View Full Version : Texturing and shading a candle using misss shader

I took this model from Jeremy Birn's lighting challenges and was trying to light it up. I am not convinced with how the candles are rendered and it is wip. if some one can give me guidelines and help me with this, it will really help alot.

They don't seem to be doing any SSS, look at candle reference photos (or better still light one up) and the first thing you notice is that the SSS light causes the top of the candle to glow with a rapid falloff.

I don't have any tutorials on candles, but in my SSS workflow, the very first thing I set up is the scatter radius for each layer, which is going to be dependent on your scene scale. With a single point light representing the flame, I'd start with the back scatter and turn the weight to 1. Then adjust the radius until the effect is as "deep" as I'd like. Then, use that number as a starting point to adjust my front scatter. Specular would be the last thing and layered on top.
