View Full Version : HMC #22 - Classic Self Portrait - Kaiser Otto IV.

Hello everyone.
Don't know, if thats really a good idea, but it would be cool having an image of myself as an emperor

so i will try to model that guy, and give him may face:
its Otto IV., german emperor

That will be a heavy part of work, i think. But ... nothing ventured, nothing gained :D
so lets try it.

woah I love that painting - very opulent! The cloak in particular, would be so much fun to texture :) Best of luck

thanks ;)

Sooo, i finally got myself to starting on this. I will first make my own head, and if thats finished, i will go on to the rest of the image, so that if i have no time or whatsoever to finish, i will have at least a bust-entry or so.

started with the basic shape of my head, not correct yet, i first modeled from bad reference, until today i took my 140mm tele-lens and made ortho-images, that fit together quite well.
I first want to get the Shape correct in Maya, and will then go on to Mudbox for the Details and such
so thats it until now:

and thats a crop of one of the many reference-images i shot of myself :D

looking a bit more like me already i think:
man, faces are so complex :argh:

good night everyone :D

hi everybody
i think thats it for the basic shape, moving on to mudbox soon

So, what do you think?

Lookin good, lips look a little sharp at the edges and will be easy to smooth out a bit in mudbox. Nice overlapping eyebrows.

Very nice likeness thus far. Lips might be a bit sharp but to me they really look like your lips from the reference you posted. Looking forward to seeing how you handle all the garb. It's qutie a nice regal painting, very nice texture project. Good start.

Thansk guys,

still not sure, what im going to do with my beard, should i add an extra objekt to sculpt, should i sculpt just on the face-mesh, or should i try using paintEffects to create the hairs?

same goes for the eyebrows, but i think i stay with sculpting these.

hm, i think i should change the material to something with smoother highlights :D

Yeah, I've been contemplating the same thing about my beard. Still haven't decided. I will say though that hair in maya is a serious pain to work with. Worth giving it a shot if you have the time cause I feel like it's a good thing to get used to, then again I don't know if one can get used to it. I think I'm just gonna go with sculpting it like you started to do. Both of us have paintings which makes it harder. If I was doing a sculpture I'd just stylize the beard like all real sculptures do. I still may take this approach. Look forward to seeing what you settle on.

thats really... uncool...
sculpting the whole thing gives the look of deformed skin under the hair, because you can see through the thin hairs, yep, but... tried it with PaintFX in Maya... and one has so small control of how the stuff grows and into what direction and in what place how long and so on, thats ok if you have "some-character" that you want to give "some-beard", but not if you have a reference, thats what i think. Maya Fur would be easier to control, but i think thats not legitimate 'modeling',

so i will just go with sculpting, maybe looks a little weird when textured in a close-up, but, its the best way to go, i think.

Beard and Eyebrows will be refined, then i will make a new mesh for my hair, i think

hehe certainly a royal facial expression - it looks so stern I'd be scared to be his subject :)

hehe, i think thats the weird eye-mesh :D, i tried to only make the pupil go inside, because i wanted the cornea bulge for correctly modeling the eyelids, so the dont intersect too much if i am going to create "real eyes" for that.
I changed the eye-mesh now, it doesn't look that fierce anymore.
And i found out that the reference image i posted is a "reamake" of the original painting, but i couldn't find any high-res image of the old painting, only in small size and always only crops
in that image he looks not that dreamy, more majestic, with eyes looking more straight and maybe the slightly gray beard-hair. I will definately go with this original painting style for the eye-orientation ^^ and for the armor, which looks much more natural and hand-crafted on the old picture (of course only if i find enough time, doing some the more sculpting that comes with that)

ok, so not much new here, only made a base mesh for the hair, the cube down there is only reference where aprox the armor / shoulders will be.
and i changed the eye-mesh, as said :D
