View Full Version : Opening Maya 4.0 files in Maya 3?

I was wondering if it is at all possible to open a Maya 4 Binary or Ascii file within Maya 3. If not, is there a way to convert a Maya 4 file to be compatible with Maya 3.0?

This was actually discussed in an earlier thread but i cant find it now. As far as i know you cant go backwards, only forwards, meaning you can open a Maya 3 file in 4 but not viceversa. Try opening the file in a text editor (maybe) and changing the line that says Maya 4 file to Maya 3. I could swear i did that before with a Maya 3 to Maya 2 file. I think....

maybe im wrong :p

try this >
save you scene as *.ma (ascii file) and open it in some text editor. Replace the line " for maya 4 " with maya 3 and open it in maya 3.this way you can exchange geometry and other basic things ...also you should `optimize your scene size` to get rid of all those maya 4 nodes that came along with your scene.

Thanks for the responses guys.. Flo, how exactly do I optimize my scene size? Sorry, I'm quite new to Maya.

`optimize scene size` is a auto-procedure ..
find it here > file>optimize scene size. it automatically removes unused shaders, empty sets etc for you.
use it time by time to get rid of unnecessary (maybe unnoticed) stuff.
