View Full Version : SRGP and SPHINGS

i have some questions. The first one is like subject says... what about SRGP and SPHINGS... In the book of:

Computer Graphics Principles and practice

talks about these libraries but they are too old ? I search on internet but i only found Linux versions. To a novice it is great to try to learn with these tools or I must use some like TinyPTC, OpenGL etc... ?

And what compiler i must use... VC++? BC++ ? There are a lot of problems when i try to use some libraries... always a lot of errors.... LOL

Well... hoping somebody helps me

lol! Exact same prob I have = Good thing I also bought another book that uses openGL. But I thought the language was PHIGS?

Would really appreciate it if anyone could help us out :p

The book talks about SPHIGS like an simplified dialect of the 3D graphics standard PHIGS. BTW.... Im totaly new in graphic programming and i must to learn ALL.

Do u have experience with any othe libraries ? i wanna learn!

PHIGS / PHIGS+ are the precursors to OpenGL. You can translate across pretty easily. I would recommend getting the OpenGL programming guide

OpenGL Programming Guide (

if you want to learn more about OpenGL. I think it goes over some things like NURBS and basic lighting stuff too.

CGPP (Foley and Van Damm et al) covers pretty much everything you'd want to know, but it can complicate things quite a lot. For more specific stuff there are usually better books. eg. Andrew Glassners Introduction to Raytracing which is very good.

If you have Miscrosoft VC++ then do use it as it one of the best, but any should do. If on Windows you can install cygwin from and get unix tools including the GCC compiler, although you do have to dive into the command line.

Man, its been ALONG time since I have heard anything about PHIGS. I agree I would dive straight into OpenGL without delay. There are some great sites to get you up and running in no time but I would most definently go to the HeNe's site a cruise around. It will help you get up and playing real fast.
