View Full Version : Makin smooth decreases verts?

I found something odd today. As a test I added a meshsmooth modifier in 3ds Max, and the higher I set it, the more verts my model got, as expected (in the game preview).

However, when I set iterations at 0, the model still showed faces that looked smoothed a bit, HOWEVER the total verts decreased from those in the original sharp poly model.

Is this a bug within my game preview engine, or something I missed?

it's either a bug or your viewport changed to the phong shading model.

How are you counting your vertices? Meshsmooth automatically sets the whole model to use one smoothing group, unless you tell it to do otherwise (Parameters rollout). This doesn't change vert count.

Meshsmooth does however give the impression of reducing the polygon count... it converts triangles to quads. Depending on which polygon counter you use, the poly count would seem to decrease, since before MS you may have seen # of tris, but after MS you see # of quads.

Does this make sense?
