I thought I'd leave a little more info here on how those shots were made.
rigging, animation: Softimage XSI
effects: Softimage XSI - ICE
modeling (by DDS): 3dsmax

The black trail wasn't rendered at all, instead the particles were directly captured from the viewport using constant shading, which takes less than 1 minute for the whole shot.
Below you can see the trail effect before any compositing effects are applied.

Rendering-wise it looks cool. I also like the modeling style :D but the animation could use a lot of work. Right now there's no anticipation, and his pose isn't dynamic enough. Try arching his back more and adding some bounce to his landing. Good start man, keep it up!
