08 August 2003, 07:19 PM
hey, nice modeling T4D. Really puts mine ( too shame (shameless plug of my thread, sorry). Any advance on the storyline? Keep up the good work!!

Thats just amusing, the clothing fits him perfectly as well, the only thing that seems a bit odd are the shoes, maybe something a bit more clowny would suit him better...just a thought.
What soft you using to animate?

08 August 2003, 12:47 AM
Lightwave ALL THE WAY !!!!
shoes will be improved with everything else as i go.
always fine turning in LW :buttrock:

Clown fights spotlight to stay on him.. ;)

still working on weight maps for armpit thing
and face morphs.
should posting a test animation in the next few days :wip:

08 August 2003, 09:55 AM
Two words: AWE-SOME !

The lighting improved its look a lot. Apears to be almost photorealistic at first glance.

The idea with the spotlight is great as well! I'm looking forward for this one :)

08 August 2003, 12:18 PM

08 August 2003, 06:40 AM
very nice looking!

If I may make a suggestion, though, wouldn't it be more like a carnival to have the spotlight coming down on him from the ceiling?

Hey T, very good job u've done there, love it, apart from playing with the curves i think u pretty much there, there was a couple o comments.. 1st when he falls down his feet keep moving/sliding as he's flat on the floor..2nd perhaps u should give a bit more of an antecipation when is grabbing the spot lite with his stick, he should put more effort to pull the lite towards him.

on another note.. i like the black and white scratched look, but i thought the colourful character was a much stronger image..

well done

08 August 2003, 02:10 AM
Thanks Gru:thumbsup:

i see the same things nice to hear it from someone else
i will post a color version soon, at the moment i'm editing the model and will post another version in a day or 2 :)

08 August 2003, 10:51 AM
Heya, the anmation is funny. Though there are still some issues which make it look odd.
First of all, like Gru said, the falling looks strange. It is very slow and the character moves alot while falling.

Overall the feet do not "walk". They slide on the surface.

Anticipation: Also when he's sliding from left to right, he looks very stiff.

Check the curves. The motion looks very blocky.

I would suggest you go through the animation in good old pose to pose manner. Only draw the importent poses first and add more and more inbetweens later on. Check Keith Langos tutorial it's brilliant.

Hope it helps a bit. Keep it up :wavey:

Looking better...still some issues but I like it much better than the previous one. Can't wait to see your updates next month.

The color looks better as well. Much more lively.

Nice work. Keep it up

another update i think it looks better,

thinking need to take one of the swings out to give more time to everything and slow thinks down abit :hmm:
tells us what you think :wip:

08 August 2003, 03:38 AM
Heya T4!

Great improvement in motion!
First of all I like the color. But IMO the shading is pretty dark almost black! Although you might want to simulate one light source consider the plane behind the clown. It will reflect the light on the clown so an additional backlight would work better probably. But these isn't most important in animation challenge anyhow ;)

So now to the motion:
I watched the first fall over and over again and tried to imagine how to improve it. I know you added a little bouncing of the torso / head but what about the legs? I mean it's a clown after all so I would expect his legs to raise to the air when he reached the ground. This would probably also help to make it look more like a falling than a sliding to the ground. Don't be afraid to experiment with extremes. He can even slip of so he is in the air completely and not only sliding. Hope you can imagine what I think of.

Now the standing up: Look at it frame by frame. Though it looks as if he was pushing his body away form the ground it looks unnatural beacuse there is not enough force behind the push. Normally we try set our center of mass to the front while standing up. Try it. Sit on the ground and try to stand up using one hand. You will notice that you raise the other hand to the front and try to get the torso as far as possible to the front. This would also prevent the "sliding up".

I like the pull of the spotlight pretty much.

Next thing that i noticed is the stick bouning on his head. Looks kind of strange, check the curves and consider some good old bouncing ball tutorials to get it more realistic. I think the main problem is that it stay too long in the high position where it rotates. Try to get the rotation earlier. Maybe it falls down to his hand too slow, play around with it.

When hangin' on the spotlight and flying through the air try to losen his body, maybe a little "secondary motion" on the legs/arms help. He looks pretty stiff.

Only thing I really dislike in the animation is the sliding from the air to the right of the screen on the ground. It is mainly because the speed is pretty linear and should slow out more and beacuse again the body is stiff and tehre is no secondary motion going on the body parts. You wouldn't stop that hard, your legs and head would follow the direction of speed more until the whole body stops. Also try to underline the weighting in the opposite direction (left), eg on the hips.

And last but not least: The run of the clown is very blocky and rough.

Ok sorry for dumping you. I only tried to write down all things I noticed and give a try to solve the problem with the help of the priciples of animation. Of course not every detail I mentioned must be changed but this may be usefull as a guide to find some "bugs". We all know how frustrating it can become to look at one piece over and over again. You easily miss some points.

Hope this helps you

08 August 2003, 03:43 AM
Follow through is the term is was looking for instead of secondary motion. Please excuse me

08 August 2003, 04:51 AM
Big Thanks Milho

i see all your points and I'll keep working on it :)

the comp's deadline is still a months away so got heaps of time:wip: only working on it at night should have another version in afew days :)

09 September 2003, 01:04 PM
Hahahaha I love it so much! I was laughing out loud by the end... classic! My main crit is at about the 7.5 second mark where I guess he is stepping over the spotlight? It's a bit unclear as to what he's doing exactly, and looks a bit odd. Otherwise it's looking great!

09 September 2003, 02:07 AM
Well done T, u getting there alright.
there are a few things that need a bit of work tho..
-the way he gets up, is very weird, theres no weight at all on the action, it seems that he sort o floats and all of the suden is standing up.
-the hat (and stick) seem to get lost in outer space far too long, I counted sum 55 frames for the hat alone and then it comes down like theres a feather like thing.
-and my final point... a bit more animation on the hands/fingers would bring him alive a bit more, he feels too rigid all the time, even tho he keeps moving around, now that the over all animation is pretty much there, try sum overlaping, follow trough and sec. motion, too help break all that stiffness.

Dude most of the hard work has been done, now u just have to polish those corners and make it into a great animation short..

all the best

09 September 2003, 01:06 PM
It's looking really good T4D!

Its been mentioned before, but when the clown stomps on the light to widen it it needs a bit more Oomph, some resistance and weight to make it look like his foot is pushing that light open.

Looking forward to more updates.

another update finger issues fixed motion tidy up & abit more 99.5% complete :D

09 September 2003, 10:46 AM
hummm! still dont like the way that the hat and stick come down, far too slow, they seem weightless, coming down almost floating.
come on T, take it into the 99.75% complete...

09 September 2003, 12:32 PM
LOL yes Gru ;)

i posted the animation to my local lighwave Oz group
and got a whole new level of comment
so let's bring that last post back to 96% and i'll post the 99% one in the morning maybe afternoon once i fix the the hat and cane falling

Thats actually pretty damn cool. I really like how you made the spotlight a secondary character. The motion is generally pretty good.

Keep it up.

09 September 2003, 01:31 AM
I literally laughed out loud.. I think we have a winner ;-)

09 September 2003, 11:38 PM
THanks Speve-O & gmask

got some time today to do alittle more work on it, post link later

I think we have a winner ;-)

Thanks But I don't think so,... Baby toon character really looks great !! nice to see what he edits it to. to fit in the 20 seconds

once the comp is finished i will be expanding it out to maybe 30 or 40 seconds, need more time to for intro & really show his emotions duing the animation.

anyways another update is coming
