I want to try some 3d printing and model some nice furniture. But I have no idea how to model a product like this:

Is this made by polygon modeling? I've worked with maya, but only nurbs. Somehow this model seems to be of such complexity, I wouldn't know how to model this. Can someone shed some light on this subject and help me out?

I'm not asking for a tutorial or something, but just an insight in how to model such an object.

Technically it's not difficult to model. The most difficult part is making sense of the pattern, if you want a pretty close replica of course.

I would model that starting with splines and convert them to polygons, merge where needed.
