Hi All

I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish this challenge because of time, but I will sure try.

Modeling and texturing is really not my thing, so I'm hoping my buddy will help me out with that, and one of the keywords in this is realisme, which again is not my thing.

Anyways, this is an effects and animation challenge, so I hope I'll be just fine :)

This is my first concept of the vehicles, its a simple look, and it's cartoonic, but who cares, it has flaming boosters for speed, homing missiles for weapons, and chopper rotarblades for flying. What's not to like :)

Well, can't see the missiles yet, but they're there trust me :)

I don't really like all those wipeout/podracing hovering vehicles. And they won't be using them in 50 years anyways, so my design is on wheels, a combination of a WWbeetle and a sand boogie. The rotarblades are not really for flying, but more to steer in the air after a big jump. Something like that :)

Hey Ronnie.

Will sure look forward to your thread here! Can't wait to see what you are going to cook up!

Good luck!

07-20-2009, 06:51 PM
Hey Darknon

That's a funny concept. I love the idea of helicopter rotor blades on a high speed race car.

looking forward for more :)

07-20-2009, 09:07 PM
Thanks boys.

Here's the first test animation on this project. I thought it would be very important to test if I could do vehicle animation at all. And it's a way to fast get an idea of how it all will look, instead of just building stuff and hope it all fits together in the end. That's the way I like to work anyways.

Again, this is a test. The model is not finished, and the rotorblades and missiles should not be out (it's hidden when not used). There's some boxes and jumps on the track, I'll explain that later on :)

Nice animation test - you are almost done now :) - except you have forgot to make the "Planet Terror" scene wit the rotor blades ;)

07-20-2009, 09:25 PM
I do like the rotorblade scene from 28 weeks later alot better than planet terror :)

07-22-2009, 01:03 PM
Time for an update.

I got my good friend PoPpiN onboard for the vehicle modeling, and rigging part, which is awesome.

He has taken my design, and started modeling and rigging the wheels :)

07-22-2009, 01:22 PM
pretty impressive! I am really looking forward for some more updates :)

07-22-2009, 10:02 PM
Here's a test of a car fireing missiles to eliminate one of the opponents. This is one of the scenes that will be in the movie, if all turnes out well. As I'm doing animations while my teammate are doing modeling, I hope we don't run into problems, when transfering his models to my animations.

Anyways, here's a preview of the missile attack scene.

Looking good guys  This could be a winner.

07-25-2009, 01:47 PM
Haha awesome setup - the visuals combined with the animation previews is pure epic :D

Great work bandidos...

07-25-2009, 03:41 PM
Thanks Guys

Modelling of the cars almost complete

Well. I've been working on the racing track and stadium lately. Which is a pain in the neck for me, as I hate modeling and texturing. I have though about making a track with loops and twists and so on, like wipeout and f-zero. But again, it would be a strugle for me to do. So I'll stick with a straigh forward track like this one for now, then I can focus more on the vehicle action :)

Unfortunatly, I'm going traveling this august, and visiting family and shit, so I really only have about 10-11 days to work on this, which is alot less than I was hoping for. Anyways, I'll work like crazy those days to finish this. And PoPpiN has made some awesome vehicles that takes alot of time to render. This two-car-image took 16minuts to render, on a low quality render setting, and low turbosmooth. And my idea was to have 6 cars on track, and explosions and debris and smoke and motion blur and.. and... and...

So... That will be a challenge :)

Anyways, here's what the racing track with cars looks like now. And sorry for the image size, but I can't upload bigger images at

07-26-2009, 02:32 PM
Well. I had to try and make a more crazy race track :)

07-26-2009, 02:55 PM
That's very cool. Looks like it will turn out nicely.

I like the little rockets on the sides.

07-26-2009, 10:13 PM
Sweet!! the car man, really nice. keep those updates comin!

07-27-2009, 07:29 PM
This challenge has made me play Wipeout HD, what a great game :)

07-27-2009, 07:35 PM
Wow man excellent animation on that car!! Very cool looking, it will be neat to see the animation all together!

this is really impressive - looking forward to seeing more. makes me want to join in on this FXwar - or make a crash - really good choreography too, all the shots and camera moves work really well.

08-02-2009, 01:45 PM
I've been keeping an eye on this thread. Awesome work. Any updates?

08-02-2009, 02:09 PM
well. Just got home from a vacation today. I'll try to work hard the next few days to bring something cool to the table :)

08-04-2009, 05:57 PM
Time for a minor update.

Well. This is really the first vehicle animation and render test. This short piece of animation and render took alot longer than I was hoping for. the render took 15hours at low quality and with motionblur. So I'm really getting pushed by time.

