10-01-2009, 06:30 PM
I'm planing on using as many models as I can get my hands on for this.
I've got no idea how it's going to go or how long we've got to do this but hopefully I'll get something worthy out.

Just looking out for a good storyboard right now so get em up guys n Gals.

Good luck everyone.

Good luck!

10-11-2009, 10:08 PM
Just a few scenes I've been working on, not bad progress after one week.

Hope you like em

10-11-2009, 10:10 PM
More scenes. Nothings final just playing with shots & timing still.

10-14-2009, 05:37 PM
Another shot I'm working on.

10-14-2009, 05:46 PM
Cool!! I think the hoses should definately move a lot less. Right now they feel like they are light and thin and don't have much inside of them. In reality they are probably thick bundles of wires and tubes which doesn't move very much even with that type of impact.

10-14-2009, 10:31 PM
I agree about the hoses moving too much. Other than that, it's looking pretty sweet. You work hella fast!

10-15-2009, 09:50 AM
Thanks guys I'll sort that out as soon as I can ;0)

10-17-2009, 12:41 PM
Just some screen grabs I got a lot of animation done this week but there is of course still major amounts to still do!!!
Hope you enjoy peeps.

10-17-2009, 01:11 PM
Wow this is really looking sweet.
How did you do the gun muzzle flash?

10-17-2009, 06:07 PM
Thanks Karabo. The muzzle flash was done using After Effects.

10-17-2009, 06:46 PM
Oh man! This looks awesome!! I like the people a lot, the style is coming along nicely. I'm excited to see it moving!

10-17-2009, 07:29 PM
Hey thanks Mike!
Fingers crossed I can pull it all together for a great finish. I'm not an animator but the stuff I've been pulling out the last week hasn't been to bad so I'll post some up soon.

Of course it helps having some great models from you & Giorgio! So thanks for that guys.

10-19-2009, 03:34 PM
you are wellcome :) Keep going !!

10-19-2009, 09:07 PM

10-23-2009, 04:39 AM

Curious why I even bother with the challenge :P

11-04-2009, 06:22 PM
Thanks Lee! Nothings going right at the moment & I've had some work to do the last few weeks hopefully I'll be able to finish it all to a high standard.

11-04-2009, 07:55 PM
This is coming along really well. Awesome! :)

11-05-2009, 08:56 PM
fantastic !! I'm so proud to see my jetpack in such a wonderful shot !

11-05-2009, 11:31 PM
Giorgio thanks, but be prepared to be more proud ;0)

11-17-2009, 04:45 PM
Not long left to go now & I'm starting to panic! It takes so much time to set up Scenes, Materials, Lighting then render it all I haven't even started on any explosions yet!

So here's another update of some rendered scenes.

Take it easy fella's.

11-17-2009, 05:23 PM
Wow!! Even those stills are looking really great. I'm very excited to see this! It looks like it will be a lot of fun to watch :) :)

11-17-2009, 05:33 PM

It almost looks like a graphic novel.

Great work man.

11-17-2009, 11:53 PM
Cheers fella's it's really good to hear that!
I'm pretty sure I'll run out of time but I'm trying to get everything rendered then go back & do all the FX.

This is an animated Storyboard for myself to help with my entry. I used a few of my favorite artists see the list below.

JollyJack -
Porco Russo -
The Rocketeer - (
The Rocketeer - (

I've tried to find out how to embed Youtube on here but it seems like a pain so here's the link.

Thanks Guys

11-18-2009, 06:21 AM

This is looking great so far, and it's a great inspiration.
Don't give it up man! I know it's a huge job, but you're going so great, and I can't wait to see this finished.
Gotta check out your portfolio.

Keep it up!

11-27-2009, 11:39 AM
Not much of an update today I've been rendering a lot & calculating explosion for the final shots. With the extra 2 weeks hopefully I can get it all finished in time & use some left over time to re render some bits I'm not happy with & work more into the comping.

Thanks guys

11-27-2009, 05:18 PM
man those explosions look amazing.

11-27-2009, 05:19 PM
Oh by the way, how do you render out your motion blur, I seem to be having trouble with mine :(

11-27-2009, 05:27 PM
Thanks mate hopefully they're animate just as good too ;0)

Motion blur, depends, what programs are you using? Maya, Max? AfterFX, Fusion, Nuke? What are you blurring a plane propeller or a character?

11-27-2009, 05:56 PM
Well I am rendering in passes, from Maya, I render out a normal map, but I cant find an option in after effects to use the normal map for bluring.

11-27-2009, 06:53 PM
A normal pass won't work for Motion blur you need to use a vector pass it kinda looks the same.

I don't use Maya but check the link below for a tut. Usually in AfterFX people use a plugin called RealMotion Blur but I don't know how to do it without the plugin. I'm sure there is an option in AfterFX if I find it I'll give you a link but I think the tut below the guy uses AfterFX so it should have everything you need!

11-27-2009, 09:05 PM
Thanks alot :) i will check it out. I am still a noob, so all of these techniques are new to me, I have an image in my head of how I want everything to be, but I am not always sure how to go about it. :(

11-27-2009, 10:22 PM
Happy to help mate.
I think that's the same for everyone even the masters! Each shot is different so you can't know everything right!

