View Full Version : August: Mini Challenge

08-01-2009, 07:31 PM
Sorry for the delay everyone, Here (http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eschach/dgresh/lambs/oldfrnd.wav) is the Audio file for August's Challenge.

I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner. Bye..

The original source is Here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102926/)

Download the file by right-clicking on the link, and select "save link as..." in the drop-down list.

Use your time wisely everyone. We have a whole month ahead of us, so start planning your setup. I hope to see something soon from everyone.

For anyone who doesnt know of a site to host their WIPS I suggest trying Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/) or Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/). They are both very reliable video hosting websites and most people have access to them.

The Rules Are:

Make all the WIPS in Playblast form, then if you choose you can create your final piece in a more robust renderer (NOT necessary, you can still post the final with a playblast).
All participants must show there work-in-progress before posting the final.
There are no time constraints when it comes to the Audio just try not to let yourself go to far with what you put in before or after the audio file.
DO NOT add any other audio other then what is provided.
HAVE FUN!!! :buttrock:
If you still want to try the Non-Audio topic here is the link.

Just to clarify, as this will be my first time entering, the character has to mention those words (in the audio file), at the same time as carrying something up a flight of stairs or incline? :)

08-10-2009, 02:21 AM
Below is a link to an animatic pass of what I plan to animate in 3D using the provided audio. There will be more progress and updates posted as I work along. Keep in mind that I am new to the animation work flow therefor I am open to all cc you may have. I'm just trying to get a hang of the whole process so I can actually get better :D

i didnt understand too, we will have 2 different animations?

08-10-2009, 01:46 PM
Sorry everybody I didn't mean to confuse anyone but yes there is two different catagories this month: one is a pantomime and the other is the audio clip. I hope that helps clarify everything up.

08-12-2009, 01:14 AM
this could be the audio thead because thatonejondude already started and we can create other one for the pantomine

im ok with just the audio challenge for this month, i think its a more complete study

splinter, one correction, the audio says "...old friend for tonight..."

08-12-2009, 01:41 AM
splinter, one correction, the audio says "...old friend for tonight..."

Listen a little closer he does say dinner. I know it sounds a little bit muffled, but if you replay it a couple of times you will notice that he says "... I'm having an old friend for dinner." Plus I saw the script and wrote it from there, that way I would also have the correct punctuation. Thank you for the help all the same.

As for the change in threads I am okay with letting this thread be where the audio challenge takes place and then I can create another for the pantomime. Earlier today I have tried to get support from other forum leaders on some of the clean up around here. So keep your eyes open for a few changes that may occur.

Thank you all and lets have some fun this month.

08-12-2009, 02:10 AM

You are right about the audio transcription:

"I do wish we could chat longer, but... I'm having an old friend for dinner. Bye..."

Think is a good idea to put the main source: here is the source for the Agust 09 challenge, if you dont mind :D :

>>AFS Agust 09 audio challenge SOURCE<< (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102926/)

08-12-2009, 02:44 AM
its so clear the word dinner? my girlfriend says dinner too but i still listen "tonight"

i searched the wavsource and there is dinner too

ok i think you 3 are right =], sorry

08-12-2009, 04:00 AM
i searched youtube for this sentence to see his mouth moving but in this particular word the lecter is not in the scene...

in the subtitles says dinner, every search that i made has dinner and im now convinced...

sorry again

Think is a good idea to put the main source: here is the source for the Agust 09 challenge, if you dont mind :D

That sounds good to me I will try to edit the first post and move this up there thank you.

sorry again

Thanks for your help and don't hesitate to call me out on any mistakes, I won't hold this one against you.http://www.thescubasite.com/smile/happy/happy0009.gif JK

Hi guys!

Here's my first layout:

08-13-2009, 05:55 PM
@ thatonejondude - Really interesting approach. If I understood, is a some sort of TV show host, on the way of the "tales from the crypt". Think that can be a very nice animation :D Waiting for more updates! Cheers!!