As for the animation it self, inspired by all the cool stuff that michael bay does. This shot will properbly end up in the final movie, I might put another car in there also. The car might bounce a little too much, But I want action and movement, so...

08-04-2009, 06:03 PM
Have you tried doing the motion blur in AfterEffects?

08-04-2009, 06:24 PM
Yeah i think you should do it with Realsmart MB or use rpf with velocity channel as your output and do it in a software wich can handle rpf.

08-04-2009, 07:04 PM
Well. I do like the motionblur in vray, when the quality is up. I dont like the motionblur that rpf files can give me. And post motionblur is out of the question since I have really fast wheel and rotor rotations. So I think that render with motionblur is the best solution. And I can get away with low quality I think :)

08-04-2009, 11:41 PM
Yea that's a very nice update, I actually really like the bouncyness of the car.

Damn good point about the rotational motion blur issue on the wheels, we were gonna do motion blur in post and walk straight into that problem. Thanks for the heads up man, we owe you one :)

Looking forward to seeing your progress

08-05-2009, 01:21 AM
Looks dope! I like the bounciness but i think it might fit better if you have some obstructions or stones or something in the roadway like in your previz. I think it looks too bouncy cause it's being all eratic on a clear road. Quality rocks!

08-06-2009, 02:37 PM
RayRay: The idea was to let the drivers activate power-ups, like missiles, boosters, and hazzards on the road. But building the track has been a bitch for me, so I desided just to do it simple. but I really need some movements in the cars, can't have them going all straight now can I :)

They should struggle for control after a corner, but I'll make them go more straight on the straight parts of the track.

Lord McGoat: Well, glad to help.. It does seem like I'll be doing this without motionblur at all. My fumefx wont render in vray with motionblur on. And I really don't want this do turn in to some technical challenge, so I'll just let the motionblur go.

I'm going on vacation again this 15th august, and I won't be home till after the 24th, so I have about 4 days left in all to finish this, and that totally sucks. I wont have the time to do this properbly :(

Anyways, it's a fun challenge, so I'll just see how far I can get with it.

Here's an update. It's a car getting the missiles ready for fire :) ... Without motionblur.

Screenshot from animation

08-06-2009, 02:52 PM
man thats looking dope! I was so disappointed when the clip finished and the missiles hadn't been fired.

08-06-2009, 03:32 PM
It will fire don't worry :) ... Just not right now :)

08-06-2009, 03:42 PM
word up - i do like the bouncy. once missiles are shootin off and stuff i think will make more sense too. Could u render out your tires on a separate pass with just them and motion blur, then spit out ur other pass with some vectors for rsmb? My track kicked my ass as well :) yours look really nice!

08-06-2009, 03:51 PM
Yeah, I suppose I could render the tires out for them selves, or even just the fumefx stuff. but again, to keep it simple, I will just have it all in one scene, and render once and it's done. I really don't want to split the scene up in more renders. so, I'll have to live without motionblur, even though it makes no sense when rendering moving cars :) Again, it's all because of time, and rendering without motionblur also saves me time in the end.

08-06-2009, 03:55 PM
I totally agree.

We want time... We want time... We want time...

I know he is looking :)

08-06-2009, 03:57 PM
let's just start hounding mr. ortiz for an extension :) having too much fun with this one.

08-06-2009, 04:05 PM
Looks cool.

Am I the only one who sees black for the last second of the video in YouTube? This is the second post by Darknon that had black at the end. At first I thought he was uploading incomplete video to YouTube. Now I wonder if something strange is going on.

08-06-2009, 04:15 PM
I did the black on purpose. Since youtube is using the last sec or something to fade in a menu at the end of the clip. I just made it black for too long I think...

It's just, when I'm only showing a 3 sec clip, I don't want youtube to cut the end off...

So, the black is my fault :)

08-06-2009, 11:48 PM
Time for another update.

The render is not done yet, so you'll have to do with a preview. And then I wont be here again till monday, but please do comment still :)

The idea behind this scene is, Red car activates boosters, to get a high jump. Then in midair activates the rotorblades, and takes a shortcut through the turn, to catch up to the Green car. Then Red car deactivates booster and rotors, to drop untop of the Green car, causes it to spin out.

What will be in render is, booster effect, and a small explosion, and dust and debris when the cars collide, that's the plan at least. This could really be the only scene I can complete on time, and if I'm lucky, I will try to go for the missile attack scene also... But the I really have to be lucky :)

Enough talk. Take a look

Looking great. I'm no animator, so my piece is much simpler animation wise.

08-14-2009, 07:07 AM
this is looking awesome. Havnt seen any other entries but if they're all like this, its an awesome competition! When is this supposed to be done? Looking at what models and test animations ive seen so far the end result is going to be awesome!

