I am trying to model a face using the knife tool and smooth shift. Can somebody please explain a way to model a face?

I'm assuming you're using lightwave...

The knife tool and smooth shift are useful, but you'll need to use other tools as well.

Learn to use the drag tool (ctrl+t), especially in the perspective view. Learn about welding points (ctrl+w), and creating polygons (p). I also use triangulate (shift+t), and merge polygons (shift+z) a lot.

Mostly you just have to keep practicing and develop your own techniques and style.