12-08-2009, 09:37 PM
Ok guys here's my previz. (

12-08-2009, 10:58 PM
cool are you still trying to finish by the 16th?

12-09-2009, 12:40 AM
Looks great Stevie. High gear for one week.:)

12-09-2009, 09:36 AM
really cool previz, it will be a super sequence :)

12-09-2009, 11:41 AM
Well to tell you the truth guys since I was aiming for last Wed (the original date) I've more or less finished but I'm working the colours etc in post & re rendering bits I'm not too keen on or where I think I can improve.

I hope you all like the final piece ;0)

Good luck to everyone, & if you need help put up a post & might be able to help in some way.

12-09-2009, 02:49 PM
Looks good :D

12-10-2009, 11:16 AM
That was freaking epic! WOW....

12-10-2009, 04:31 PM
Glad it's going down well guys! ;0)

12-10-2009, 06:29 PM
Wow, as Kogden said, EPIC!! Great job with the animation and framing of the shots. Has a really polished feel to it

12-10-2009, 07:43 PM
Hey Stevie, one quick comment I just realized as I was rewatching: at 0:35 i didn't realize until the 3rd or 4th time watching that the guy in the chair signaling the airplanes was outside on the wing. Maybe you could have one more quick establishing shot or reframe it a little so that we realize more where he is? Maybe it was your intent to hide that, and/or it will be more apparent when it's not gray world :) Just a tiny critique, otherwise it's a lot of fun to watch!

12-10-2009, 09:23 PM
Hey Mike sorry bud I'd have loved to have used more of your airship in the animation it all came down to getting the shot that shows the planes crash into the side of the airship later on.

In full colour you can see the blue sky & a logo on the side of the airship. If I had more time I would have spent more time thinking about shots but I just didn't have the time to sort it.

thanks mate.

12-10-2009, 10:27 PM
This is looking spectacular! Let me know if you need any help with anything. I'm itching to do something, but couldn't commit to this challenge.

12-10-2009, 10:43 PM
Dude thats really cool!

Good luck getting it done on time, looks really good. Very impressive.

12-11-2009, 08:49 AM
I love it! especially the part where she(?) flies through the airship's props

12-11-2009, 11:14 AM
Woh I'm so pleased everyone likes it!!!

I love it! especially the part where she(?) flies through the airship's props
I was so lucky there, after animating the props & then the girl flying close/through them the props rotation actually matched her not getting hit! images/icons/icon10.gif

Thanks for the comments guys I really appreciate them.

12-11-2009, 05:54 PM

No prob, there is so much work you've done I understand, it's all about how you get to the final result. I'm just happy that it was useful to you!

12-12-2009, 01:05 PM
As a bonus to the competition I've done 4 posters to lead up to the final dates so keep checking back for the next installment!

These will be available 2000x3000 if I get enough interest. ;0)

12-12-2009, 02:35 PM

12-13-2009, 11:40 AM
Thanks Jeremy. ;0)

12-13-2009, 12:12 PM
Nice job agian I like the pop art feel of the poster.

12-14-2009, 11:29 AM
Thanks again Jeremy & for checking back! ;0)

12-14-2009, 02:11 PM
Just a run test using a BVH sprint file.

12-15-2009, 10:26 AM
There's one more poster after this & it's the end of the competition tomorrow so good luck to everyone & thanks for the support.

12-15-2009, 11:11 AM
This is the best one yet. :D

12-15-2009, 07:08 PM
Thanks mate, I think I like this one the most too. ;0)

Last one & my final piece is up. I'm a bit down about having another 3 days added to the deadline at the last minute I would have used that if I'd known a week ago.

Thanks for all the kind words & support guys good luck to all & Merry Christmas! images/icons/icon10.gif

12-15-2009, 09:14 PM
I don't think you have anything to worry about. I have been following the FXwars for about a year now, and I think that you have set a new standard of quality. :bounce:
I think we have a winner here.

12-15-2009, 10:37 PM
Wow thanks Dan but I still think there's loads of competition still out there including yours! I've seen a few test/previews which were looking pretty promising.

Thanks mate, means a lot ;0)

12-16-2009, 01:11 PM
Terrific entry Stevie. Lots of action.

12-16-2009, 08:17 PM

The rest I modeled myself.

Thanks again guys have a great XMas.

12-17-2009, 05:45 PM
Great job on that Stevie, I really enjoyed watching it! Made me wish for a Rocketeer reboot :)

12-17-2009, 06:18 PM
Thanks Mike I probably wouldn't have bothered without the Models you guys put up it would have been too much to do.

Glad you liked it ;0)

12-22-2009, 11:24 AM
Wow! You have done some amazing work on this. Style, pace, layout, animation and effects all enhance the piece. The only thing that I could criticize is that you could have made the introduction of the airship, and it's shadow, more ominous, perhaps cut to shot of people on the ground looking up as the shadow passes across their faces, but considering what you have achieved you can just throw that comment straight in the bin.
Great stuff all around! :applause:

01-07-2010, 04:55 AM
well done.

01-07-2010, 05:12 AM
Yeah!! Congrats on the well deserved award Stevie!!
