Latest Update: Finished Video: Trailer v2 (

07-16-2009, 04:00 PM
I know I'm jumping on this rather late, I might not finish in time but would like to take a crack at it anyway and finish it regardless of how long it takes.

This is my basic concept so far. It will be live action with CGI used to enhance the world with environments, muzzle flashes, gadgets ect...

Near future - For now lets say 2041

World has gone to pieces. Numerous large scale "terrorist attacks" from inside the US have given the powers that be an excuse to gain almost unlimited power over the people.

An agent called the "Badger" has been in hiding for years after becoming disillusioned with the system. Now the Agency wants him dead. After getting some information on where he might be they send out a young agent, naive about the true dealings of his superiors to verify his location and take him out. But everything is not as it appears. The young agent must discover where his allegiance truly lies.

Very rough storyboards of the beginning of the 3rd sequence of my trailer. Not going into exact shots as much as a general idea with this first pass. I'm going to try to shoot the entire first three sequences even though there will not be enough time to fit it all in with the time limit. I'll just focus on perfecting whats need for the 90 second spot hoping I can finish before the deadline.

Haven't really had time to get on the computer but did this sketch for a hatchback from the future while on a plane.

Yeah something didn't work right, can't figure out how to upload a video...
here's a link instead.

Rough edit of last 30 seconds with a little vfx.

no video....

08-10-2009, 06:32 PM
Yeah I was having trouble with the cgtalk uploader thing. So I just linked it.

08-10-2009, 07:24 PM
cool a lot of effort form many people.. Looks like you had a lot of fun filming that :)

08-16-2009, 09:24 AM (

Will probably leave as is for now and finish up once the shot/shots are set up. Based it on the X-47B but switched things around a bit.

08-17-2009, 01:46 AM (

Frames of before and after of sniper comp.

That unmanned bomber shot looks great. Alot of work in the live shooting as well. Good job mate. Looking forward to see more.

08-17-2009, 07:57 AM
Thanks, lot of shots to do, and still trying to figure out the edit and shoot some shots. Hope I can get something I'm happy with before deadline.

Software: Shake

WIP car interior composite. Still need to add computer interface and fix roto/key...Video quality is kinda bad but it'll have to work.

oh yeah :) this is looking great! perfect job

08-30-2009, 08:30 PM
Thanks Staszek. I have a much more difficult bomber shot I'm working on now, hope I call pull that one off the way I want. Running out of time!!

08-30-2009, 08:39 PM
Sweet! Cool bomber.

Some of the cuts in your live action clip seemed really abrupt (even for a trailer). Is that just roughed in still? Maybe some dims to/from black like you see in a lot of trailers these days... at least depending on the music that's going over this.

Look forward to seeing more!

08-30-2009, 09:13 PM
Thanks. Yeah I've been moving things around a lot in the edit. Some parts of that definitely too quick. Fades might work. At the moment I'm moving away from having it be as "trailery" and making it more of a partial short story. We'll see how it works.

08-31-2009, 06:19 AM (

Here's part of my edit with what I have for the shots so far. most of the dialogue is stand in. Still tweaking stuff but any comments or suggestions welcome.

you choosed i one of most difficult areas for explosion composition :) all that trees ect .. how did you do that? - did you make it from couple trees layers or only by playing with thresholds for masks ect?

08-31-2009, 06:30 PM
I know damn, that's crazy! FX are looking pretty good too! You got Luma guys helping you or are you solo? Chad helped explain linear workflow in MR to me over the phone. You project is coming together... next time we'll have to just join forces!

08-31-2009, 08:20 PM
Looking good! I like the distortion stuff at the end.

For the actual dialogue - feels like some garbled radio chatter could be cool... I'm thinking half-life 2 type stuff

08-31-2009, 08:44 PM
Staszek. Thanks. For the explosions It's a combo of various live action elements and fluidfx. I used roto's and and hand painted depth passes for the live action stuff, and painted masks and paint effects holdout for the cg. There is still a bunch of roto I could do but that will have to be a last second thing if at all. As there are much more important shots that are nowhere yet.

destruct007. Solo for this one. This is my first time doing one of these and wasn't sure if I wanted to get a bunch of people involved in something if I wasn't that certain about. Yeah I definitely would like to do a team project next time.

mikebot. Thanks, Yeah radio noise/chatter would definitely help. It's something I want to do but am not too sure of the best way to do it. I need to find some radio noise sound fx and what not I guess. But yeah definitely going to try for that in final.

08-31-2009, 09:19 PM
Hey, This looks pretty cool. Forest is a difficult place for an explosion.
Explosion will not only be smoke and fire, but it would rip a massive hole in the ground.
If you add more debrie and ground flying around it should look more realistic.

