I'm entering the challenge this time, I'm planning to do a 20-30 second single shot with an airbattle between some rocketmen and fighter airplanes.

The previs is done. It took longer than I expected, animating the rocketmen and camera turned out to be quite a challenge. Now I will work on the other stuff like airplanes, gunfire and explosions.

Wow Philipp, I know its only the beginning but I think you got off to a great start.

Great job so far! It's so cool seeing it all come alive. Stevie and Abednego...check your PM's i updated the airship model export, it had some problems that I realized only after viewing the footage here. Sorry!

I finished texturing the rockettrooper. (

Nice job! Looks very menacing

You are using the hyperlink command, and you need to use Insert Image command. Move 3 icons over to the right and you'll get images to show up

You did a good job on texturing him! The dial on the chest is a nice touch and I like the red eyes!

I worked on some particle experiments, I never really used Thinking Particles and Pyrocluster before, so it was a lot of trial and error.

Tracer Fire (

AA Gun (

It got really frustrating after a while and to get my mind off of it, I started modelling an airplane.

Yay! The image is showing!! :thumbsup: But I used the image command before, I think my webspace was messing it up.

I think you did a great job with the particles mate. They turned out good, just a bit more tweaking in post would make them fit quite well!

@Ferdi-Willemse: Yes you're right, I forgot about that. As far as I know, WW2 airplanes had an adjustable gun focus.

@karabo. The muzzleflash is a pyrocluster material assigned to a particle with a lifetime of one frame. I guess the same thing would work with sprites in a particle emitter.

What he his useing is Cebas plugin Pryocluster. It does the same thing as afterburn if thats what your used to using it will do the trick.

Another update!

I textured the airship and finally figured out how to do a cloudscape:
(My alpha maps are not very clean, therefore those weird stripes, please don't mind them, I'm going to clean them up)

Previs (

(1.5 million polys. No fun to render it.)

My to do list:
Animation and rigging:

Guns on the airship

Wings of the Rockettrooper
Background painting
Particle FX:

Bomb drops
AA Gunfire
Airship explosion
Bullet hitting rockettrooper and making him crash
Still a lot to do. I hope I am able to finish this regarding all the other threads at a top notch level of quality. That's really great stuff you people are pulling together. I'm quite intimidated.

That plane render is pretty sweet. What did you render it with? I use mental ray and I can't get my motion blur to come out smooth like that even at highest settings. What settings did you use to get good motion blur?

Karabo, you might want to try cranking up the anti-aliasing really high and increase the shutter duration to like 3. I also had to increase the otion and time samples. That gives me a nice round motion blur.

Sorry I didn't answer the question right away.

The blurred prop is actually just an alpha mapped circular plane. I created the alpha procedurally with some gradients. The colored tips of the blades is a circular gradient in the color channel.

There's no actual motion blur going on. In the animation the textured plane is rotating slowly, giving the impression of a really fast spinning prop.

there is some really good work done here.

Love your texture on the character. the plane designe is good as well, though don't like the colour of your plane as much, i guess i am not a huge fan of bright yellow.