08-19-2009, 01:21 PM
fuhshizzle: Thanks. Yeah well, the problem with my movie is that it really is too simple. Not animation wise, but environment and render and effects wise. that could be my fall.

mnoire: I hope the result will be awesome too :)

I thought I would give a status report.

Let me start by saying that I have already learned alot from this. Or from my mistakes really. I had alot of cool ideas that I wanted in this project, so I just started animating those scenes. It turns out that I made this project way too big. Instead of having one or maybe two well done scenes, like other entrys in here, I started to animate a whole race. And that is drowning me now.

I have some scenes that could be considered done, but it turns out that I can't just put them together, cause it makes no sense when put together, a simple story like which car is chasing what is getting lost because I've just animated random action. Which means I have to spend time making inbetween scenes to make some sense out of it.

The rendering time has been killing me because of complex lighting, that ment rendering in a 720x405 resolution, and that just made me depressed.
So I did a new lighting setup, and is rendering it all again. But now it can be done in 720p, which makes me very happy :)

Status right now is that I'm rendering, and putting it all together, and making new scenes where it fits in the "story". And I'm not sure how I will present this. I'm thinking of making it like a trailer for a game or movie or something. If all fails I will just cut the scenes together and that's it.

bottomline is, I have made this a too big project compared to the time given, and that could be the doom of me :D

08-19-2009, 02:30 PM
man your stuff is awesome..
love the previz so far and looking forward to see the blue car sweeping the red car off the track!
in my opinion there's no need for a big story nor a special way of presenting...

"Render a realistic animation sequence of a Next Generation Race" :wise:

i mean i understand your intention but i'd just like to see the speed and some cars spinning through the air :buttrock::applause:

I totally agree. Worst case scenario is you have an animation of several awesome sequenses :D.

08-19-2009, 02:52 PM
Hehe... Thanks for the peptalk guys ;)

I'm on it

08-19-2009, 05:39 PM
If its any consolation, I've had to render mine at 720x405 as well, and it bummed me out, but its better to get it out the door.

08-20-2009, 08:00 PM

While this thing is rendering, I might as well show you my last preview, sinse it's been a while since I have showed you anything.. Mostly because there's nothing to show :)

Anyways, this one is new. youtube made it very dark, sorry.

sweet! FINISH IT!

08-21-2009, 05:28 AM
That's awesome!

08-21-2009, 11:39 AM
Well, the whole video is now cut together, and I do like how it all has turned out, if you don't count the time needed to get the effects right and all that. It's all cut together like a action movie trailer.

And if I'm lucky my sound friend Nicholai will take a few hours of today, to make some sound to this.
If that's the case then we will be 3 people who has worked on this, hence a 3 man team, can I do that? I mean, within the rules of the challenge?

Anyways, this is SO close to finish now, that I really don't want to show anything right now. I will upload the final movie tonight. Can't just spoil it all right now right :)

And I'm not quite sure about what to do with the final movie, where to post it. I suppose that I'll post it in this thread, with info about the team, title of movie and the work and so on. So I'll do that if I don't hear anything else.

08-21-2009, 03:31 PM
post yor entry here

FXWARS NEO RACE: Post your final Entry! (

just saw your entry. looks pretty stellar. I'm going to try damn hard to finish mine up tonight when I get home. Itll be several hours of compositing and adjusting the editing though.

08-21-2009, 07:48 PM
I have posted my entry here:

Here's a direct link to the final animation:

And here's a screensthot from the animation:

It has been a great challenge for me, even though many of us didn't have alot of time to put into this. I have worked on this for about 14 days or something I think. I'm on vacation so I had to do alot of other stuff like travel and visit the family and so on :)

I found that my biggest problem on this challenge was that I planned on doing an entire race with 6 cars. And I also started with this in mind, only to find out that I didn't have all that time I thought I had. So I spend no time on environments and stadium, I made a few boxes and cylindres. I spend some time on some of the explosions, and other explosions I only spend 20minuts on. Same with vehicle animations, the last ones I did was done really fast, and not as much movement as earlier scenes, where I thought I had good time :)

I had an advanced ligthing setup early in the project, but in the end rendertimes where killing me, so I had to do a simple ligthing setup. It made rendertimes much faster, but lacked shadow, so I also rendered a ambient occlution pass on all scenes, so there was alot of rendering to do.

Hope that gave you a little insight of my process :)

Good luck to all in this challenge, see you on the tracks :)

08-21-2009, 08:32 PM
Nicely done with the time you had. :)

Would be great with more details on the environment and a bit time spent adding foreground particles/dust to enhance the sense of speed from the camera POV. But again, there's only this much time in the world (and the deadline). ;)

Best of luck in the competition!
