View Full Version : 2 Questions about Zbrush

09 September 2009, 01:28 PM

i am new with Zbrush and i am trying to teach my self how to use it ( i am using some links i found in this forum...)

1st Q : When do you decide to use projection master instead of sculpting directly the model and also what are the advantages of PM

2nd Q : How would you sculpt a piece of shirt like this (check picture).

i am having some trouble to sculpt (one reason may be because my computer can't handle alot of polygons, i am on old 32 bits laptop...)

I am using Zbrush 3.1 and 3dsmax 2010 by the way

projection master is good for putting a complex displacement on to a flatish surface eg a lion's head embossed into a shiled, you can't really see what you're doing so fluidly as when straight painting, but you do have very good tools for fine positioning of decals etc.

when I'm sculpting creases in fabric i find the slash2 brush with a low z intensity gets some great results - take note of the differance between slashing from left to right or vice versa the crease will be upside down (you might want this)
after slashing use the blur brush on the upper side of the crease to blend it into the rest of the fabric

runnig the pinch tool over it will sharpen the creas.

use the stitch brushes for the seams in the cloth, sometimes i sculpt the cloth joints first then paint on the stitching over the seam (with lazy mouse)

or you could mask the area and push it out under the deform tab then sue the smooth brush where needed

Thank you for the answer (like the tips)
Actually i found out that a gnomon dvd (don't remember exactly the name...) explaining how to sculpt clothes and he seems to be using the lazy mouse as you say.

i really appreciate your answer as i am still not confortable with Zbrush... Even if it seems to be the best sculpting software as far as i know (almost as sculpting in real life), it's not rally intuitif or its probably because i am still learning lol.

By the way the lion on your website isvery nice . How long did it take you to sculpt?

the mesh took a couple of days wasting time pushing around polgons and edgeloops in XSI and about half a day to sculpt in Zbrush. the whole job took a month.
getting from Zbrush to XSI was the tricky bit

look at my rock wompa, that took two days