@ Brov - looking nice! Looking forward for more updates! Cheers!!

08-13-2009, 06:04 PM
Ok, this is the thumbnails for my first idea for the concept :D :

And a concept sketch for the characters:

08-13-2009, 06:12 PM
@thatonejondude - i liked the ideia, i think if you make a bigger contrast of the facil expression will be better, i was think in the beggining a normal face , a little arrogand perhaps and he changes during the "im having an ond friend for dinner" and finish with that evil face that you made

@brov - what will be your story?

@ferx - are you joing us this month? will be great if you join, i looked your blog and you have some good works
you tried the dominance war main challenge too?

mine animation is still in the storyboard but im think in a man cooking and talking in the fone, the fone will be hanged with the sholders and he is cutting a carrot. he puts the sliced carrots in a bowl and in the final frase he stab the knife in the table and turn to a picture of he and his dog playing togheter

08-13-2009, 06:20 PM
@ferx ok you posted when i was writing =] its nice that you join us

will it be in 2d?
i liked the emphasis in the "longer"
about the fly, because we are not allowed to edit the sound and without the bzzzz i don't know if it could be better that the fly is just walking in any flower or something

you are trying the 11secclub this month? i saw that you made an animation for the last month.
please if you can, give me any help =]

08-13-2009, 08:25 PM
Vidotto - Thanks for your words :D Yes, Im going for 2D. For the fly, you are right, think I could move the camera a bit when the frog turns the head to the fly, and we can see it in a flower or a leaf. Thanks for point that :)

You are crazy!, two challenges in a month??? !! :D Ok , let me see your wip for 11 second club, and later, I post my comments there.

08-13-2009, 09:19 PM
almost all universitys here in brazil postoned the classes because the flu and im with more time this month. im with easy freelances this months too

but i dont know if i can finish the 11secondclub, im a little scared =], first time...

08-17-2009, 02:09 PM
hey all, heres my first blocking for this month challenge:

trying to keep it simple since i am also doing the 11 seconds club animation

08-19-2009, 03:51 AM
@ Mike

Nice blocking pass :D The hat puts a mysterious note on the concept, cool touch :D Hope you have time to finish it :)

08-19-2009, 04:01 AM
I'm working a bit slow in this concept :curious:

Here is a test for the key poses for the main character. Im still working on thumbnails, and this is more an animatic test. I need to work in the second character poses too.

FERX main character poses test01 (http://www.misraices.com.mx/videos/test_video.htm)

08-21-2009, 06:40 PM
MikeCR: Nice blocking, I really like your start

Ferx: good idea

I hope you will finish your animation.:)

08-22-2009, 12:48 PM

08-22-2009, 07:38 PM
Im waiting your animation Brov - i know it is going to be nice...

08-23-2009, 06:08 AM
Ok I know it may be a little late to get in on this, but I'm going to throw my hat in anyway. We'll see if I can get it cleaned up.

Blocking with some breakdowns.

08-23-2009, 08:23 PM
Hi everyone,

I am really enjoying watching everyone's entries this far. Keep up the good work! :buttrock: This month is more then halfway through, and it is now time to think about next month. I have started the new "Topics Discussion" thread and would like to welcome everyone to take a look and make some suggestions for next month's Non-Audio Topic.

Thank you.

September: Topic Discussion (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=6062504#post6062504)

Alrighty... its Aug 27th.... i still have to pack and move on the first..... and... I'm a little hungOver from going to a show on the last NiN tour :), but I have tomorrow off work, and I've decided to attempt to rock a submission in the next 24 hours.
The audio kicks ass so im going to try. If yall see process posts all in one day I started here... Anyone else wanna boost the numbers on the entrys of this accept the speed animation challenge.

08-27-2009, 05:04 AM
My workload instantly got way out of hand, I'm going to finish this just not on the clock I originally set for it. Its sad, I really liked this dialog.

