View Full Version : Help with cartoon skull sculpt?

I want to sculpt this character as a way to become more familiar with ZBrush. I tried modeling an uber simple base mesh in Maya and exporting it to ZBrush but the outcome was horrible.

Any advice?

Hi, I have a similar character I recently sculpted, well almost I never get around to finishing it, having problems with the topology in the teeth and one finger. I will post it later this afternoon when I get home from work.

Here we go I broke down my process. This is my first post here. I have been lurking since about 05 lol. However, my skills are still developing. Hope what I post helps maybe I can get help cleaning up my top too!

The character is not posed yet and I saved him as a ztool so I can drop him down to the base mesh at any time. I think the mistake I made was smoothing him in Maya. I think I should have brought the boxy mesh into zbrush. Live and learn.

I can see that importing your lowpoly object into zbrush will probably not look right when its subdivided since it makes little sense from a modeling standpoint. You can of course import an object with very few polygons into zbrush and add the details there (in fact, the quite simple 'undefeated swordsman' could probably be built very fast using z-spheres as a starting point), the object you have built has serious issues though.

It has many elongate/ stretched polygons for example. Subdividing those will lead to many many tiny elongate polygons that will not deform well when painted on with a brush. Try to keep the polygons of your model as equal sided as possible.

Unfortunately I do not have the time to model the swordsman for you, but I have attached an image of the swordsman where I have drawn in some lines to guide you what you should build in Maya and then import into zbrush.
