View Full Version : Why so serious?

I'm creating a rig I'd like to release over on highend so I started testing it out. I'm having a lot of fun just creating this shot so I think I'll texture and light it all the way through. What do you guys think?

Wow there was true emotion in that. I really felt like he was talking to me.... I didn't feel comfortable lol Especially when he got closer to the camera.

Now this is some serious stuff :D watched it many many time end enjoyed it ALOT. Great work mate  although it could use just a little bit more exaggeration, imho.

what software do you use? maya?

Yes it is rigged in Maya. The shapes were sculpted in Mudbox. Here is my initial lighting and shading test. I think hair would add a lot to him.

Here's an initial render pass:

Still need to adjust some of the textures and shaders. I would like to add hair also.

I had a hard time trying to stop watching that. Very well done.

Great work! Really well done.

Very, very cool. I'm really impressed. However, I agree with Tri-State; exaggerating some more movements, especially the eyebrows, would add a whole new layer of cool.

it looks great but, but the lips sync feels like you need to tighten up on the posing, on the, the" NOT ONE BIT" line could use some more anger or emphasis, on the first "why so serious" you can push the emotion a tad more to build it up more or don't move the head around so much. Overall the lip syinc just feels a tad off not totally just not hitting where it should.

jus food for thuoght

Are you planning on doing body animation for this as well?

08-04-2009, 08:50 PM
Hi there, some nice stuff. But I have to agree with mr Hive. Your lip sync needs to be a bit tighter. It's floating a tad too much right now.
I guess this is a personal opinion, but the major moves you did with the mouth at 13 seconds feels more like, look at my shapes, rather than adding to the acting.

Then again I am nitpicking, you have some good stuff there. I just added my thoughts to help you push it even further.

Thanks for all the comments! I'm a rigger more than anything else so I'm trying to branch out here. I'll try to incorporate your suggestions and really tighten up the animation.

The video reference for "Not one bit" has him with sort of an emotionless expression, but I guess it would improve it if I exaggerated and really pushed it more.

I do plan on displaying the body animation. When he does that sniffle at 13 seconds, I was going to have him wipe his nose with the back of his hand. I guess that means I'll either need to give him clothes or texture him naked :)

Thanks again.

Did another pass of animation and updated a few of the shapes. Stuck his body in there, but it's not really animated much yet.

Also played with the lighting some more. I think I like the single light source look.

excellent work. Very expressive.

Chad man, that was amazing! I had no idea you could animate so well :D Great job dude. I agree with the rest about the mouth. You're doing some crazy subtle stuff in there, but the main syncing needs a little work. Keep it up!