08-27-2009, 06:15 AM
Hi Guys!

I was working very hard in the last week on my animation. I will upload the final version tomorrow (aug 28th).:arteest:

08-27-2009, 10:47 AM

here is the Rough layout pass. Took longer than I would have hoped, and my models IK arms broke somewhere between maya7 and Maya2009.... Vimeo sux also and wants me to wait 45min to upload it so thats what it may be doing if this link doesnt work right away.

I'm going to sleep for a few hours, and then meet my new roommates while signing my new lease, and hopefully I'll have this sucker cleaned linear by dinner. If I can just get to the point where I can start the sync I'll be happy for 24 hours..

Finish that sucker NICK... you had something good in the works. :)

08-27-2009, 04:06 PM
Hey OeMq!

I'm waiting for your upload...;)

08-27-2009, 05:51 PM
Thanks Brov... Keep me on my toes...
alright im clocking back in... hope to have an update with nice animation blocking in a few hours...

08-28-2009, 01:24 AM

ps. vimeo is looking like its going to take forever. If this link doesn't work right away check back in an hour or so if you like..

Here is the first animation pass.... I think it tells the story, but needs much, much polish. I still have like 3 hours untill I hit the 24 mark....... getting tired, but lets see if we can get this to a better place.

All praises to Matt Kummer--- thanks for letting me borrow your models...

08-28-2009, 04:41 AM
Hello Hello,
It has been 24 hours, and I am posting the last update for tonight.
Sync and really all facial is in the werx.
The end needs to be finished....

I put a timeCode on the sucker (which everyone who wants crit should prolly do) so that you guys can communicate on problem areas easily.

All Praise to Matt Kummer- for lending me his models...

08-28-2009, 06:05 AM
I put a timeCode on the sucker (which everyone who wants crit should prolly do) so that you guys can communicate on problem areas easily.

I agree with you 100% it really does help. There is so much more that can be communicated this way.

On a side note, I really like your animation. I think that it might help some after sucking on her neck the character is taking his deep breathes, here you might want to hunch his back over a little more when he exhales. That might help with making him look like he put a lot of effort into it. Then at around the point when he kiss her and looks away try having his eyes slow out of the focus on her, then out into the direction of his new objective.

Great work!!!

08-28-2009, 07:09 AM
The first pencil test of the animation :D Hope I have time to finish it.
Im need to work on the second character....

>>>>>> Pencil Test V.01 (http://www.speedee.com.mx/video/pencil_test01.htm)

08-28-2009, 04:48 PM
Ferx - It's nice to see some 2-d work make it's way into the challenge. Your animation is looking really good so far. I can't wait to see the finished product.

08-28-2009, 07:29 PM

Here's my final version: Link (http://www.vimeo.com/6317861)

I hope you like it.:wavey:

08-28-2009, 07:43 PM
Hey Brov! I like it a lot! You really used both meanings of the monologue well! Congrats and happy birthday! ;)

08-28-2009, 08:55 PM
Thanks for the crit Splinter. I've been showing it around the office and peeps have been making very similar comments. I usually try to get every change I can in, but with this time constraint, and the fact that I'm moving this weekend.... It may not be possible.
I'll solve the sync problems first and then I'll fix as many comments as time allows.

Wooooo look at you shine Brov... Nice work... Making folks have to step it up... :)

08-28-2009, 09:29 PM
Congratulation Brov!
Very nice work! - Dracula very crazy! :applause:

08-28-2009, 10:39 PM
Brov - That was AWESOME!!! I really enjoyed the creativity. Good luck with the voting at the end of the month.

08-29-2009, 02:23 AM
nice one brov, congrats

08-29-2009, 04:42 AM
@ Sean - Really nice idea , i like a lot :D. Maybe the segment of the breaths are a bit large, perhaps two breaths are enough. At the end when he throw his victim :D (frame 400 and next) maybe you can open a little the scene to look the body falling, only a comment :) Cool work

@John - thanks :D Hope I can finish on time, and talking about that, when is the deadline for the final submission?