09-01-2009, 03:27 AM
pierzak. Thanks for your comments. True, that is something I would like to add but I don't know if I'll have time, if I get back to this shot I'll try adding some dirt/grass that gets kicked up by first major explosion.

09-02-2009, 03:37 AM
Looks nice!

I think you could bloom the light out on the explosions at the end some more though. It would help to integrate them into the scene. Ideally you'd want some influence on the lighting of the trees around the explosions, but I realize that probably wasn't feasible to simulate on set and it would be a nightmare to try and do it properly in post with all of those leaves to deal with.

09-02-2009, 09:54 PM
ivanisavich. Thanks. yeah there is a fine line between integration and cheesy light wrapping with these kind things. But I agree that it could be pushed a little more. As for the interactive lighting, absolutely correct. One of those things I'd love to add but probably won't have time for, figured I'd do without it since it's bright out and all.
How's New Zealand and MAKE? Been awhile since we were both in Minneapolis.

09-03-2009, 03:01 AM
Ah they're pretty good man...only a few months left till I graduate, and MAKE's got some cool projects coming out soon :D

09-10-2009, 07:47 AM
Wow, crazy times. Finished the trailer, have the making of pretty much in place. Now I just need to lock the edit and see if I can't get a few finishing touches on some shots.
I faintly remember what sleep is.

What time zone is the deadline for?

09-10-2009, 08:47 AM
I think it might be uk time because as far as I can tell the website operates in that time. Not sure though.

09-10-2009, 08:56 AM
Yay! 3 more days. That is really going to be helpful. That means I can sleep tonight!

Hay. I like that you changed timing. Faster and shorter shots are much better than long and slow. One thing about the last shot. That plane looks as if it was going 30 km/h ... very slow. I could imageine it flying throught those clouds crazy fast.
Well done.

09-11-2009, 12:36 PM
It's nice to watch how much progress have you made with this shots since the begining of this challenge. And I'm curious how it's all gonna look finished. Editing is much much better now.

09-11-2009, 12:37 PM
I actually think the speed for the clouded shot is pretty good, maybe a little faster couldn't hurt. The shot that really needs the plane speed higher is when it flies over the trees, it is going far to slow for how close it looks.

Hope that helps, good luck.

09-11-2009, 10:29 PM
pierzak. Yeah I had that in mind when working on that last shot, however I liked the feel of it. The reason it appears to be moving slow is that it is flying with the clouds, which are moving pretty fast. (That's my story and i'm sticking to it.) In reality I think the plane would be smaller in comparison to the clouds as well, but I like it this way better.

09-11-2009, 10:39 PM
Nice!! the trailer has a good pace to it, and I like the audio.

2 thoughts:
- Have you tried speeding up the explosion clip? Or doing that thing where the run is really fast, then slow explosion? I dunno, it feels like it needs to be punchier, since everything builds to it.

- last shot (the bomber in clouds) is begging for some sort of visual distortion effect... similar to the one you had on your post awhile ago, on the very last shot, where the 2 guys were walking towards the camera in the dark.

09-11-2009, 11:03 PM
mikebot. Good notes on both points. I'm focused on full edit right now but those are both things that could be done rather quickly so will probably be able to do those too.
Thanks for the suggestions.

09-12-2009, 06:33 PM
Bryan. Thanks for your input. I don't know, speed seems pretty reasonable to me. Looking at footage of flyovers it seems to match up pretty well. It wouldn't be flying at full speed that low while dropping it's cargo.

09-12-2009, 09:50 PM
Ya, you're right. I watched it again and calculated the speed out to about 200mph, lower end of spectrum for new bombers in carpet runs but still well within norm. Love to see making of.

Software: Maya,mental ray,Photoshop

Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Maya, Nuke.

Well here it is. Was a fun, tough learning experience.

Editing was my biggest challenge on this one due to a rushed preproduction so I could shoot on vacation. And an inablity to do reshoots after it was over.

I think if I was going to do this over I would have stuck to a less linear "trailer" format or done just one setpiece. And obviously spent more time in preproduction.

But here it is hope you enjoy.

Great job! Nice work finishing! Had a really cool feel, documentary almost mixed with feature style, maybe D9 style if that's a style. Great job! Clean work!

09-14-2009, 06:46 PM
Dave and Tom,
Thanks, glad you liked it. That was definitely the feel I was going for so that's good to hear.

09-14-2009, 10:33 PM
Hey pretty sweet man. The explosions in the forest were awesome. Makes me wannna see more, so in that sense, job well done. Congrats

10-10-2009, 11:42 PM
I was expecting a bit more, but there you are :) Some really perfect shots there. Congrats!

10-14-2009, 06:10 PM
Thanks, It was a good experience. I was just happy to have finished on time.
