Hey there,

Creating a whole landscape and population of Borderlands was a keen job by any stretch of the imagination. To rebuild it in a whole new style was something else again. Gearbox Art Director of Borderlands, Brian Martel, took time out to give us a deep look into the development of this enormous endeavor. Click the image.

Cool article. I have been looking forward to this game since I saw the trailer awhile back. I really like the style they are shooting for.

Sweet this game looks awesome. I'm glad they mentioned the outsource house i work at, it was a blast to work with gearbox. Everybody buy their game:applause:

It's not my favourite style either, but... yeah, um... that doesn't make much sense. You do realise not all games from now on will use this style, right? :curious: How is this going to set back game graphics by ten years or more?

I couldnt disagree more. Cutting edge techniques were still used to create these assets. Not to mention that it expands the artistic aspect of gaming into a broader range visually. Same as having a live action movie, anime, cartoon, cg, or something very stylized such as 300. Not everything has to look like COD4. For someone on an art forum that was a very close minded comment.

Art style: bad decision.This image (http://features.cgsociety.org/stories/2009_07/borderlands/im13.jpg) looks rather lame. i mean, where's the cutting edge there where the arms is bending like 10 years ago ? Overall I am no fan of cleshading with soft gradients.Red Steel 2 looks better and more consistent, IMO.

What I know is that I like this cell shading style and by what I saw from the trailer it looks really cool. :D