@ Brov - Cool animation!! like a lot the concept, very well achived. Cheers!!

08-29-2009, 09:09 AM
Howdy Yall
I got home late but was still able to put around 4 more hours into it.

Polished a little throughout, but The end is still the same. I think that it's cleaner, but still want it to go further. Any more ideas?

Just saw your comments Ferx, and thanks. I was actually thinking about taking one of the breaths out. I'll try it out.
Probably going to go with the ending eyes splinter suggested, in combination with making it look more like he actually just dropped off a heavy load...

Moving tomorrow or today considering it's 5 am in NY HA :(
prolly unpacking sunday...
I'll get another update this weekend if I can.
Yall see something that needs to change call it out.

All thanks to Matt Kummer for the use of his Models....

08-29-2009, 02:12 PM
Wow Brov!

Totally awsome!
Very good job! :)

Sooo makes me want to give it a go but I just dont have time right now.

08-29-2009, 10:47 PM
@John - thanks :D Hope I can finish on time, and talking about that, when is the deadline for the final submission?

The deadline is at midnight between the 30th and the 1st of September. That is GMT -7 time.

Good luck everyone!!!

HERE (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=801111) is the poll for the month of September's Non-Audio topic.

08-29-2009, 11:59 PM
Working now on the second character :) Think I need the whole weekend to finish the animation :D

Here it is the pencil test with the second character frames:

>>> Toad and Frog pencil test V.02 (http://www.speedee.com.mx/video/pencil_test03.htm)

08-30-2009, 04:54 AM
I was looking at the way that the past challenges have been setup for voting, and I was thinking that you should probably submit the poll for the challenges to the finished animation forum, where you will get more exposure while getting a completely impartial voting system.

The addition of the extra votes will add both exposure to everyone who participates, but to the contest itself as well. This will bring in more participants, more votes, and also possibly raise the awareness of this existing here.

It would be great to see this get as popular as the 11 second club. And posting this in that forum will also give you the chance to show your hard work, and get more thorough critique.

08-30-2009, 10:42 AM
Thanks everyone. It's been fun, but I'm out of time.

Here is the link to my final submission.

Thank You MAtt Kummer for letting me use your models.

08-30-2009, 01:11 PM
hey all, here is my final version for this month

there still work to be done though :-)

08-31-2009, 06:31 PM
I am really sorry everyone I posted the voting thread a day early. So please don't pay that one any attention. There is still some time left if you need to make a late submission. I will make sure that the voting period for the new poll is long enough for everyone who has already voted will see what mistake was made and can place their vote once again.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

09-01-2009, 06:11 AM
Please use THIS (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=801955) thread to place a vote for your favorite animation for the month of August.

AUGUST POLL (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=801955)

09-09-2009, 02:49 PM
Howdy Ya'll.
Thanks to everyone who voted for me. I must admit that I'm surprised to win considering the animation I was up against. Mike and Brov rocked house, and I really expected Brov to take this one based on level of polish.
-I voted for myself, but I wanted to vote for you Brov :)

Thanks everybody... I'll see you guys in this month's competition.

ps.I think that nick had a good idea a few posts back when he said that it might be a good idea to post the judging on the finished animation thread because this thing could blow up given more publicity.
Probably a question for management. Splinter what do you think?

09-09-2009, 02:56 PM
pss.... I cleaned the piece up a little last night..

09-10-2009, 04:07 PM
I think that could be a good idea. I wanna see what kind of recognition we can get from just being on the front page banner. Afterwords we could see what we could do about having a place in the finished animation thread. I will have to talk to someone about possibly getting a sticky thread there or something. I will keep everyone updated with what ever comes up.

See you all later...
